Post by: jamse on September 18, 2006, 08:02:46 pm

Yep!

There's always a trade off.  You can do exercises, get therapy, take pills and potions...

But as long as you keep wfp-ing it will probably come back ;)

I get that sometimes.

Apparently it's because the pole is always the same thickness. Rather like if you have a parrot or similar they need different thickness perches. If that makes sense?

So I am told.

Good point Ross,
I only have the cheap Unger poles, but as you only need the sections of the poles for the height you are working at, your pole circumference changes constantly.

I still have problems with my hands though, but that goes back to my days as a decorator (long story...and you know i love long stories ;D)

Dont know about you but i think we will have less problems with our hands later using the pole than hands in & out of the bucket all the time.

Now lets not argue which is the best but i was trad over 15years & my knuckles ach bad all the time.

I use Ungers like Ian but do get achy fingers usually first thing a.m.

I do stretching exercises. Just before going to bed I "span" my hands as wide as I can ten times and do the same first thing in the morning. It seems to help but after a particularly busy day I feel it sometimes.

(I also do a fair bit of cycling so there is handlebar gripping going on too!)

No jokes please!

I hav`nt had problems with my fingers but i am suffering with pains in my forearm, elbow and wrist it usually is worse when i use my 32ft pole and then when i use my 20ft pole it is a bit of a struggle,i am in the middle of converting carbon fishing poles to cut down on the pole weight and hopefully this maybe a lot easier,Gaz

the lockiing of mussels and cramp is normaly a defiecentcy in sodium due to sweating to much need to keep up liquids in summer and i do put a little salt on breakfast now and then if i have a large days work

my hands were worse through scrim work when i was younger than now

you could always look at alex superlite poles, lighter thinner.

The medical term for your finger(s) locking up at night is 'trigger finger',  it is a common sympton associated with people who suffer from arthritus. It can also be caused through applying excessive strain on the fingers and wrists, i.e. using heavy WFPoles for prolonged periods. How do I know this; because I have chronic arthritus and have to take up to 26 tablets daily. I diet carefully, rest and relax when my body is feeling tired and exhausted instead of continuing to work and antagonising the arthritus flare ups. One major help I've found is to use the lightest, sturdiest WFPoles I can possibly use. This has made a very big difference to my health and my arthritus is showing very good signs of vastly improving. I use microbore hose to cut down on the strain on my hands and have almost given up all my WFP trolley and ladder work now. I WFP and leave the brush on the glass when rinsing instead of trying to lift the brush off. Basically, I try to make my life as simple as possible and try to pick up the biggest and easiest WFP jobs in my area that are hassle free.

When working try to relax the hands as much as possible.

Its amazing how many times you will find yourself having a very tight grip of the pole when you dont have to.

Try it make a consience effort.

Same here.
I can't say that if you stretch you will never get aches and pains, but if you don't do any stretching you will definitely gets aches and pains.
