In the photo's of van systems, why do some put the pump so high up?
Does it not make any difference? I thought it should be as low as possible.

Yes the pump should be as low as possible, even lifing the water a couple of feet will rediuce the outlet pressure and make the pump work harder, plus there is always a possibility of air entering if the water runs back into the tank.

true, with diaphragm pumps the inlet should ideally be gravity fed to avoid creating negative pressure in the inlet pipe (negative pressure is when the pressure is below 1ATM or 1.013x100000Pa or just plain old surrounding air pressure), a result of this as freshwater says can be air drawn into the pump or forcing the pump to work harder than it needs to.
