I'm thinking of starting a CC business, but at 54 I'm concerned about the physical side of the work.
I'm pretty fit ( I jog to the pub every night) ;D.
But how hard is the work?

I think I've put this in the wrong section. Sorry.

Tony, It depends what level you want to build the business to. It is very physically demanding. My dad is a similar age to you and manages ok.

I'm in my mid 40's I am down to about 2 jobs per day.
20 yrs ago I could do twice that amount. It all depends on how much money you need to make. Try it!

I have been in and out of the industry for approx 27 years, this kind of work is as easy or as hard as you want it to be. Its all about staying on top of it, once you have worked hard to get it to a great standard its all about maintenance, althought the work is very repetitive I get a great deal of satisfaction out of it, staying on top of it is the key, once you let it slip this is when it gets difficult. You need to do yourself a schedule and stick to it, listing daily, weekly, quartley tasks.

Can't believe someone in their 40s can only manage two jobs per day. My husband is desperate to get back to work, at 62, following a serious heart condition, stopping him in his tracks.
At 60 he could still do a six hour shift, cleaning hotel carpets and in his forties had no trouble handling 4 to 5 jobs per day !
Not intending to insult you, but ????????????????

Maybe that was a contributing factor to the heart condition.
-
Absolutely not, the condition appears to be genetic and is now under control but the sciatica willalways recurr, but this is easily controlled, if you know how

Im only 33 but due to a knee injury i picked up in the army i find it hard work and hope i can continue into my 40s at least!
-
Tony, your age shouldn't be a barrier to carpet cleaning as long as you are resonably fit. I have one customer who is late 50's and has an artificial knee joint and he copes ok.
What I would say is be aware that it does take a couple of years to build up a decent clientelle and in the early years you will have to do quite a bit of marketing. Of course it all depends on what level of income you require.

Whats age got to do with it. Its all to do with how you personaly feel, and how you think. Everyone is different, some people are old at 40, whereas others, much older in body, stay young in mind and attitude, and scoff at age on its own, as being a reason to slow down and take it easier. Im 60, and after 27 years a CC am working harder than ever and for leisure I am still running marathons and climbimg mountains. If you have had a background of hard manual work you should be OK but I would think twice if your background is of a more sedetary nature.
Dave.

Spot on comment.
Im 45 and as strong and fitter than most 30 year olds and that is only down to background and visiting the gym regularly to stay fit and on top of your body.
Yes this job is very physical buy I expect to be going for at least another 15 years or so at it.
