Title: Sulphur
Post by: Ray on October 21, 2006, 06:23:24 pm
We have client who has a conservatory, which had a vine growing in it.

They decided to cut the vine down completely and remove it.  They then used a Sulphur Candle to kill any bugs left in the room after removing all items of furniture from the conservatory.

What they didn’t do, was to seal up the doors between the conservatory and the lounge, they closed them but left them unsealed.

They set the candle off at about 5pm but when they got back at 9pm to fine the conservatory full of smoke as it should be but also the lounge.

They opened all the windows to clear the smoke.

The room now stinks of sulphur. It is not pleasant to be in the room, but it is getting better with time.

They want us to clean the sofa and carpet.

Can you foresee any problems?

Hi Ray,

You will have sulphur dioxide with possibly some hydrogen sulphide which smells like bad eggs.

There may also be some solid sulphur in the smoke.

I would clean normally but wear gloves when cleaning sofa.

Sulphur is not particulary dangerous but sulphur dioxide will produce sulphuric acid when mixed with water in, say your mouth.

Cheers

Doug
