Title: What Advertising actually works
Post by: Paul_Ashworth on August 22, 2006, 11:05:43 pm
Hi Folks,
I read many of the posts especially about advertising etc, but only have a line in the yellow pages (missed the deadline)

Have a quater page ad in the phone book costing £700.00 but am fairly near the back and am probably getting 1-2 jobs per week from this

The local paper bring in very few enquires !! :(

I get a few jobs from word of mouth etc and a few from leaflets.

But could really do with being much more busy..

Anybody any idea's

Hi,

Our work is exclusively word of mouth or from the web.

Tried leaflets when we first started, but response rate was very low.  I've heard others having the same leaflet experience, but then some get a good ratio of leaflets to jobs.

I'm actually turning away work now (never thought I'd do that) and have referrals from existing customers who are on my wait list.  This is, I must hasten to add, because I don't have the time to do the jobs myself.

I'm grappling with the thought of employing someone, but know absolutely nothing about it and don't know who best to contact.

One to two jobs a week sounds good to me for your quarter page ad.

Have you put your free listing in Yell.com?
Got your self a website?

I find a little bit of everything works best for me. IE a few leaflets,Yell, website etc also try and find free advertising on local forums etc Everyone has different experiences with advertising and you just need to find what works for you but for me id say keep it tight and stay well away from ufindus/touch local etc

Hope this helps
Regards Rob

Hi Rob,
I've not got a website, but am currently looking at it along with an 0800 no.

I've not really had anything from yell.com but have just put a few listings on local sites.

Thanks for you feedback

www.phoenixcleaning.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk.  This is my Web site and it didn't cost me anything as I did it myself from a pre-formatted setup in wanadoo/orange.

Hi Rob,
I think your Website looks excellent and you only paid £100 quid for it. Think it might be worth while.

Did the guy get you up in the search engine listings as well ?

Hi Paul,

I'm number 1 on msn and yahoo but i think my domain name really helps with that, i normally get on page three of google which is a bit more difficult! Thats assuming people put in crawley carpet cleaning or carpet cleaning crawley so to speak. He did offer to help with getting me ranked higher but i wasn't willing to spend the dollar! I would say at the moment without really pushing the site it gets me 1 to 2 inquiries a week which for a running cost of a couple of quid you cant go wrong.

Regards Rob.

Hi Whispers,

Google costs no more than msn or any other search engine unless your using ad words etc. The search engines simply find your site once its uploaded and the more links you get to it the higher you will feature. Please don't ask me to explain it all id be here all night and the beer is getting warm! Sounds like you need professional help.Good luck.

we use a bit of eveything, leaflets, local paper etc, which brings in enough to keep us busy, the only one that is a waste of money is Yell.com and they wont let you cancel. the have promised me a review after 6mths has elapsed. only have to wait 2 weeks, bet they still wont let me cancel, probably try to sell me more. no way..
