18 ft is fine until you need to bridge over a conservatory or similar obstacle.  I started with 18 ft but found that 24 ft was more suitable for my needs so I got another 6 ft piece added.  Due to wanting a fairly rigid pole, I use a metal pole from Omnipole.  I don't find the weight to be an issue.
Of course, much will depend on the type of work that you have.

20ft is the best, it is heavier than the 18ft but is more manouverable.

My one is actually 21ft or 22ft with gooseneck and has a 5'3" base section. I have customised it to this size.

The advantage I find is that you can use it on lower windows more easily.

I prefer the 20Ft with gooseneck.

This becomes an advantage when your fully extended and need to get to the bottom of the window above a gutter or sloping roof. The gooseneck makes this alot easier to get to.

i bought a 18ft pole when i started. But i wished i had bought the 24ft straight away. you can get to some third story windows with them, especially if they are over a roof. I would definatly recommend a 22fter.

hence why we always recommend the 25ft ecolite - lighter than most 18ft poles, easier to work with, real nice pole.

Here you go Trevor

http://www.brodexbms.co.uk/poles.htm

I have 2 of the supposed 18ft ones of these. Watch out though because it says reach on the site so if the 25ft is like mine they wont actually be 25ft long. My 18ft ones are slightly less than 17ft.

Having said that my lads like the poles very much. You will probably want to change the hose they come with as well. Ours kinked like crazy on both poles so we changed it to the clear stuff on the universal poles and its much better.

oh yeah I should have mentioned the hose - it really is rubbish, change it to the standard clear hose.
