Title: The cheek of some people!
Post by: clairekuccuk39 on October 02, 2006, 10:52:05 pm
Hi everyone,

Was wondering if anyone had any funny stories to tell about customers and how they do or dont pay.

Our best and funniest one has to be a well off customer of ours who recently had taken a holiday to Istanbul.  Rather than see his left over holiday money go to waste he is now paying my husband in turkish lira!  My husband is turkish if youre wondering but we live in England!

Hi Claire - do you go to visit Turkey regularly (seeing relatives or on holiday)and use it then so you dont mind being paid in Turkish currency or is your hubbie just humouring the customer??

I was once paid in Sainsbury's vouchers (before they joined the "Nectar" scheme).  I was quite happy with that as I often shop there.  He had no cash on him and it saved him from hunting for his cheque book.

Just recently, a Scottish customer of mine paid me in Scottish ten pound notes for a seventy quid gutter clean.

Why?

Because she knows I dislike Jocks (in a jokey sort of way), so she kept the 'Sweaty' money back from a recent trip to Scottland to purposely pay me with.

That's cheek!

I had a week recently where I took nearly £100 in Monopoly Scottish money off various customers.

Nothing before or since.

Must be the one acceptable week of weather to holiday there.... ;D

If the shops down south dont accept it is just because the shop assisstants are too thick to read that it says 'sterling' on it and legal tender!! Northern Irish sterling is also acceptable anywhere in the UK.
I live in oxford (although from Dublin originally) and quite often get Scottish Sterling - Never had a problem cashing or spending it here

I'd like to be paid in 'kind', but I've not had any offers!

Anyway; get back on topic!

------------------------------------------------------

When I first started I advertised a free clean to any customer who referred me to a friend.

One lady customer 'went for it' and ended up getting free cleans for about eight months.  I had to stop her in the end.

(It wasn't a good idea; but that's another topic).

Tosh...
Why wasnt it a good idea?? I was thinking of doing it myself. as long as the referral are regular cleans and not once off I thought it would be worth while!

Customer today never had enough cash to pay but didnt want to pay by cheque, so she offered me a bottle of Scotch,  ;D.

That will do very nicely. I think her husband will have the hump, i would.

yeah it really winds me up - we have 4 different banks over here who make their own notes, they're all sterling but still the thick as champ shop assistants in England (and Scotland sometimes too) look at it and stare for ages then tell you they can't take it, ggrrrrr, its funny though when they see our Northern Bank £5 notes, they're plastic!!

I'll take a piccy of one tomorrow and show you - in fact I'll take pics of a note from each bank, just so if you ever see one you'll know its LEGAL tender and know to accept it!

Danny, I think you will find that though the tongue in cheek refferal to monopoly money was aimed at the scottish note, the slagging off was purely for the the thick people behind tills in England (and Wales) that wouldn't know legal tender if it jumped up and bit them on their harris :-\

I don't think I've had anything interesting offered as way of payment in over 22 years as a window cleaner :'(

Shops down here dont take Scottish notes because of the large ammount of fakes arround, yes we get plenty of our own fake money but i know what English Sterling looks like. If i am offered Scottish money i dont take it because its a pain getting shot of it.

As for the quote above, when the World Cup was on & England had a game, Who did the avarage Scott support, THE OPPOSITION.

Before all the Scotts on here tear into me, my last name is Macdonald but i see myslf as English 100%, having said that i think racist comments & feeling in the UK are pulling us apart.

For the Non-Irish (or 'Ulsterpeople'; depending on your political viewpoint), champ is mash pototoes with spring-onions (scallions).

It's one of thier favorates, along with the 'Ulster Fry', which is also known as 'The Occupied Six Counties Fry', again, depending on what side of the divide they're on.
