But then it would be, as they have sponsored it.

I got 2 in the post today as well. Sponsored by Ionic and boy cant you tell, still you cant blame them for that seeing as they have paid for it!
-
If you went on a BWCA course you will get one, that's how I got mine.
-
Never had one before but I got one today, don't know what a BWCA couse is.
-
I too received one today and ive only been going for 6 months, and I dont know how cos ive only just moved here and my thomson local and yellow pages listing still show my old address. Not that I care I got a free mag ;D ;D ;D
On page 18 in the Master & Servant picture the poles are on a rack does anybody know where I can buy them from, please dont say there patented by Ionics and they cost 2 grand each ;)

I got too! A supplier must have sold our addresses. Even though it was ionics-the magazine, I found it interesting and started to toy eith the idea of an ionics system.....Help!
-
:oo dear its perfect timing for the show, where have they got all those addresses all of a sudden every one gets a copy, not so long ago you had to pay :-\ which I personally thought against it and did not bother in the end, theres only so much you can say,but loads you can see ::) :o
they have a very good system and looks great it must be said
there in yar face and up yar jumper has got us talking about them ::)
they have hitmertised us on the bloody net ::) :o how Ironicly is that
even the puns got in,
I am off before I dump me squeegee ;D ::)
-
If a supplier has sold our addresses to PWC it has to be Gardiners cos there the only supplier that has delivered anything to my new address :o
-
Alistair - I can assure you that Gardiners have never and will never sell any of our clients details to any third party.
We too have received 4 copies of this magazine this morning, all of which were unrequested.
-
BWCA also sponsored by ionics so no wonder you all get a copy why dont they just send us all a flyer instead of a glossy mag!
-
Alistair - I can assure you that Gardiners have never and will never sell any of our clients details to any third party.
We too have received 4 copies of this magazine this morning, all of which were unrequested.
Sorry Alex, I wasn't accussing you - somebody said a supplier could have sold our info, and I said IF it was a supplier you are the only one with my new address.
I dont really care I got a free mag which will make for good toilet reading for the next few days ;D
Regards
Alistair
-
Alex,
Considering you have 4 copies do you know where I can purchase the pole holders pictured on page 18
Alistair
-
Probably everyone will get one.
IONICS are using the Mag. to get everyone
to run to their Stand at the NEC.
Its just a sales catalogue.
-
OIIII I have an Ironics system and I didnt get one :( :'(
Gotta hand it to Mr Ironics.. he's a smart mover :P
-
Hey, if it's free; then who cares?
I'm not sure if I'm still paying for it or not though. I don't think I am.
If I am, I'd be a bit cross, since it's full of Ionics advertising; how to pay for Ionics products and stuff.
The thing is, the 'features' are actually 'feature advertising', but unlike newspapers which clearly state 'advert', this magazine doesn't, which is fine if it's free; but I don't want to part with my 'ard-earned to be given a sales pitch.
-
Hi Alistair,
I'm sure B&Q do something similar. Or if that fails maybe Ionics could source one for you.
-
Alex
Since you got 4 can you post me one
Dave
-
The people who post here seem okay even if they are pushy.
I was interested in Alex's supalite videos(of poles in use) but he never gave any indication even in broad terms of price.
-
Yes, I got my copy today.
Let's face it, and Philip Hanson will probably argue against this, but the PWC Mag has always been hand in hand with Ionics.
I personally would like to congratulate Mr Ionics ( Craig Molem, I think?) on 10 years of a very successfully company.
I met Mr Molem 2 or 3 years ago at the Fed show in Hinckley Leicester. I was totaly lost and agog at all these Water Fed Pole systems and had only a tenner in my pocket :( :( :(
"You don't want to spend all that money on one of these do you?" he approached me. "What about leasing one for around 40 quid a week?"
He got my attention!!!
I subsequently very nearly did lease a small van system and even now would not knock anyone who has.
But, for me, Ionics systems are far too expensive for my business and would not be justified cost.

