I have been considering a web site to promote my business, But do they really work? A few years back i had one with limited success.
Do they bring in a lot of work or they just a nice gimmick?
How do you go about acheiving good placings on the search engines? Ihave heard that this can be expensive.
How much shold i be looking at paying for reasonable site?
I would be interseted in your experiances and opinions
Thank you
John

If you are looking for a service where do you look? A lot of people will do a Google search.

i think you have hit a nerve, here? no reply's on a hot topic like this, strange that.
any way i have limited responce, as its free thats not a problem. you have to study hard and you will get results in the end.
the advantage is that you can use this cheap space and it can be free if you like. to what is called expand your message. say you take a advert in the local paper or yellow pages as these medias are expensive you can put a reason for them to hit your site with some kind of offer. like find out how you can get free carpet cleaning at www.mysite.com
then you have loads of free space to put your message over.
the advantage is that with the saved money you can then cover a bigger area and this will increase you responce.
hit the books and goog luck

My website works for me.A lot depends on location too if you are in an area where there are already a lot of cc's it will be difficult to get to the top of the rankings or will cost you quite a bit of money to do it.
On google I'm currently no 1 for carpet cleaning newcastle and there are a lot of directories that are currently behind me and unless you get the meta tags & content correct they will be ahead of you.Mark Roberts did my 1st site which was very successful but I felt it needed changing but alot of the content is still the same.Doug Holloway also has good listings so it may pay you to contact one of these guys.

i had a website once from locallife.co.uk and found it a complete and expensive waste of time!Their sales people were incredibly pushy too.
Better to just have a yell.com priority ad imho.
-
just boked a job through my site, i find people tend to check you out first and a site with good info works a treat
well worth it!
-
hi folks my web site appears 2 times on page 1 of google [but so far about 10 weeks] only 2 jobs
-
Its all about content folks,
what makes your site different from the others to get them to contact you over the others?
-
Guys
A website is an advert and nothing more so it's only going to be considered by those who look at it. If no-one looks at it its irrelevant how good it is. What matters first is how much traffic it gets and then if the viewer likes the content they will call you. Websites do work as a large proportion of todays population feel confident in a company who has one.
-
bennymon has his web site on the google first page in two positions, its being visited but still only 2 leads in 10 weeks.
It must be the content that is not producing the desired effect and I would be looking at that urgently.
You can have bundles of traffic but if you don't grab them instantly,,,,Click and your gone.

I agree with Ian that a website is a great way to tell people the things you cannot afford to tell them in your local press advert or yelloe page ad, my site generates 2-3 jobs a month but i know this is becuase its crap, ive got a web developer looking at it now so hope fully soon ill be able to at least double the figure, the way i see it is like this if it costs you £60- or £70 a year for the domain plus hosting its worth every penny if you just use it as a brochure by putting the link on all your ads, the occasional job from google is a bonus.

most of my work comes through my site, I`m having a night mare on google at the mo but i`m no1 on most of the other search engines for most of my search terms ::)

Hi Guys
If you are serious about building a CC business then a website is essential.
In future everyone will use electronic directories .
I already receive 20 % of my business from my websites and this grows all the time.
Another major advantage is the sales potential if and when you want to retire, do something different etc
There are still plenty of website opportunities so go for it :o
Cheers
Doug

Just for a laugh more than anything else I put my web site with a "company" for a months trial to see how it would get on under normal circumstances.
It failed miserably. I didnt get one phone call from it and all the e-mails were sales people offering me all sorts of services.
However, I wasnt too disappointed in fact not at all disappointed.
My theory was that "normal " people wouldnt be interested not only in the site itself but certainly not interested in phoning for any type of service.
The fact I had no calls I am hoping my theory was right and that I scared the potential clients away.
If my theory was wrong then I would say web sites dont work, but again my site isnt the best to do a market research.
For the people who have seen my site through my direction to do so I have been very pleased with the results. I picked up two new designers in this country and one more in California. I got two jobs in Europe, one in Austria and the other in Italy. If I do well in these there are other jobs in Spain, France and Holland.
I suppose in closing some web sites work well and some dont. Mine is usless to create work off its own back. Other people cant do with out them, best, Dave.

