A friend asked me to clean a very heavily soiled Chinese rug. Usually I would turn this type away because (in my opinion) it was too heavily soiled to get good results. However as he's a friend of mine and it has some sentimental value I agreed to give it my best shot. The rug measures 12 feet by 9.
I spent an hour vacuuming front and back.
I pre sprayed (woolsafe of course!) and left to dwell for 10 minutes.
I then used my gold and white brushes and host machine to agitate.
I extracted with Prochem liquid woolsafe.
The results showed a marked improvement but the rug still had areas of soiling that were not to an acceptable level.
My question is.... can somebody give advice on improving the clean or can anyone recommend a rug cleaning specialist?

Steve, did you vac the back of the rug. These rugs, especially heavily soiled ones can contain kilos of dry soil. The best way to remove it is to place it upside down over a sheet or better still over some kind of grill then vac the back. The vac must have a beater bar on the brush for maximum effect.
We used to submerge clean rugs and even after beating the crap out of it to remove the dry soil it sometimes took over 20 minutes of flushing with a hosepipe until the water ran clear.
Using HWE you may have to give it a few cleans to get any improvement.

waht did you use to clean the rug wand,handtool ect.
i have been cleaning rugs off site for approx 5 yrs now & all rugs are cleaned using the rdm .

John: I did vac the back of the rug. However I didn't beat the dry soil out.
Lee: I used my Kleenrite upholstery tool. What do you mean by RDM?

If you still need it cleaned I will clean it for you. Other than that the best way to get rid of the dry soil is to use an air line and blow it out. You will always remove more soil if not all this way as opposed to any type of vaccing. Best, Dave.

The Kleenrite Upholstery tool is for Upholstery only and not strong enough for rugs with heavy, deep yarn bundle.
You will get better results with a Prochem glide master or similar jet down type hand tool.
As the other guys have said though ,you do need to vac these rugs to death,some can take 30 minutes of thourough front and back vaccing before HWE.

Going by the time taken and the unsatisfactory results, you might be better wrapping such a rug and sending it to Franklins of Sheffield.
They have the knowledge, experience and equipment to clean rugs expertly.
The rugs have the dry soiling shaken out of them on a flat, slatted platform then they are cleaned by total immersion, followed by drying over poles, in a controlled environment.
The company have been cleaning rugs for about 110 years.

I agree Franklins rug beater has to be seen to be believed, the day I visited the beat a big entance mat , coconut matting. It took half a bin full of grit and dust out ! It is hard to describe the beater, kind of like a big metal bar that swings back and forth beating the rug. Franklins have a contact with a national chain of drycleaners and all thier rugs go to thier facility in Sheffield. Any problem rugs , I would send straight there.

Ive one this size at the minute and its a stinker.
I know it will look 200% cleaner after Im done but have advised customer that the tea, wine, vomit, curry stains may not and probably will not come out completely.
You can only do so much.

There is a firm closer than Sheffield, they are based to the west of London, their name escapes me if I said Thames Cleaning and drying it would sound daft but its something like that.
They have the similar plant as Franklins.
If you remember the Thames came up and flooded all the rich houses along there, Rolf Harris, Parky, Billy Connelly etc etc, a few years ago and previously 20 years or so ago.
Because of this the houses along there cant get there carpets and contents Insured so they have hard floors and Oriental rugs.
I havent used them but I know a collegue who had a big silk rug done there and it was brilliant, you can see it being done evidently.
If you look on the back of a Fllockati rug they are the preferred cleaning people on the label.
Sorry cant be more helpful but someone out in west London should know.

You could always send them to us and we will clean them for you. Cleaning should not be a lengthy process if you know what you're doing. The results we achieve are excellent and most of our clients are upper crust (abit like me) and are fussy - can't remember the last complaint we had!

rosina you seem to have had a few complaints since you have been on here!, we all have upmarket clients,but few of us are as impressed by them as you seem to be,get your head out of your ***** and get a life.
