Isn't the Pendle Stairway in Ilfracombe a great cinema?!
Is there a story as to why there's a hole in the screen patched with white gaffa tape?
-
The tape's now gone they shut it down and sold it to merlin and re-opend as the swanky embassy with the secret screen 7 woo hoo
-
Ahh. Pity.
I always went there when I was in North Devon purely for the comedy value.
Last time I went there there were only four people in the screening: Me, t'other half and two german tourists. Freezing 'cos the heating was broken! We all huddled round a calor portable gas fire to keep warm!
Mr Tuffin turned up ten minutes late to open up complete with a "Drinks-Link" bag full of tins from the off-licence up the road to drink during the film. By the end of the showing he was p*ssed.
I bought a bag of opal fruits to eat during the film and they were TWO YEARS out of date!
As I said, the screen had a hole in it patched with gaffa tape...various rows of seats had been roped off 'cos they were broken. There was a huge piece of plywood over the hole in the floor in front of the screen!
If I'm correct it was voted the worst cinema in Europe a number of years running.
Happy days, it was like stepping back in time. In a way it's a shame it's now been modernised!
-
The German tourists are the locals the place is full of them n ot that thats a bad thing ::) and you will be pleased to know the opal fruits are still out of date
-
I`ve only been here for a couple of years, any more suggestions of where to go out are welcome...I think i`ll take my missus to that cinema (really treat her)
I think i got some mouldy popcorn in the back off the cupboard that`ll spoil her.
I`m in torquay by the way... ;D
-
What about a night in faulty towers ?? ;D ;D
-
Faulty towers was based on a actual hotel and is still there, altough different owners now.
Dartmoor is good day out if you have kids (normally wears them out :D) Hey Tor granite railway is good and jays grave is good for spooking people out.

just been looking at that website, I`ve been itching to pack a tent and get lost on the moors for a few days but if its hot and sunny my misses won`t go cos of bugs and if its not hot and sunny she won`t go cos its to cold
And if i go on my own its like catching a big fish and not having anyone there to see it.
but shes coming round slowly and the pics on that site helped so it`s all good :D
-
hey nothing wrong with Ilfracombe, and we dont get many german tourists, well apart from the cruise liner that came in the summer that had quite a few on it, what a turn out that was for them, typical ilfracombe council got the times wrong, thought the boat was coming in at 2 in the avo put a brass band on for them and everything, but the boat actually came in a lot earlier.
The new embassy cinema is very good, gives the central cinema in barnstaple a run for its money.