??? ???
Is anybody else as confused as me ?

You are not on this planet. You live in a semi-detached house on a modest housing estate.
Yet you have A list celebrities as clients that you claim to have all around the world. How do you get your truckmount to jobs? Do you have a modified 747 to fly you around.
You are on a serious windup?
-
That sounds like fighting talk.
-
Might send Sylvester Stallone round to sort me out.
-
hi folks i thought i had a great site tell me what you think www.carpetcleaningguildford.com cheers :)
-
Yo Adrian! ;D
Damian.
-
Woodman, apologies it wasnt meant to confuse. I just re-read it and it appears fine to me but then we all understand ourselves.
Prodry, what is difficult to work out? I drive across this country and into Europe and have truckmounts and portables in the states.
Oh and you have no idea of what properties I have and or where I live at what time or in what country.
Anyway, what bearing does it have where I live to whom I clean for.
Best, Dave.
Again, some sites work for some and some sites dont for others.

when using google adwords the variables that people can type run into the hundreds.
You expect them to type 'carpet cleaning guilford' and if you set this as the exact phrase to use, you are only getting hits from one of many hundreds of keywords or keyword variations.
Not sure if this is the problem you are having but worth working on your keywords, some people will use 'carpet cleaner GU1' or 'surry carpet cleaner' or even stupid phrases like 'good carpet cleaner guildford' or many, many other variables or combinations.
Your site looks good, 2 jobs in 10 weeks does sound poor. I have many adword accounts and even the one I have in Ipswich, Suffolk gets me at least 3 calls a week. If the carrot munchers are using Google then you would expect Surrey custys to do so more.
Keep at it.....

Dont want to get in an argument with you, I thought you would put your hands up and admit you were having a bit of a laugh with your client list and your whacky claims.
Maybe you believe it, then i feel sorry for you.
-
prodry, not looking for an argument as I am not trying to make you look stupid as you are wrong. You must have too much time on your hands if you are nosey enough to want to know what I do in my life.
If you must know about 1?? Brock??? I have never owned it outright nor have I ever bought it. Wherever you got your info from it is wrong.
For what it is worth it was my dads house as my mum had died in 2002 and he later died in the May of 2004.
So you are so far wrong in your accusations as it then became my house along with my sister. So it was mine to sell or do what ever I pleased with it, not that it is any of your d**n business but there you go. In Nov of 2004 I was still living in the states so wasnt going to buy the house that had just become mine through my dad passing away.
No need to feel sorry for me but thankyou for the concern.
Best, Dave.
I must also ask, why is it you question who I work for? Perhaps because you dont work for similar. Someone has to clean their properties, as and I guess it certainly isnt you then it has to be someone else.
Lastly, may I also ask, what whacky claims are you refering too? There is nothing whacky about what I do, maybe the way I do things granted but is it whacky to clean for people you dont. I could say it is whacky what you do but as I dont know what you do or why you do it how can I make and educated comment such as you have? Oh yeah yours wasnt so educated was it?

I am not jumping in-between anything here chaps but i dont like this public announcement of properties AND addresses etc! I hope a mod withdraws certain posts as i have a family living in a house i own, however i am NOT there to protect THEM!! Things look good on post, HOWEVER getting personal is-on a forum, a little too much! Cool it guys-please, its a bit much really!!?
Damian.
-
Damian, good point and certainly taken. I have adjusted my posting although and however it wasnt my post putting out an address.
How did you get on with what you were doing last time we spoke.
Best, Dave.
-
Dave, hi mate, i hope youre well?
I know it wasnt you who initiated putting out addresses etc and im glad that both posts have been altered. A bit of rib tickling is good but personal stuff is out of line. There are some loonies on web.
The project i was talking to you about is nearly complete but i'm stuck fast as to what to put it into-van or trailer? and other business commitments (as well as court dates for access to kids!) are holding me back a bit. At present with business i'm having to cover three counties so i never seem to stop! Cheers mate.
Damian.
P.s I know three counties is'nt a lot to you as you are always shooting off into EU but in my line of work its blooming tiring mate ;D
P.p.s Thanks again Dave for the advice. Nice one. ;)
