This was on TV years ago. It was made available to a certain group of CCs, and although it is clear anyone could have copied it on video, and for personal use would not be a problem, the question of copyright and sharing with others was never resolved.

being a newbie, i turned down the chance of a rug doctor, kickin myself now!!!!!

guys
i can send you the file then all you need do is use a windows program called "windows movie maker" import it and then you can add your own intro etc.
then save it.
load it into a program to burn it to DVD make sure you burn it to a DVD +R as these will play on computers and prospects home TV DVD players.
over time you can keep adding different clips like this one and you'll build up a nice little DVD that will cover different subjects
ours has clips from stain pro, to clip on different cleaning methods like the ones on my site
http://www.carpet-upholstery-cleaning.co.uk/Videos/videos.htlm.htm
this is all very basic at the moment. i plan later in the year to get a HD video and shot some more professional looking clips.
When prospects start asking questions about the different methods just show the DVD. then they will see with their own eyes which one they what. as we use all three its no probs.

Anybody had this sent to them yet?
-
hi guys
it takes up to 7 hrs for Google video to update. i have made the change so you download it straight from my blog.
for your info the version on my blog has been compressed because Google will not take files over 100MG that's why the sound is low.
if you want the bigger version i will send by email when i get time over the next day or so.

Hi,
Thanks for the vid Ian.
They should do a return visit and show what the rest of us would pull out using a proper machine ;D.
Regarding copyright, stick in on Utube and link to it, they seem immune to copyright laws at the moment. If you want it on your site it could be linked to play from Utube.
Just a thought

hi accessCS
Richard and Judy did a piece on youtube last night, and i get the impression that they don't have a problem with this type of use. just do a search on youtube and you will see what i mean. they have loads of clips up.
it no different than clipping a news story and using it in you portfolio. after all its information that is helping people and does not have any commercial aspect of harm anyone.

-
Ian,
I just brought up the question of copyright, because I remember at the time, 'you know who', contacted the TV company to ask if it was okay to copy and distribute. I say it was never resolved, as the TV company never responded, so you may well be correct that it alright to do so. I have the video piece but never used it as I dont think it will change the mind of anyone who wants a carpetless floor unless their decision is purely because of their mistaken belief about carpets and alergies. Like the leaflet.
Dave.
-
This can easily be resolved by contacting, R & J and the TV production company and asking for permission to use the clip for commercial gain.
Then posting the reply on the forum, if and when one is received.
At the time of the original broadcast, some 5 years ago, I believe; permission was not given or indeed refused.
-
Ian i actually contacted them yesterday requesting a copy of the said clip , and offering to pay for it if need be, requested a dvd from them or a clearer download.
they did reply immideatly, the usual automated responce :), but to be fair I was mailed this morning with the answer , that they will see what can be done,
heres hoping, if in fact i do get a dvd , i would be able to copy for any one providing of course i get it :)

i see it as a public service and if this approach is use then no should have a problem. health issues are always of interest to people. and i know that richard like to be the first to bring things to the public attention.
with astham uk tell sufferers to rip up carpets. this need as much PR as possible. why would a charity advise this when it only deals with dust mite allergies and not other allergens that will now blow around on the hard floors.
this subject is and can have massive affect on the uk's health.
prevention is much cheaper than dealing with asthma.
questions have to be asked as why asthma uk and the medical profession does not change the position?
i think we all know why? money and the large amounts advertiser spend with say astham uk and how much the drug companies have a hold over doctors.
i think that if you could get richard and judy producers to look at this subject if would have a massive affect on health and attitudes.
the media just need to get hold off this and run with it and things would differently change.
sure we have a interest in this, but if not us who would speak up for all those people that suffer from asthma and are given the wrong advise?

come on guys let start fighting our corner together. i sent this email to richrad and judy
Hi Guys
why would asthma uk and doctors not want to know and prevent asthma attacks?
as a carpet cleaner i see the other side of the story. Have read
http://www.dustmites.150m.com/
Asthma UK tell sufferers to rip up carpets. this only deals with dust mites in carpet and this area does not provide them with the environment they need, the perfect place beds.
and why do asthma nurses not allowed to tell suffers about how to prevent attack?
I presented channel four with the same info when they did a program on asthma, and did not get any response. why?
This story needs a champion.

