As it will need to stop a pressurised flow you would have to use  toilet type system valve with a ball kock. I don't know what type of fitting you would need to connect the pipe to it though. Your local plumbers merchant could help you with that one. Dai

You will loose at least 8% of your capacity with a float valve.

Just had a look at that one Gaz, it looks like a toilet systern one, and if you look at the tap connector, it consists of a reducer and a quike fit conector, all available from your local DIY stores.

Farmers have them fitted to cattle watering troughs. You can look at one of them if you live in a rural area. Dai

Just came accross this post and I went straight out to the van and took a picture of my float valve set up in the 250L lay flat tank in the van.

Please excuse the mess as I just quickly positioned things to give you a rough idea.

My 1000L tank of purified water is 20m away from where I park my van at night.
I just park up and connect the hose from the big tank and fill up! I have a submersible pump in the 1000l tank with wire  taped to the hose running the 20m's to the van and I have a plug on the end which I cnnect to a socket in the van.

I'm not very good at explaining things so I will stop there and hopefully the picture will explain the rest?

Oh...... I power my submersible pump and float switch from my lesiure battery and through a relay.
