You have to be turning over 60,000 a year before you register for vat.

once you turn over 60k a yr or more you have to register for VAT, if you turnover less than 60K the choice is yours.

it does not make sense to become v.a.t registered if you only do domestic cleaning cos i dont tink people will be keen to pay there are plenty of cowboys around so i dont tink you can recover your v.a.t beck and have to pay it from your own pocket

If your income warrants VAT registering then you have no choice. At the moment the threshold is 61k, but will probably change again in the next budget. As for your customers leaving you for a "dodgy" dealer... hmmmm that could happen, but if you have given them a good service all round, you should not lose many, especially as now more of the general public do not want their hard earned cash which they have paid taxes on, going to someone who doesn't. When we registered we were wary of this and sent out letters to ALL our customers to inform them why we had to. (we took advise from longstanding customers what to write) The majority said oh well if you have to it shows that  you are conducting your business the right way and alot of them congratulated us. Out of 500 odd we lost 4 who couldn't understand why window cleaning was vatable! It's not, it is your business that is!
