Post by: julianbiggs on December 05, 2006, 09:25:19 pm
Hi i'm doing some builders cleans and they have left a lot of grouting dust on the tiles which when you wash. it appears to be clean but five minutes later it has sheened over to appear dusty again.

What is the best product to clean this with ??

I dont know if this is of help mate......but when we have come across poor workmanship like that i.e waterproof grout smothered tiles, we have complained to the site manager.

The bigger house builders will call the tilers back to put it right, and so they should!

It is part of the tilers job to clean the grout off, the cleaner should clean off any powdery residue and buff, thats all,

Having said that, f it a one off, complain any way, and use a  scourer with a limescale remover....and plenty of elbow grease !  ;)

Dead simple, window mop and blade with lots of water, polish dry with scrim, dont forget the fairy!!!!!!!

Dont complain to the site manager, you will not be asked to complete any other jobs for them, dont forget to charge the correct rate, regards.

the best method i've found is a brush attachment on a vacuum and vacuum the tiles first then buff them up with dry microfibre cloth!

hope this helps

will :)

I dont think Julian is refering to grout 'dust' left on the tiles, more like a definite 'layer' of waterproof grout left on them. If that is the case, then you can 'buff' with a microfibre cloth till the cows come home!

We complained to a Bovis site manager recently, about house after house with this very problem, the tilers had to come back and 'finish' the job!

If it is a 'one off', then maybe, grit your teeth and get on with it.

thats just the reply i was looking for. We have washed them and washed them and washed them......... last time we used Cillit Bang!!!!!! Did not shift it at all!!! Well we're not cleaning them again...our builders clean contract does not say clean all the bathroom tiles 5 times!!!!

They'll have to get the tiler's back cause i am not cleaning them again!!

Thank you for that reply!!!

We have used Cillit Bang or similar with a scourer and lots of elbow grease, bloody hard work though!!

Sounds like the tiles are smothered! It does happen from time to time, but, instead of getting stuck in and cleaning the tiles, you end up putting a 'tradesman's' work right, not what you've priced for really.

Let us know the outcome.
