I would mount the ro on the bulkhead below the pole tubes.  Keeps it out of the way, nice and safe.  What size tank you putting in there??

I think i might have a major problem fitting the tank coz one of the metal brackets will be right on the wheel arch so i dont know how im going to get round that.
The bracket is the shape of a top hat and its the bit at the bottom thats going to be the problem..

I couldnt fit the 4040ro on the bulk head coz on the driver side of the bulk head it sticks out to much so i put it on the metal tank strap..

bazzy are you going to put any metal straps front to back of the tank??
your pics show two straps that go side to side and it looks good but I would be concerned that there is nothing securing the tank front to back?
hope that makes sense!!

the way mine is fitted I have one side to side (same as your two)
and one front to back.
I bought mine as a fitting kit specifically for the tank -but feel the money I paid was well OTT.
when mine was fitted by my mechanic we went to a small steel fabricators to make up some thick plates for top and bottom of the metal straps.
I gave him £10 (drink) for the 8 plates and he was happy as larry.
When he brought them down to us he asked who made the metal straps as he could knock them up no problem for £20.
All he needed were the dims and job done!
I paid around £150 for the 'fitting kit' but got 8 free bolts!!

Post by: Davew on January 19, 2007, 08:59:46 pm
Err Baz I was going to say the same - in a front end smash it looks like your tank will shoot through the bands! I was thinking of having a box section welded to fit around the base, bolted to the floor then strap the tank to that? Keep up the work!
Title: Re: Stage by Stage Van Setup
Post by: mike richardson on January 19, 2007, 09:03:27 pm
i made my own from steel bar bent to shape in a vice painted with hammerite cost about £15 for two bolts were about £3 plates were made out af metal plate cast £4 cheaper than fitting kit!
Title: Re: Stage by Stage Van Setup
Post by: Davew on January 19, 2007, 09:05:21 pm
Russ, I've kept your pics, do you know what your bands are made from and what sort of thickness they are? Did you say that was a 650ltr tank?

not a great pic but you can see the strap side to side and the other front to backof the tank (if you look closely).you can also see the plates it is sitting on.
two small plates on the top and two larger plates underneath the chasis.
yes it is a 650 tank .
not sure on thickness of straps
will measure them tomorrow if you want to know ?

Just thinking of ways of reducing the amount of metal and weight to secure my tank. Looked at someones pressure washer tank the other day and he only had it in a wooden base frame (scarey).

Yep thats the one Russ, what happens to the hoses after they go through the floor?
Title: Re: Stage by Stage Van Setup
Post by: russ_clark on January 19, 2007, 09:39:07 pm
the hoses are cable tied to the chasis under the van and run out to the towing hook just under rear bumper.
they are cable tied to the tow hook and I have hozelock connectors so I can pull the hosereels out of van connect up ,lock van and work away .
hope that helps.
the pics I have are not great as when they were taken I had just fitted everything up and was as excited as bazzy! ;D ;D

Saves cutting the van sides for a port! Just pop some grommits in when it's time to pass on the van - brilliant.

Title: Re: Stage by Stage Van Setup
Post by: Davew on January 20, 2007, 08:38:08 am
Like the idea of coming through the stoppers Bazzy would look very neat. Is there a connection that can be mounted to give a solid point there, a bit like the waste outlet on a caravan? Sort of like a tap fitting on the back if you see what I mean? Only thing is though will it not get crushed when the door swings open?
Title: Re: Stage by Stage Van Setup

agree with davew those rubber bungs are protection for when the doors are fully open. I would definately not bring the hoses out there- just my opinion mate

Russ, how are you filling your van tank? Are you using a submersible? are you filling through the large cap or is there a connection you can use to attatch the trasfer pipe to? Ive just finished putting my static system together it took me a while but seems ok if a little slow.

In the first picture you can see 2 pipes the one on the left going through the floor is my feed pipe and the one on the right going through the floor is the pipe that comes from the Shurflo pump.
The second picture is the ends of the 2 pipes, one for filling my tank and the other will connect to my minibore and away i go..

Busy weekend Baz! Looking good, are you happy with the payload? got my 650ltr tank coming tomorrow I'm just a little concerned about the all up weight on a Dispatch 900kg. might need to take two kids to school too! Russ do you dash back to your IBC and submersible when it gets near the top?