well the story on the box aint made my phone any more so who givs a sXXXt ?
-
Read below on the subject from January Newsletter at Home Care Services web site.
Dispatches were asked for a response but never answered.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Channel 4 Dispatches Programme and what they failed to mention.
If you followed the above programme recently concerning allergies then you might be forgiven for believing that having carpets in the home is the route of all evil as the 'team' recommended that they be replaced with hard floors or wood to prevent house dust mite build up.
Much of the information is out dated and in some cases completely wrong.Removal of your only source of filter to trap and hold the the allergens for you to vacuum will result in increased levels of allergy not reduced as was implied.
'Replace the carpet with hard floor ie laminate, wood or tiles and you will see a drop in house dust mite'
Just how can this be true, how can any dust particles and hence dust mite and their droppings possibly be trapped on a smooth floor ? The answer is of course they can't.The dust is continually on the move as you open a door or window the vacuum created lifts the dust into the air as does walking into a room, sitting down, getting up, any motion causes the dust to move and rise only to settle elsewhere on your clothes, the furniture, curtains or even worse in your bedding.
Anyone who has laminated flooring will know how the dust collects around the edge of a room, under the chairs or bed, you are forever trying to sweep it up which in its self creates more movement.
Carpets will filter and trap dust & soil particles holding them in place for you to vacuum. If you have a decent vacuum with a HEPA filter you can remove large quantities of dust mite on a daily basis, its all about proper indoor management and getting your carpets cleaned on a regular basis ie annually.
If you only vacuum once a week then of course dust will build up in the carpet, it must be done daily.Just imagine what a laminated floor would look like if you did not bother to vacuum it or sweep for a week or more.
The German Asthma and Allergy Foundation recently carried out their own intensive research in to the problem measuring the fine dust particles in indoor air.
The results of the work was quite revealing in that average fine dust content of air was 62.5mg/m3 over smooth flooring ie wood and tiles but only 30.4mg/m3 over carpeted floors.
It is worth reminding those that need reminding that the World Health Organisation recommended limit is 50mg/m3, properly managed carpet is way below these levels, yet hard floors way above.Something borne out by the Swedish experiment which found that over a fifteen year period as carpet usage fell by 70%, there was a 300% rise in the incidence of allergic reactions within the home and office.A 100% rise every 5 years, frightening statistics that goes some way in explaining the explosion in airborne allergic reactions.
Unfortunately Dispatches failed to mention any of this and all attempts to put a balanced view across from the carpet industry fell on death ears as it did not meet the agenda for the programme.
So before you decide to rip out your expensive carpets consider this first:
1: Buy yourself a decent vacuum with a HEPA filter option, its much cheaper than a new wood floor
2: Vacuum daily not weekly to keep allergen levels down
3: Use all the tools supplied and vacuum around the edges of the room, the curtains and the sofas and chairs at least once a week.
4:Have your carpets professionally cleaned at least once every 18 months, upholstery once every year and curtains once every 2-3 years. This along with your daily house management will prevent house dust mite build up and keep allergens at bay or at least the effects reduced.
5: Get your mattress cleaned and treated for dust and bed bug droppings at least once a year, preferably twice. This is where you spend a third of your time and yet is the most neglected of all areas when it comes to personal hygiene.
6: If all the above seems like a lot of work and you would rather just have a hard floor down 'and be done with it' then bear this in mind; Soft surfaces are less expensive and less time consuming to maintain than hard surfaces, according to A Life-Cycle Cost Analysis for Floor Coverings, published by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), March 2002. Cleaning carpet instead of hard surfaces can reduce material costs by 49% and labour costs by 64%.In other words a hard floor will be take more of your time and money to keep clean and healthy simply by not being able to trap allergens and soil.A lot more of your time will be taken up cleaning and trying to improve indoor air quality, the opposite to what to were trying to achieve.Ask around at work, at the school gates in the pub, you will be amazed at how many of your friends and family have removed laminated type flooring and gone back to carpets for this very reason.
If you follow the basic rules 1-5 you can enjoy years of healthy, comfortable, warm carpeted living. For more in depth information on carpet & health and general carpet information visit The Carpet Foundation.
-
lets just admit it, all the experts say carpet are bad for dust/dust mite senitive people, and it makes sense removing carpet is removing there habitat,
you dont see monkeys where the forest where cut down.
not suprised they didnt answer Trevor, oh a carpet cleaner dont agree with us, lol.
air humidity plays a big part in dustmite population, dryer homes have alot less dustmites.
basement flats can be particularly bad for sufferers.
-
its not just about dust mites its about other allergens and nasties
we would only need one person in the media to take this on and it would network though the media.
if you say nothing then nothing changes.
with regards dust mites, its beds that cause the biggest problem. and how many have their mattress cleaned or Evan vac them?
you can see yourself as one, a carpet cleaner, or two, a professional cleaner. and as an expert would would educate people on hygiene.
At the moment the media has got hold on the "healthy food" when they have said everything they will be looking for other copy lines.
our time will come, talk to people now and they do start to see the problem with dust and hard floors. its just a mater of telling them whats in that dust and what it will do to them and more importantly their kids
check out the video on my blog "hard floors and your child health"

