Neil,

This is a question asked and answered several times, but worthy of a further airing.

Latex adhesive swells when damp. Polypropylene does not. The differential  causes rippling which will normally disappear when the backing completely dries. The exceptions are when the carpet is prevented from settling back due to being anchored by heavy furniture and when the polypropylene of the weave had been stretched or heat-damaged.

There are other causes of rippling in other carpet types.

John.