Hi Curious
All the prices are found on the website.
http://www.gardinerpolesystems.co.uk/acatalog/shop.html. Look under Water Fed Poles and Brushes, then Water Fed Poles and the fourth section down is Super-Lite Poles. Within this section you will find the prices for complete Super-Lite Assemblies (ie SL-35).
Hi Dave
I'll leave a copy in the porch for you ;)
-
Let's face it, and Philip Hanson will probably argue against this, but the PWC Mag has always been hand in hand with Ionics.
i think it was said that Philip couldnt produce issue 2 or 3 ( cannot remmber which ) as he had money issues with the mag, then craig stepped in and finainced the whole thing, im sure that craig is the owner of the mag and philip just the editor
** i am sure some1 will correct me if i am wrong, and feel free to do so, as its only what i have heard on this very forum **
-
Mine came this morning, i was working on the campervan while my little un was in pre-school
i quickly opened it, interested in a quick glance
not intill this thread did i realise it was the PWC mag, i thought it was one of them ionics brochures
ive just checked mine again, not many adverts from any1 other than ionics, very little
the features are just stacked with ionics-ness
subliminal messages are all the rage i hear
now i must go out and buy a cadburys cream egg ( i can here corrie on in the other room ) whats happening to me
-
got mine this morning too (no sub), i think i remember that when i ordered my NEC tickets, there was something on there about the magazine!!
-
Typical, we throw all that mud; then someone comes up with a rational explanation.
-
I got one tody at my parents address...my dad is called Steve as well...!!!!
It is surely no different than sending information to our customers about the other services we provide...it`s business development :)
-
I got a copy this morning as well and I haven't ordered any NEC tickets or ever bought or enquired about anything from Ionics. That has to mean that somebody has either provided my details to PWC mag or they, PWC mag, harvested them from somewhere.
DJ
-
Im the same ive never ordered NEC tickets
-
well i have a spare if some one wants it just let me know where to send it im sure it wont be around for long ha ha
-
Well I never got one (or even 2 or 3 copies) but why doesn't that surprsie me? :-X
-
On page 18 in the Master & Servant picture the poles are on a rack does anybody know where I can buy them from, please dont say there patented by Ionics and they cost 2 grand each ;)
Alistair
Telephone Ionics and ask to buy one of their Stainless steel W/F Pole racks as seen in the free Ionics sponsored copy of PWC.
-
i just got mine this morning
does this mean i am part of the in crowd now
i dont like being in the in crowd ;)
-
The people who post here seem okay even if they are pushy.
I was interested in Alex's supalite videos(of poles in use) but he never gave any indication even in broad terms of price.
Curious,
Don't blame Alex for not posting prices on the forum...it's not considered good form!
Us blebs can chat and compare prices, but the suppliers have to hold their horses, this site is after all provided for us by Express Cleaning Supplies, so Mike isn't going to want rival suppliers posting their prices on his site!!
You have to check out the suppliers websites for prices ;)
Ian
-
You are always picking on me Ian. Last time because i was sticking up for the third world getting de salinated water. By pushy I meant the brand leaders Ionics, whereas( imo) others are too reticent at times.
The site sponsors don't say a lot now you come to mention it, but when they do it's very patrition( as opposed to plebian). I thank them for providing a fun and informative site. Part of that is people like me making stupid and ill informed comments.
Would it be possible for the magazine to post a link or address where we could be added their list?
If they read this I prefer email newsletter anyway.
-
Hi Everyone
Well I have to say, I am very disappointed. Granted the mag this time around is sponsored by Ionics. But there are no other advertisers in it and the 90% of the actual mag is all Ionics adverts.
Factual information (unless it has recently changed) Craig owns and or is a director off Ionics / BWCA / PWC Magazine / ClearChoice / Pure2o.
From the outset the magazine has always advertised all of the above and for a magazine that is supposes to be independent, it certainly does not look that way.
With reference to how everyone has received a magazine, this will be down to, if someone has made an inquiry and or purchased anything from the above mentioned businesses in the past, then you would have received it that way and or, they have purchased mailing lists, which is very common in business.
