I'm still shaking, happened an hour ago. Went canvassing, person opened the door, heard two dogs....dogs rushed out, owner didn't even hold them back or tried to stop them, and one bit my coat right above the crotch! Wouldn't let go, owner stepped in and dog let go. Was a terrier sorta small legged dog, but still.
Just had a new WC coat, so I told him that he should pay for it (two holes in it) still totally in shock and left. (was very scared when I was younger for dogs, might sound silly to some, but not nice)
Called my girlfriend to help me calm down, and she said later that I should sue him for negligence and for emotional stress etc. There were no signs on the door or on the house saying beware. The owner even said he had bitten him before!!!!!!
What should I do? And where to go further with this? I'm still stressed out about it! :-[ :-X :-\
I took pictures of the house (3) and wrote down the time it happened, just to make sure.
I mean what if it was a little kid? I don't even wanna think about what would have happened!!!!!!!

report it to the Police mate.
They have to deal with it under the Dangerous Dogs Act.
You should have any injuries looked at and photographed.
Go see your quack too.
It could have been a youngster at the door !
the dog could / should be put down and the owner prosecuted.
You could also be entitled to compensation for any injuries.
or just put it down to experience and do not do their windows :(

It just bit my coat, it didn't bite me (thank goodness) :(

report it to the police mate. It may not be the 1st time that the dog has gone for someone !
I would, otherwise like you say....it could be a young child next time.

Although its a horrible experience as it didn't actually bite you and you didn't sufer any injuries I'm not sure there is a lot you can do about it?

Don't know if anyone is aware of this but if there is a sign on the door/gate saying beware of the dog, The owner is saying my dog is Dangerous and then if it bites you, they don't have a leg to stand on.
If you are thinking of sueing them, get your bum down the doctors, so he can treat you for stress/shock its no good going to doctors next week.
I have been bitten twice, and just past it off to experience.
I have even pinned a dog down with my ladder, every time I went to the property the little Sh darling would attack me, got fed up with it pinned the dog down told the owner next time I would kill it, but found it easier to dump the customer.
If this has happened now, whots going to happen every time you go to clean there windows?

I know it can be a problem. There have been two occasions that a dog has tried to bite me in the course of my work. Once it was a tiny screechy hairbrush on legs that nipped me on the shin. It died a few weeks later (nothing to do with me - honest). Another time some customer's dog came running for me and bit the trouser leg of my overalls. I yelled blue murder at it and it ran off LOL. I was half way through that job and I told the owner that I was going and wouldn't be coming back. No payment required. I have turned jobs down before because I didn't trust their dogs.
I can be alarming if you've had bad experiences before - especially early in your life. I am not a dog lover anyway myself.

Yes there is.
The Dangerous Dogs Act ,Your dog doesn''t have to bite or injure a person to be deemed as dangerous.....causing someone to be afraid for their safety is enough and could be PTS.
People should not have dogs like this, There is no need as you can get help by taking a dog to behavior training classes.

14 years in the post office always remember taking the mail to a house no signs, got to the door 2 dogs went for me did not bite me but i was pinned to the fence some one psassing helped get the dogs away, reported it to the police, dogs had went for a old lady out a walk (did not bite her ) just before going for me, police went to house that afternoon dogs ended up biting police man.
ended up in court owner plead guilty,fined £300 dogs took of him,me day of work and treated to my dinner

Gonna call the police tomorrow....I mean, darn it! I went all the way from Guildford to Crawley, and got me a supernice coat, he only has to pay the money, but I have to pay the petrol to get there etc etc. What a shame. :(

The Dangerous Dogs Act only applies to four Breeds of Dog,
the Ammendment of 1997 only adds to this,(the way the act should be applied) 99% of All dogs are not covered by this,and as it was on private property the Act does not apply,only the exemptions do...that is if you own one of the four breeds banned you can have an exemption to own the dogs as long as they remain away from the public and not less loose...
I think they can still be charged with an offence,but it would not be under The Dangerous Dogs Act.
Also,if you do inform the police,how would that effect your business?Im not saying dont,but take a long think first....dog owners are normally known to everyone.....

Don't hessistate in reporting him to the police 1st thing in the morning. I reported someone a few years ago because their dog bit me. It also bit 2 little children and was put down!!!

First of all, not this guy, it was a serious comes out once a year moron, and what IF it would have been a little kid? I'd feel so horrible if I knew it, and didn't do anything about it! ;)
Every customer of me would have done the same thing, wouldn't you? It got nothing to do with my business!

As I said,I didnt tell you not to report it,just to think....
If it had happened to me and it has,I dont know what I would have done,and thats bieng honest.....It would depend on the Breed and Size of the Dog......as a rule the smaller the dog the more likely it is to bite/grab hold of you,the difference is a Big Dog can rip you apart and a smaller dog can still hurt like hell but no lasting damage,and you must be in two minds to report it or you would have done it straight away,to err on the side of caution you should report it,as you say what if it was a small child?hindsight is a wonderfull thing and if you could be sure it wouldnt happen again then you wouldnt need to.

Well he already bitten the man once, now me....I don't wanna have it bite anyone else to be really honest with you! It could well have been the crotch!!! :-X

I'm going to play devils advocate a little here, so please bear that in mind as you read on!!
You say, or imply rather, that dogs make you nervous, was this dog attacking you or greeting you?
I have dogs of my own so I'm very comfortable with them, I've had dogs come up to me and wrap there jaws around my arm, but they are not attacking me, they are greeting me and being realy friendly, tails wagging and walking me to the door.
Ditto small dogs that hold onto your trouser leg and do the same thing.
If you yank your arm away from some big dog then you can end out hurting yourself (rather than the dog hurting you) or tearing your trouser leg if you pull your leg away in a panic thinking that you are being attacked.
Ok, I know that from what you say, it sounds like the dog came out snarling and nasty and actually leapt up at you and sank his teeth into your coat, but it also needs pointing out that if someone is terrified of dogs, some dog coming over and barking in happy greeting, or just barking because the door has been knocked, because of their fear of dogs, what they see and hear can be missinterpreted.
Mind you, if that dog actually damaged your coat, you shouldn't have left before getting the owner to agree to compensate you for the damage, proving it afterwards won't be easy.
And if the dog was attacking you, you should have reported it straight away.
I'd have told the guy straight away i was going to report him too.

I got nipped by one of those yappy,pooey long-haired sausage dogs once. Luckily for the little s##t the owner was in the garden at the time otherwise the little bugger would have got my boot right in his boat-race.

At the end of the day, you shouldn't have been on their property in the first place. The dogs are only protecting their owner. Canvassing should be BANNED!

HI JEFF, think u find having a sighn up makes no diff att all u hav to keep dogs under control even if they are on private prop, if a burglar raids a yard and it has sighns saying dogs are in here and they will bite if u enter and u do enter and they do bite u then the owners in big trouble !!!

anyway ignoring all prejudiced rants and getting back to the thread. I have been bitten a couple of times by customers dogs both of which were supposed to be ok and nothing to worry about. One of them i even said to the chap would like to bite me to which he laughed and the dog went for me in front of him to his utter embarrasment.
I wasnt injured, just shaken up and didnt bother taking it any further. I cant stand the sueing culture we have and delivering a service we could get sued one day.
But i got to think, why do dogs go for us if they are usually ok. I reckon its all the winding up they get when in doors and we are cleaning. It winds them up and when they get a chance they bite!!

I decided not to call the police, if I'll get my money, fine, I just don't wanna go through all the trouble. Sounds silly, but I've a lot on my mind. :)
