hello trevor
i have always found your advice and attitude to our occupation very professional and myself having grown from a one man band to having 3 staff working on a self employed basis i would like your advice on where to go from here please....
i have a lot of work but find that i simply cannot afford to employ my subbies on a permanent basis ie ni contributions and tax just confuses me. i would like to go 'legit' but it just doesnt seem worth it and would like to know your opinion on which way i should venture next
we do earn a lot of money between us but if i took them on the cards i dont have enough cash flow to pay them weekly and holiday pay and sickness is out of the question. sorry if this is a bit rough but just wondered your advice on how to go about being more'legal' as it were

Trying to pass employees of as sub contractors is very common and very
illegal. And will result in big fines as soon as the tax office catches you.
-
Thanks for that trev.
Just a question to anyone that knows is it true whem employing you pay some tax for the worker eg if they pay £20.00 tax then you also pay around £24.00 tax so i heard?? is that right. Or have i got it wrong and its (NI)

I would suggest that if you are looking at employing staff, then you get professional advice, go to somewhere like Business Link or Entrust, they run free courses on employing staff. They will take you through P45's, P46's, P35's, etc, etc also employee and employer entitlements.
The last thing you want to be doing wrong is upsetting the Inland revenue.
Also go down to PC World and pick up a copy of one of the Payroll and accountancy software packages they have. They all provide a free advice line for the first year and you get updates every April so you are kept up to date with changes to allowances and calculations. They cost about £100 - £150 and much easier than trying to do it with pen and paper.
We use Quickbooks and it literally takes a few minutes each week to do the payroll.
Remember when you employ staff, you need to take into account your Employer NI contributions (around 8%, but will vary depending on personal allowances), holiday pay allowance (again around 8%), sick pay allowance (3% ish)
So if you are going to pay someone £10.00 /hour, then it will actually cost you around £11.90 / hour throughout the year.
I say again seek professional advice!

Hi Dave,
Sorry, didn't see your question until now.
Phone up the tax office and ask them to send you out an employers pack, but remember and tell them that you don't want to register as an employer at the moment.
There's a cd, all the relevant forms and booklets that'll give you an idea what's involved.
They also run free courses on payroll.
Also i'd agree with what Lionhearts stated in the post above.
