If you don't mind me asking how did you break it was it just very brittle!

was on of those real bad blade wrecker paint jobs if u blade it looks terrible cos flaky paint lines as soon as sun comes out {altho doesnt look like much chance of that in sussex at moment}
so i was polishing them i can honestly say i hardly exerted any pressure at all as they are so filthy on inside ive never sweated over it

Old glass is very difficult to find , why not ask him if you can replace it with a new pane until you can find an old pane at a restoration store or antique shop just to give yourself a bit of time
Then keep an eye on any old houses that are being renovated until you find one, dont worry about the size just take it somewhere to get it cut
There is some place in Germany that still makes it (in bavaria i think)

What about asking a glazier ?
I broke one a few years ago, old property, the customer got onto their glazier, who replaced it, cost me a tenner back then.

Health & safety wise, new glazing has to be a certain thickness, quote the regs at him.
Also, if you should be lucky enough to find an ancient pane of glass you can cut to size...it's a nightmare to cut!
It's just so thin and brittle with age.
Or just get hold of some old greenhouse glass, there is plenty of that about, go visit a local glazier and tell him you need a piece of glass for your shed or greenhouse, they are sure to have some old offcuts lying around.
Got any local garden centres around you? Speak to the manager, or one of the guys out back, they'll have glass lying around too, and it'll be old ropey stuff....just the job ;)

cheers for all your advice guys tip top once again

If it was me then obviously I would feel bad about breaking the pane of glass... But, if I could only find a new piece of glass then that's what I would offer the customer - at the end of the day you would be replacing what you have broken.
Don't waste too much time looking for an old piece of glass! How much is the window cleaning account worth?

Try Ventrolla, they are a sash box repair and revival company. They take out old glass and put new glass in as part of the renovation. Look in your local yellow pages for the number as it is a big franchise, or call 0800 378 278 to find out who your local guy is and have a word with him.

You could go round at night and put a few more panes through with a catapault.
Then you could ask her where she got the replacement glass from.javascript:replaceText(' ;D', document.postmodify.message);