I do take my hat of to him, because his marketing techniques are excellent, however, for the PWC Mag to be seen independent from Ionics (and not an advertising brochure like this issue) and the other businesses, more advertising needs to be accepted from other manufacturers. Will this ever happen though?
Personally I would have preferred to have the magazine full of stories, tips, other advertisers etc and for Ionics to have enclosed a new brochure with it. This would then have given the magazine some more independency.
Many Thanks
Andrew
Ps. I have a set of those pole holders and with VAT and Delivery, it is over £100
-
too true ;D
-
Well you must be in their good books 24/7 because I still haven't received one, and I had a subscription with this mag ;D
To Stuart. Did you ask to advertise in there?
-
Hello! And thank you for all of your comments on the latest issue of PWC, which I'm glad has now been delivered.
This issue of the magazine is a sponsored issue, as you have seen, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the reach & wash system. As such, (not surprisingly) you'll see a lot of information about reach & wash products. This type of sponsorship, though you may not have seen it before, is actually very common in the publishing business for all kinds of magazines. More about the sponsorship in a moment.
But, this is not the only information in this issue, with articles about cladding cleaning, using traditional window cleaning tools, the general status of the window cleaner, the benefits of running a window cleaning business and so on.
Following feedback from the last issue, I decided to keep some elements of the new style (like improved page layouts), and drop others like the non-window cleaning content. I'm glad to say that this seems to have been the right thing, and I've already had lots of emails from readers who are pleased to see PWC back to a its 100% window cleaning content.
Regarding the sponsorship; producing a magazine is an expensive process by any standard. (Annoyingly, this has gotten even more expensive lately due to the Royal Mail's new pricing structure - but I wont bore you with my rantings about that!)
It would be nice to think that there was enough advertising revenue floating around from all of the different supliers to offset the cost, but I'm afraid that's just not the case, and in many ways illustrates the unusual economics of the window cleaning supply industry.
From the start, I have given all suppliers (except one) the opportunity to advertise in the magazine. Some have taken it up, but most have not, and if you want to know why there aren't more advertisers in PWC, you'd really need to ask them that question, but I'm happy to tell you that its not for the lack of me asking. As long as its window cleaning related, I'll be happy to have an advert.
I have even given the opportunity for suppliers to sponsor an issue of the magazine, exactly as this issue is sponsored. Again, none has taken up that offer so far, but I am still open to the idea.
I'm always glad to hear honest feedback from window cleaners, both positive and negative. I ask for it all the time, and its very useful to me. I have also noticed that generally speaking you only get feedback when someone isnt happy about something, and thats just human nature.
What I do find a little amusing, however, is criticism from people who are connected with organisations which themselves are sponsored by companies in competition with PWC and its sponsors. I notice there's no shortage of that in this thread, and that's not alltogether unexpected. It is a bit rich when they then whinge about independence though! Still, its good to get feedback from all quarters.
I would very much welcome the opportunity to meet some forum members in person, and discuss the magazine (or any window cleaning topic for that matter!). Please do come and say hello to me on the PWC stand at The Cleaning Show. I'll be exhibiting on stand G14, near the seminar area.
Its my opinion that events like The Cleaning Show, Windex etc should be supported by us. I often hear complaints from window cleaners that there is not enough going on for window cleaners, and when I mention the various events I usually get a blank stare. If we don't support these events, both by attending and by exhibiting (if an organisation), eventually they will disappear.
Not to mention the fact that they're great events, and its a good way to network!
I look forward to meeting you face-to-face (rather than as a dismembodied name on a screen!). Last year at Windex I met many forum members and I expect the same will be true next week, and it really is good to put faces to names!