also this study
German Study Declares Carpet the Healthy Flooring Option
An independent study undertaken by the Germany Asthma and Allergy Foundation (DAAB) and the German Society for Environment and Indoor Analysis was recently completed and the findings of the study proved conclusively that the indoor air in a carpeted room was of much better quality than that in rooms with smooth floors.
The study looked at the content of fine dust particles in the air over smooth floors in 186 rooms and over carpet in 104 rooms. The findings showed that the indoor air in a carpeted room contained less than half the amount of fine particulate dust than in rooms with smooth floors. Indeed, the dust level over a smooth floor at 62.9 micrograms per cubic metre was found to be higher than the recommended European Standard.
The findings come on the back of other recent independent research which has supported the carpet industry’s claims that carpet is the healthy flooring option. There are several studies in the open literature that would support that conclusion and many of them can be found on CRI’s website carpet- health.org.

Not true craig,
Its not a carpet cleaner telling them ::) its the Swedish goverment, the World Health Organisation, the American Asthma Society, the German Goverment study on indoor health care etc etc etc prolonged 10 year studies prove carpets improve indoor quality.
Remove the carpets and the dust mite problem increases along with allergies, simple as that! Just doesn't make very good television.
All properly constructed studies prove this, not the two bob British studies carried out here with the backing of the hard floor industry.

So then guys any more news on this vid and if we can use it etc?
Matt

Would also like to know, could help with repeat business etc.
Cheers,

guys
a week or so ago Richard and Judy did a piece on "youtube" and the impression i git was that they don't have a problem with clip of them on it.
their are loads of interview on youtube from the show. that's not to say that they would not change their minds at any point.
like most things the first thing if you look at this from a legal point would be a warning to stop using it. so until then i will use it. everyone of my customers gets a copy on the dvd that they get in my intro pack.
when they see the list of whats on the dvd they always comment on the Richard and Judy clip. i don't show it there just a run down of whats on the dvd in the pack.
its a personal call for each of us. but I cant see a problem.
i know of Internet businesses that take content from other sites and only use with none of their own until someone tells them to stop. and they just say sorry and stop. its not right but, it go on, and people make large amounts of money doing it.

Hi Guys
Some I RIP others i use power point and then convert.
we have loads off info at our hands its just in the wrong format. i have taken so tech stuff from books and used it.
I have gone as far as using sinners circle to explain the different methods. The reason is to put so called exclusive systems used by franchises in their place.
as i said it basic at the moment. but i cant wait until September when i can start to learn how to improve my skills at night school.
By using all the different media in ways that will improve how prospect view what we do. as cleaners the level of skill that we have and use each day protects our customers against damage and poor results.
Prospects and customers don't value this and its our job to communicate this it a way that they can see benefits in. basically what NCCA and others organizations are doing. but i am trying to work from the bottom up.
I already know how I am going to turn the Richard and Judy into one that will give the same message but in a much better quality.
A lots of the stuff is boring to customers but its there and you get people that what to know the in and outs so i don't have to waste time explaining to them anymore.
I would not want to produce something to slick as this turns prospect off as the find it big business and think the price will be too high for them. its funny how can someone think this without knowing. often i have had this said to me but when i tell them they say that its a lot cheaper than they expected.
As i update my stuff i will post the old stuff on my blog for others to use free of charge. I would hope other would do the same? there was a TM video floating around a few weeks ago does anyone know anything about this? If i can get a copy I can work it for every ones use.
Respect
