Title: Identity checks for new staff
Post by: Jenny Slater on February 09, 2007, 06:24:26 pm
Can anyone recommend what indentity checks I should undertake when employing new staff?  I was looking into CRB checks but can't get these done as I don't fit the criteria of working for the elderly, children or vulnerable.  I am looking to employ a domestic cleaner to take into my Client's homes.  Any recommendations would be appreciated.

can't you tell crb that some of your clients are elderly / vulnerable.
I am sure if you approach one of the umbrella bodies out there they will get it done for you

I've approached several of the umbrella companies and they have all said that they wouldn't apply on my behalf.  I do have clients that are OAPs and others that have kids, but generally we have keys to the properties and don't see our clients.  Each of the umbrella companies I have approached have said that I don't fit the criteria.  Hence wanting to see how other people get around this problem.  So, if you can recommend an umbrella company that might help I would be grateful.  Otherwise, are there any other checks you can suggest?

If you are unable to carry out CRB checks, simply insist on references from previous employers.

The law requires you to carry out 'reasonable' identity checks for employees.
You should insist on the following as a minimum:

Photo ID. (driving licence, passport etc.)
Utility bill. (showing name and address, and less than one month old)
Document containing NI number. IE: P45

For employees without a P45, simply fill out form P46. Within a few weeks the Inland Revenue will confirm their status for you.

As for trusworthyness, for employers it is usually just a matter of good judgement and luck that you employ an honest person.

Hope this helps
