Title: **DILLEMA...WHAT WOULD YOU DO? **
Post by: Easyclean Windows on October 25, 2006, 09:15:24 pm
OK i have a dilema.

I have been asked to quote for a hospice in my area that cares for the people who are dying from cancer and leukaemia.

http://www.katharinehouse.co.uk/

It is an independent sector hospice and relies largely on charitable donations for funding. A grant is received from the Health Authority. No charge is made to patients or their families for any aspect of care.

So as i have had friends and relatives who have acctually been here god bless them all i thought id do my bit for charity and tell them id do it for free.

However after a site visit its a bit more than i expected and at least 4 if not 5 days work if i do it on my own.

There are a total of  60 1st floor windows.....
6 outside seating areas each with 40 glass panels which are covered in moss and lead run.

1 hugggggggge conservatory which is absolutley baked in dirt and grime.

and they want the insides done as well as the outsides.

Some of the insides will need platforms as there are domes in the roof and cannot be done by a ladder or poles and squeegees.

And seeing all the relatives crying and upset let alone the poor souls actually in there.

So you see my dilema.......what would you guys do quote it all the same without any quarms? do it over 4 days free for charity but then not have an income ?   do it half price?

so you can see im in a pickle

ps. if any of you do say FREE please give me your details so i can ask you all to come and help me..

I would only do it mate if its still profitable, maybe do it on a sunday aswell and insides maybe early on a weekday morning or bang it all out on a sunday and have a nice drink, its better to earn something when you would be doing nothing.

Also im not with safe contractor, might be next year. You like the docs then mate, ProPole is on the ball wouldnt you say.

WHY don’t you and some of the local window cleaners club together and clean the windows for free, if you speak with the hospice tell them your thoughts and see if you both could get free advertising in the local paper, local news loves stores like this and that way the hospice gets free window cleaning and free advertising to help will donations and you get to feel good that your giving something back and free advertising for your window cleaning business, everyone is a winner.

I Know this may sound harsh but you have no freinds in business, but I hear what your saying, when I started WC nine years ago I took on a similar type of account for mentally and terminally ill children,
I took it on at the same price as there last WC at £30, and nine years later it is still £30.

A weeks work is a lot to give away, and unless you can afford to do it for free, Then I would suggest giving a price to them, I am pretty sure they don't expect a job of that size to be done for free? Give them a price and once they except your price, like already suggested say now you have excepted, you can now deduct £x as my donation to you

I know that this is a delicate situation and one that has affected my life very recently.

Truthfully, I would detach my feelings and quote for it like any other building. Yes this may seem harsh but you still have to pay bills etc.....And don't lose sight of the fact that they will have budgets set aside for cleaning etc...

If you have some free time available, then yes, do your thing for charity and clean it for free, fair play to you.

I use to work for a company that cleaned a hospice,i cleaned the inside were all the ill patients were,if the nurses were all busy i had to pull the bed away from the window, just took my time, talked to the patient while cleaning the windows,if they were on the last legs. and the family was there. i missed that room, other wise all right to clean nice and warm in winter

If it was a one-off I'd probably do it piecemeal whenever I had a spare morning or afternoon and charge them cost.

If it's to be a regular clean I think you have to charge...perhaps a reduced rate.

Who cleaned the windows before you came on the scene?

They have never been cleaned as there are so many windows that cannot be accessed by ladder.

The cleaning is a big one off for all the tops of the covered areas and conservatory and twice a year for the windows
