Title: Jump start battery
Post by: Pat Purcell on April 01, 2007, 05:20:21 pm
I saw a post a while back where somebody said they were using a jump starter with a 12v outlet to run their trolley pump but I cant find it
Would any of you battery experts know if the charger at the link would be suitable or would it be a waste of time

Hi Pat

I just checked the spec on your link and it only has a 9amp battery, if your pump is drawing 7-9 amps you will be constantly running it close to its limits, they are built for a large surge in power, ie cranking and not a constant continuise drain.
I think a couple of the guy's use them, but the ones they have, I think are around 17amph with a 20 hour drain,  they don't seem to have any problems. I know Jouk45 uses one and he has not reported any problems.

My only suggestion is for that price they are in the States, I would buy one, give it a try, and if it wasn't suitable I would just keep it for my car.
Sorry if this doesn't help.

regards

Jeff

Thats a massive help Jeff, so if I could find one that puts out 17amh with at least a 15-20 hr drain time it would be ok
Thanks Pat

Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
The versatile Schumacher PS-400-3A has a maintenance free, 18 ampere hour battery that delivers 850 peak amps and 250 crank assist amps. It provides extra power that 12 amp units just can't provide, making it perfect for truck and heavy duty applications. With the PS-400-3A you can make sure you're never stranded with a dead battery again. Forget about flagging down a stranger for help or fumbling with unruly jumper cables, the PS-400-3A is a rugged jumpstarter that will charge your battery and get you back on the road. And if you can't stay away from your work while you're out of the office, you can even count on the Schumacher to provide standard 12-volt power -- plug in your laptop or other devices just like you would at home.
Safety and Convenience Features
The PS-400-3A is loaded with safety and convenience features, including a reverse hookup protection to safeguard the car battery, computer, and Instant Power from damage in case the cables are connected to the wrong terminals. An audible alarm warning sounds when clamps are reversed or touched together.

The PS-400-3A gives you portable power to jumpstart nearly any battery.
The jump starter on/off switch shuts off the internal battery at the clamps for added safety, eliminating accidental shorting of the clamps. A 12-volt power outlet allows you to operate any number of 12-volt devices. Its extra wide base provides maximum stability and safety.

Easy to Use
To revive a dead battery, simply connect the PS-400-3As two cables to the battery terminals of the stranded car and turn the key. After providing a jump (or every few months, if stored), the unit should be recharged by plugging it into a wall outlet with the included cord. The sealed lead-acid battery provides enough power to operate a cellular phone for 30-plus hours, a depth finder for 21 hours, or a camcorder for 12 hours.

Features
The display is comprised of easy-to-read battery status LEDs, which tells you when internal battery is at full power, 75 percent charged, or at 50 percent or less. A simple push of the button instantly turns on the display. The heavy duty, copper jaw, 300 amp, metal clamps are designed for solid connections to top and side post batteries. The #4 gauge, 28-inch cable stays flexible in the coldest temperatures. The LED indicator lets you know whether the unit is in charging or charged mode to help easily monitor the status of the internal battery.

Durable and Easy to Store
The PS-400-3A is rust and corrosion proof, featuring a one-piece construction and a polypropylene case which resists fuels and solvents. Storage mounts on the back of unit keep the clamps in place for safety when not in use.

Warranty
Every Schumacher power source comes with a one-year limited warranty (90 days on battery).

Pat after reading the Product Description, I personally would only use any of the Jump starters for emergency purposes only, they seem to run light duty appliances over a period of time, were talking of 7-8 amps for our pumps so at the most,  you would only get a few short hours use from them before going flat.

I checked with Jouk45 and the pumps for his wfp system is a home made one from twin BMW car windscreen washers so the current drawn from them is much smaller than the pumps we use.

I think Matt on the DIY forum also uses them for one of his systems and I'm sure we have more members who use them.

I use a 100amph battery, but I always carry a spare just incase, and the spare I carry is one I got for £5 from a Disability shop, they often sell second hand one's, this would get me out of a hole if I was half way through a clean and my main battery failed.
These batteries are  18amp ones with 20 hour drain and they are built for constant drain as you would with a disability scooter or wheel chair, for £5 each you could throw them away.

true if you are using the jump leads, but their is a port at the side that allows you to use normal 12v products,if you look to the right side you will see my switch is there
