Title: Bait & Switch
Post by: David_Annable on April 04, 2007, 05:12:49 pm
Hi

Does Bait & Switch actually happen in the UK ?

I know it goes on in the USA, but i have personally never come across it in the country.

Hi,

I did have one client who told me that her mother in law had a CC come in on £28 and leave with over £300.  Apparently there were several "complications" with the job that he had to charge more for.

I guess it does go on, but is not as common as the fear pitchers would make you believe.

It might not be called bait and switch in this country but I can assure you that it does go on. In town area's not so much in the leafy suburbs (people with thier heads screwed on).

Chavs advertising to potential chavs ;D

Hi

In my 15 years experience bait & switch has never been mentioned by a customer.

I find that the CC that advertise low prices actually charge low prices and work to a reasonable standard.

I don't think that we are 'clued up' as much as the Yanks they are born to sell, if we advertise a cheap price we tend to go and do the job or sell the product at that, stupid really but we are sold/told by Media or day to day advertising that cheap or cheaper is wonderful everywhere you go cheap is your friend and offers you more for your money.

Value for money is better than cheap, you can get what you want without cutting corners or missing off what you really want, but it is a bit harder to sell against the flow of cheap, cheaper, cheapest, 50% off etc.

Hi David

Don't confuse low ticket priced cleaners with bait & switch the two are very different.

i have no doubt there are very low priced cleaners out there that actually only want to charge low prices in the hope of volume on the other hand other cleaners operate the low price (bait) with the sole intention of upping the price once in (switch) .

I have countless examples of bait & switch merchants and one company that Trading Standards sued that operated soley on bait & switch,

Its very much alive and kicking in this country and has been for a very long time.
