this might be a silly question but here goes can your store your purified water outside in butts if they have lids on or not? any help would be great

Herbie,
Yes; I do and have done for 18 months.
I use two 210 litre water butts, side by side, sat on top of a wooden platform I built from some bits of two-by-four.
No problems.

why not just use an ibc?
They don't sell 'em in B & Q.

I have a lidded water butt which I have wrapped in cling-film (the lid) to stop spiders and insects getting inside through the air vents..

try a builders yard

Mine is an IBC tank, cost me nowt ;)
Shop around, ask at various factories, ie, soft drinks manufacurers, paper mills and so on, often these tanks are used just once to deliver various chemicals in and are then surplus to requirements, you can pick them up for pennies sometimes.