Hi Phil
Omnipole's 10th Anniversary is at the end of the year
can I look forward to a whole issue dedicated to our products and acheivments
;D
-
Hi Phil,
I'm an ideas man. Should you ever need any.
-
There you go then omnipole. How much would it cost to do an email newsletter about your ten years. You are well regarded and your products are proven to work, many people would send an email address for this. You could even do a bit of a feature of a couple of people on this site who use your products to clean windows and make money.
-
good reply Philip
at least you didnt come on here and claim the mag was unbiased, of course you couldnt do that, as even my 4 yr daughter would be able to spot the ionics logo on every article
the whole thing about "sponsering the the mag" though, from what most understand, the mag is owned by ionics ( or 1 of the other names they go under ) ?? ? ?? is this correct ?? ? ??
-
I think Phil is being very honest here , the only company that have sponsered him is Ionics and no other company has so hence the adverts for Ionics.
So this is one time I will say thumbs up to them for getting this going by using their own money. Lets hope other companys follow suit as something like this is needed in our Industry.
Well done Phil as having spent time in the publication industry this is a fantastic acheivement, will see you at the Cleaning Show.

Thanks for the response Philip. As ever, a comprehensive reply that adresses the issues.
I did like the magazine more this time. Of course it is a pity that economics don't permit more independence but such is life. If the magazine continues, I would probably renew my sub.
-
;D Glyn you got more chance of flying up in the air by flapping your arms ;D
c u at the show m8 ;D
-
I haven't seen any of the issues of PWCM but with an industry of about 200,000 practtioners at a point in it's history where say 20% have gone WFP and another 40% about to come over in the next five years with systems costing between two and ten thousand pounds it should be a fairly sound business proposition. It should never have foundered.
Genuine controversy and interest sell.(I don't mean bickering, infighting, or tired arguments). If you allowed other points of view, contrary even like matt, and made use of some of the personalities, you would have a winner. Even your backer is smart enough to know this.

Didn't Philip say:

So you can!
-
The question was rhetorical.
However a story rather than paid sponsorship or advertising would show an unbiased publication reporting trade news.
-
If they did it right it would be a must read. Matt, Omnipole, whoever on the front page, if it made you pick it up and read it , it would be a success in it's own right.
From these posts some are already alienated.
-
The question was rhetorical.
Sorry, Glyn; I'm a Geordie and don't understand concepts such as 'rhetoric'; I thought you were being just being sarcastic.
I'm sure Philip would prefer his magazine to be unbiased, but when he says:
Regarding the sponsorship; producing a magazine is an expensive process by any standard. (Annoyingly, this has gotten even more expensive lately due to the Royal Mail's new pricing structure - but I wont bore you with my rantings about that!)
I think this gives us a clue why it's the way it is; at the moment.
However, I really don't want to be purchasing an advertising mag; I'd have it for free; but I'm not happy about purchasing something that's just trying to flog me stuff.
I'm sure I'm due to renew my subscription, and I will, and hopefully Philip will get more support from suppliers advertising in his magazine; other than Ionics.
-
Was it you Tosh or shiner who posted about the old boy dropping you by letter with his cheque? he had accussed you of breaking his washing line and other stuff in the past, and it was under priced anyway.
But he had been a friend also, and you had liked him. I thought what a good column that would make. If it had that kind of suff as well as commerical it would succeed.
-

you wuld think so, BUT are the others being priced out of the mag, afterall ionics dont really pay for the adverts, so if the mag prices others out, they have a great stance with a mag and adverts, a window cleaning mag, full of ionics products
-
Matt, I'm a window cleaner and have no great aspirations in life other than getting the bills paid; not getting cancer; and living a stress-free(ish) existance till I die.
But a window cleaning magazine hitting my doormat every-now-and-then would be nice.
I really don't care about the politics between suppliers; and just hope Philip sorts it out.
-

That was me who posted re washing line and being dropped. I had also been accused (fairly nicely) of causing other damage too at various times.
Now don't get me wrong. I have caused more damage since going to WFP (mainly broken plant pots) but not to this particular persons property.
The actual reason given for the "dropping" was that writing and sending cheques had become too much inconvenience to him. He (accidentally) made his point well in that he hadn't filled in the amount in words so I completed it for him when I received the cheque.
Nice old fella but I only kept going out of a sense of loyalty. As a business proposition, it was a dead duck for me.

tosh, i was just playing devils advocate in this instance
we all know that ionics would love to be "the voice" of the trade ( after 1 of them tried to run the APWC ?? ?? ?? and didnt get his way so it seemed he kept the name etc etc and took his ball home ), fair enough, they have done well for themselves, they build nice system ( OTT in price though, but hey, thats just my opnion)
-
My point was that you are capable of writing an interesting column shiner, and so is Tosh. These are the sort of contributions that i would encourage. That does not mean that every random thought should get in.
Whether he is aware of it or not Matt has become a figurehead of DIY, and too a degree a spokesperson for it.This magazine does(should) not only write only about trade but about the wider community of window cleaning.

Sure thing. No problem with writing. What you see me write on here are just random thoughts and meanderings. I'm sure Tosh would tell you the same.
I have considered writing a shortish story about window cleaning. Not a "Confessions of.........." job but the real stuff. The funniest bits would be the stuff that goes on in my head as I work alone all day :)
-
I have considered writing a shortish story about window cleaning.
It wouldn't sell, mate.
Would you want to read a fictional story about plumbing?
-
I have considered writing a shortish story about window cleaning.

