Hi Des,
I was browsing the other day and came across the corporate Service Master website.  They even have a group now that specialises in cleaning mattresses- probably in the way that you are thinking of.  Perhaps if you ring them up they'll tell you their secrets!!

Do a search on Servicmeaster (haven't got the link to hand) and you should find it.  On their home page they have links to furnture medic, green thumbs (the lawn people), Service Mster Clean etc.

Cheers

Hi

It is my understanding that there is no absolute cure-all for bugs and beasties that we, as carpet cleaners can safely do... I do believe that even the Servicemaster method has its limitations.

I have spoken to a colleague on this very subject and have asked him to do a presentation at the CARPEX 2004 show in October for us....I am currently awaiting his reply

Cheers

Only one way to stop Bed Bugs.

In the morning, open up your window nice and wide.
Pull back the quilt.
Go to work.

Bed bugs hate ventalation, they cannot survive, they like it warm and damp.

Des,

Ian is being too kind, but thanks nevertheless.

The Hygienitech system incorporates pulsating UV-C light to kill the mites, plus a vibrating vaccum for extraction. The use of light has the advantage over insecticides in that there is no associated risk of alergic reaction for the human occupants of the bed.

However, the dust mite is photophobic and will burrow within the padding to avoid daylight. this means that at start of treatment most of the mite population will be away from the surface. The penetration of the treatment light pulses is limited and I am doubtfull as to what proportion of mites would be affected.

What is good about the system is the vibrating vacuum, which will remove a significant amount of mite droppings  and exfoliated skin. Other ways of removing this include the Von Shraeder upholstery vacuum and the Victor electric brush head, the vaccum power for this can be supplied by your HWE, fitted with a dust-downer device and locate out side the building.

If we accept that without the use of a liquid nitrogen system, we are able to kill only a proportion of the mite population within a mattress, then we arive at the more practical proposition of population controll.

The dust mite does not drink, it obtains the moisture it requires to survive from its food - our exfoliated skin. When this leaves our bodies it is too dry to support the mites. What introduces the water is a micro-fungus which forms on the skin scales and absorbs and injects ambient moisture and enzymes into the skin.

By removing as much of the food sorce, dead mites and mite excrement as possible, then treating with a safe fungicide and educating the client as to simple daily airing of bedding the mite population can be kept at low level.

In this way I have been treating mattresses for years and the 'proof of the pudding' is that sufferers of asthema and allergic rhinitis often show an immediate impovement after treatment.

John.

Bed Bugs and Dust Mites are two different, albeit both revolting, creatures. From what I have read recently, these are some of their features:-

Bed Bugs are making a return to the nation’s beds and are proving extremely resistant to insecticides. Perhaps they felt aggrieved at the publicity given to dust mites, hence the aggressive come back.

Bed Bugs can be seen with the naked (or bespectacled in my case) eye. Dust Mites creep about in their unseen nastiness. I wonder if even Bed Bugs can see them.

Bed Bugs bite us. Dust Mites just happily nibble away our shedded skin. They are welcome to mine.

In some European countries it is traditional practice each morning to shake or hang the bedding out of a window to give it a good airing. That should sort some of the little beggars out.

Ian Gourlay,

I too, suffer from catarrh and an accompanying tickle cough. It drives me mad. If you ever find a cure please let me know.

Neil

After 3 operations loads of drops I have come yo the conclusion the best thing is to do nothing.

Guess what its clearer than it has ever been.

However after being brainwashed about Dust Mites

I wonder if Promite up my nose  is the answer.

Ian

Ian

Could it (the catarrh) be attributed to some of the chemicals that you are using.... maybe its not catarrh at all...
I know that certain chemicals will make my nose discharge more mucus therefore I ceased to use them .... problem solved.

Kevin
We use a HEPA vacuum cleaner to initially extract as much dust and dust mite feces as possible. After that we use dry steam to eradicate live dust mites and finish by spraying on a diluted boron powder that kills off dust mites in the long term by sealing their digestive systems. Boron is a natural element
so usually doesn't affect people with asthma or allergies. This is a system that takes time to work but has a longer benifit.
