Keep your applicator and any cloths you use for washing in the bucket,  these act as baffles, 'O' and don't have a full bucket.

A friend of mine uses a cool box with lockable lid and if needed he also uses is as a step.

First of all I will state the obvious by saying to make sure it's a rectangular bucket rather than a builders bucket.  Ok so you do that anyway - good   ;D  .
Don't fill it any more than a third to half way at most and, as others have said, keep a few tools in there.  The real big help though is to lay a scrim on top of it.  Alternatively, you can buy them with lids on.
I keep mine in the passenger footwell.  If you have a passenger, you may need to re-think that though.

I did that at first and it took paint off the roof.  I had two circles on top of my van   ;D

How much water do you need in your bucket? I only put about an inch in the bottom and change it when it gets dirty.

I keep my bucket in one of them large gorilla grab buckets in the boot, any water spills into second bucket which you can easily empty at next job, i also throw my dirty cloths in there from first cleans till i get home.
