Title: Would this work on carbon poles
Post by: wightsurf on April 10, 2007, 05:12:56 pm
when reading about carbon poles it seems that they are a bit prone to cracking at the joints.Would it be worth whipping them at this point for two reasons.
As a fisherman i find this helps to grip the pole/rod at the joint and second this would give extra strenth at the joint. Its easy to whip a rod/pole just go to any fishing shop and buy the colour thread and glue that you would like . Have a go on a broom handle first then away you go,i'm sure this would save a lot of problems.Would this do for a repair job????? ::)

The base of the poles can also chip as you put them down, what they need is an outside collar incorporated maybe under the whipping to create a shock absorber but it musnt collapse inwards or this will prevent the next section fitting in. I use about 10 winds of pvc tape slightly conically wound to project no more than 1/8th past the tube end, in practice it curls round and just past the edge of the tube and creates the cushion. It will wear away but its easy to wrap another couple of turns. I have also started using an external 2" glass fibre collar made from tapering bits of the right size from glass fibre tubes, cut to the right size and slid over and slightly past the joint. Its really tough.

Why not try heat shrink tubing also from a tackle shop just slide over the bottom of the pole heat with a hair dryer and it shrinks put a few layers over each other.
If the top of your pole gets scratch up put some there as well but i found on the telescopic you can't slid over the tube .
Infact could you use the heat shrink instead of the whiping?
