Does this mean NO ONE uses Thompson?
-
do a search on it, i think you'll find a general dislike of tompson by most.
there mega crap, expect 2 jobs a year (thats a good year) even with half page ad.
-
i put in ad last year cost£1300 got 1 job £80 never again >:( >:(
-
The poll misses out using local newspapers
-
benny , you say got £80 job!!!!!!
but you dont mention who you advertised with :-\ :)
cleancare, proberbly missed local papers for a reason :D after all all locals do is attract time wasters and price seekers, but if thats your market, GO FOR IT ;)

None of the above was left out as well. The best form of getting work is by talking to the right people to get work for you., Face to face with people is far more responsive to get work than any form of paper adds. Best, Dave.
-
I agree word of mouth is by far the best, but you would have to talk to alot of people all day to keep busy.

Justin, not if you talk to the right people. Designers have endless customers to pass on to you as a cleaner. So you talk to the right person and that could mean maybe 30 or 40 customers a year. One chat so to speak to one designer, 40 jobs at, say £300, equals £12,000. Not too shabby for one conversation. Best, Dave.
-
I agree with Dave. You can't beat someone in a influencial position to act as your champian. Howver it doesn't have to be a Designer, it can be anyone who people look to in the community and comes into contact with lots of the right type of people. I did a job for a Vicar's wife because she booked a parish news ad for me. Now I get her 'endorsment' whnever CC comes up.
I suspect the problem with Designers etc is they will throw allsorts at you and stuff that may be very difficult to work on and have very high replacement costs, so you had better know your stuff.
-
Mike, you are quite correct, which is why working for designers, architects and the like isnt for everyone. But if you do know your stuff they are a very good sorce for work. Yes you work on a lot of hideously expensive textiles but then you can charge a hideous amount to work on them. Best,, Dave.

Word of mouth absolutely.
I was recently talking to a commercial gardener ( new partner of a friend ), put a good word in for me, took me on a trial basis was pleased with my work. Have done 3 residential areas to date and another 14 sites on the horizon plus more to come, all paying excellent money.
Not trying to sound big headed here, just to make people aware, tell as many people as you can about the work you do.
Nigel. :)

Word of mouth it is then. Farewell Mr B*****it Yellow pages Rep! We no longer need your aaaaaaaa's.
Cheers

YP waste of money,
and far far to expensive.
-
that 1 80 quid job was from tompson

All advertising is about getting your point over as clearly and simply as possible, i never place large expensive adds. a lot of small adds well positioned in publications with straight forward text will bring far more work than 1 large add with loads of writing.
You need to sell the sizzle not the steak.
I get reasonable response from yellow pages where my total spend is £400 p.a approx for 2 adds in the same section of 1 book
reasonable response from thomson £600.00 p.a in two books small credit card style add.
I advertise in 4 local publications at a total cost of 97.00 per month.
This all generates around 15 to 20 jobs per week, add to this my regular customers and commercial contracts and we are kept very busy, all for an advertising budget of around £2500 per year.

That sounds like a good return.