Would you want to read a fictional story about plumbing?
I wasn't thinking about selling it.
It was more about me just having a bit of fun. I used to go to creative writing classes some years back and I really enjoyed myself. I may have written a load of garbage but it doesn't matter so long as I enjoy it. I can't cook either but may join a basic cooking class next September just for the crack. There was a time I would only have signed up for something like that if I was already fairly proficient at it. I don't mind looking a bit silly as long as I can learn.
-
I thought the story about the old boy with leaded glass was good Tosh. And I wouldn't under estimate shiner, Hemingway wrote the old man and the sea about a fisherman, he won a pulitzer and the nobel prize. Obviously you have to edit and shape these things.
Matt's position i see slightly differently as he is a player rather than a commentator.
I'm going to shut up now and I promise I wont post again on this.
-
I recieved 2 copies of the mag so ive one spare if anyone hasnt got one yet
i think its good that we get a free mag the whole idea of sponsering something is to get your name on the front for publicity. I do like Ionics although they can be a bit expensive be good if they could come out with some products more affordable to people but they dont seem to be able to get the clamps on their poles right yet im on my 4th set in a year. This is something i will be taking up with them at the nec show as they never phoned back last week when they said they would.
regards
Brett

If I was paying for leaflets to put through house doors in the hope that some of them may become my customers, I don't think that I'd be in any hurry to print adverts from other window cleaners on them. I think the fact that Phil Hanson has even offered to accept adverts from Ionic's competitors say's a lot about the Ionic's organisation, I don't think that they are afraid of the competiton. I think that Ionic's competitors are plain stupid not to accept Phil's offer, its obvious that there's a lot of copies out there and most of them are Ionic's cutomers. I think that if any other WFP supplier opened up its customer database and accepted adverts Ionic would be in there like a shot!
You don't have to be a Genius, but it helps.
-
Exactly Genius if thats all it is -a leaflet- then to tap into anothers entire customer base by advertising on it would be a stroke of genius.
But that isn't all it is . This an independant and impartial publication full of informative articles topical issues, the latest news, views and opinions, facts humour, anything, but all window cleaning related. It is or should be our industries flagship publication. The fact that one company has refloated it is something we should all be gratefull for. It's just that it has so much untapped potential to be a real success.
I know I said I would shut up. :-X
-
Curious, you're a perceptive kind of guy, you write well and have a lot to say that's worth reading. Why not write an article for the mag?
-
Some of the threads on here are worth readiing, and possibly they could have a digest of the forums(apparently there are others). My weakness is I don't actually know a lot about window cleaning.
The mods must know a lot, and I expect they've got a lot of time on their hands ;D, so they are best placed for this kind of thing.
There are a lot of standout personalities on here though, inventors, suppliers, gnome kidnappers, etc. They all liven the place up, and in my humble opinion this is the kind of vitality that the mag needs.
-
This an independant and impartial publication
Hi Curious,
I'm happy to be shot down on this but the above statement is wrong.
I took out a subscription to support Phil in what I thought was an admirable venture - namely to provide an alternative to the Fed mag, which was only available to members. Funding for the initial issue was obtained from the good offices of Ionics, and I think this was supposed to be a stopgap measure while PWC found its feet. As has been seen, the publication needed a further influx of funds or could not have continued. Ownership of PWC magazine was taken over by Ionics.
This is not meant to sound anti-Ionics, but if I'd known from the outset that it was going to be owned/funded/sponsored by them, I have to say that I wouldn't have bought it. I cancelled my subscription because I don't see much point in paying to read a publication whose adverts are mostly for the same company/group of companies.
Stated Interests:-
I have been on an Ionics course, but have not bought any of their systems or equipment. I might attend further courses, and I might change my mind about purchases.
I still have green stars, but am not an "active" mod.

This issue was better than the last one. I don't know if it was free for me as I can't remember if my original subscription has run out.
I want this mag to succeed and if three-quarters of it is Ionics and it's free so be it. I'd rather a more balancedspread tho' and wonder why other manufacturer's do not advertise.
