does anybody have an inclin what these marks could be?
Looked very much like some sort of draught marking :-\ but was very scattered in in shape , similar to crazy paving or marbling effect, was only in and around an area of 18inches or so from skirting and over an area ,aprox 8ft in lenghth .
I used eco aggitated well, some improvment, but not satisfied , gave it another go with eco little longer to dwell, again some improvment .but not perfect :( but custy happy .
so does any body have an idea what maybe be causing this, or indeed what it is?

Looks to me like a spillage, and if it's in the corner I would again take another educated guess at urine....do the clients have pets?
A ph test may help establish the cause.

No pets Tony,
a spillage of some sort perhaps! :-\ but its the pattern and the area of the markings that makes me think differently,

I have seen something similar to this in the past, but not exactly the same. This was in an area where a convector heater stood and was occasionally moved about. The upward draught of the hot air was pulling air through the carpet leaving a oblong shape (draught mark) around the perimeter of the heater base. Where it had overlapped it was very similar to your pic.

I've seen similar types of soiling at the bottom of floor length curtains, where the dust settles and is quite stubborn. The shape though is usually more curved than your picture. This is top down soiling. Inspect the full length of the yarn tufts to see if it is bottom up soiling. This would suggest draft type soiling.
Safe and happy cleaning :)

Ken,
think you might be pretty near the target with your reply, the general area was near to some patio type doors where curtains did indeed hang in this area origonaly. it was a rented property , and the owner informed me the tennants had burnt candles alot of the time.
Apperently the walls and ceiling had to be redocrated because of this.

Thats your answer Geoff, candle smoke. A big problem now on fire cleans trying to distinquish what is pre-existing and whats not.

One thing I can tell you Geoff is they are not crop circles, cus they are to square at the edges for them.
Did the client inherit this carpet when they moved into the house?
If this is the case, they could be marks left by floor mounted speaker stands from a hi-fi unit provided this is a picture of a lounge carpet. Alternatively, even a small corner unit that has been regularly polished in the past!