Title: Re: Stage by Stage Van Setup
Post by: russ_clark on January 21, 2007, 08:06:55 pm
Davew yes I do a dash when I am on my own but normally there are two of us so not too much of a problem.I have considered a shut off type float but I have not really got a clue how that works.
Re the weight I also take two kids to school most mornings (4year old/5 year old) so I never fill to the absolute max unless I know I am working alone and not got school runs to do.
I have been reading these posts re waste water and that is something that bugs me big time.I am also on a meter and have a 300gpd ro .I believe for every 1000ltre IBC tank full I am dumping twicw as much in waste so think my water bill will be substantially more.I do not really know how I can make my set up more efficient i.e. boosters, etc any advice??
cheers Russ

I started up my IBC yesterday for the first time with a 300 boosted gpd unit just wish the ro water came out as fast as the waste! Luckily I'm not on a meter. I initially felt bad about the waste water. My solution was to drill through my garage wall and into the downpipe outside - now I can't see the waste so I'm less worried about it now ;)

First of all I would like to say well done. You have made a very professional looking job of it ;)

Secondly, I may be wrong but the angle of your pump doesn't look flush?
Try and keep it as straight as you can as you could put strain on the motor brushes which could result in your pump wearing out quicker.

I was told that these pumps will prime up to 3 feet. Maybe try and keep your pump lower down and closer to the outlet.

Cheers

Matthew

Question...

What type of hose, size hose is that?  What kind/size fittings are those?
Title: Re: Stage by Stage Van Setup

All i can say its just yellow hose that i got from my local Diy shop and the fittings are hose lock type.

Title: Re: Stage by Stage Van Setup
Post by: Bazzy1999 on January 22, 2007, 07:01:32 pm
Davew... I got it from Wicks in the plumbing section i think its a gas fitting but you need to get a reducer for the tank outlet.

It took 5 hours to fill the 650L tank by the way.

Five hour fill time seems good to me, about half the time of my static system - just remember to turn it off before bedtime. I'll pop into wicks tomorrow.

Baz, how's the van doing - all finished? earning you a fortune? can you get your poles inside or will you have to go through the bulkhead?
Title: Re: Stage by Stage Van Setup
Post by: Bazzy1999 on January 26, 2007, 07:52:18 pm
Davew... The van is 95% finished and ive only been doing my house and freinds houses just to get the hang of it.
As for the poles that is a problem it looks like ive got to cut a hole in the metal bulkhead, i didnt want to but ive got no choice.
Still trying to find someone around here to make me a metal bracket to go the other way across the tank but im having no joy all they keep saying is its a small job and we are to busy.
Once thats sorted out and the van graphics are on then its all done.  ;D

I take it that is a DI vessel on top of the tank?
Is that wheelie bin in use at all?
To protect your RO membrane, get another DI vessel and fit it in the hose line before your 2 prefilters. Fill it with water softening resin.
Also get a clear plastic 10" salt vessel with hose in and hose out with basic hoselocks on. This is just bolted to the wall and is independant of the filter system.
After every tank fill, put regeneration salt in the plastic vessel, connect your hose pipe to the inlet side of this vessel and connect the outlet hose of the vessel to the inlet on your softerner vessel...from the outlet on your softerner vessel, connect a length of hose and run to drain.
Turn tap on and the salt is dissolved into the water stream and runs through your softerner vessel removing all the calcium and magnesium that the softerner takes out the water...when the salt vessel has clear water in it, turn off tap and disconnect hoses...reconnecting the hose line to the inlet of your now regenerated softerner vessel.
This ensures all calcium and magnesium are removed from the water before they get near your pre filters and more importantly, your RO membrane.

you dont change it...just keep regenerating it with the salt.

I assume there must be some sort of shelf life to the resin but I have been using the same softening resin for coming up to 2 years now.
I still have half a bag so may change it just to clear the shed.

What submersible pump do you use and how long does it take to transfer/fill up your van tank?

Baz,

Is your pump 12v or mains operated?

Would your pump manage to pump 30ft to my van which is about 2m higher than my ibc tank?

Is it worth the extra money to get a softner + salt + the extra vessels as my tap TDS is around 250

cheers

I sometimes wonder why you guys go for these 40/40 RO's with all the extra back washing and salt regen etc , when i think of flushing my RO its just a case of turning the flush valve over for 10/15 mins job done

Maybe i'm not seeing the bigger picture  :-\

we don`t HAVE to have water softerner in place...this is optional in order to prolong the life of the membrane.
Flushing a 4040 is exactly the same...turn the tap on and allow a full flow of water through the RO for 10-15 minutes and its done.

The main reason for a 4040 is quicker production of water.
I get 400 litres in 4 hours.

Saying that, mine came with the set up I purchased...looking at the price of one new...I would think twice!!

Steve do you use a pump to acheive that?

'400 litres in 4hours'

no...normal tap pressure and I have never measured the PSI of my tap water...it certainly doesn`t gush out but has a good flow from the tap.

Do you have a valve on the reject water going out of the RO?

Is this how you acheive the results?

You must be recovering a large amount of the water?

I have a valve on the ro to change the ratio of pure/waste water. It runs at 50% giving a good stream of water from the ro at average of 004TDS and an equally good (bad) stream going to waste.
