Hi all
Finished my last job today and went and put the ladders on the van, then noticed a customer had returned home while i had been cleaning down the road, so went to collect the money.
Got the money and promptly jumped in the van and set of home, after about half a mile down the road there is a big sweeping bend, after a big bang and and much noise i realised i had not tied my ladder on.
Fortunately no cars were following me right behind or any coming in the opposite direction, but by the time i had pulled over i had stopped the traffic in both directions :-[
what a plonker i felt. >:(
No harm done but learned a lesson from it not to get distracted until ladders are tied on.

You were a very lucky man. You could have killed someone.
I remember a few years ago I put the ladders on my roof rack and drove 7 miles along the dual carrigeway hitting speeds of 60 mph untill I remembered that they wern't tied on :o
I had a rack built onto the bars with ladder stops welded on. If I didn't have this I don't know what would have happened.

I started off in a little ugo triple ladders hagging off front and back went down a dual carrage way one night with only the double on hit seventy and they flew off went back to pick them up the roof was on the road ladders still tied to it
My brother had one come off on the motorway it just blew apart
its almost compulsery forwc to lose their ladders when starting out

i now use clamps which are safer (if i remember to put them on)

I did this. I had a set of wooden double 12' ladders plus a 7' set of points. I forgot to tie them on and as driving at 70mph down a fairly busy dual carriage way when I saw in my mirror the points fly off the back. Fortunately they hit the floor before they hit a car and the HGV behind me drove over them. I stopped and walked back to pick up what was left of them - several pieces. It was fortunate that it was a heavy HGV and not a car, otherwise there could have been some serious damage.

yep, when i first started i forgot to tie em down, finished doing a house and drove off, hit a pothole or two and they slid off the front hitting the wing mirror lol, luckily it was on a private lane in the countryside with no one about :D
a few weeks ago i also forgot to put my scrims in the car (5 of them) left them on the roof and drove about a mile down the dual carriageway doing about 80 mph, to my next house. got out the car and all 5 scrims were still there lol...couldnt believe it. :D

i drove about 30 miles without the ladders being tied .got to work and thought thats lucky.
my mate done the same on the a12(duel carriageway)

Did that once. I drove down a steep hill and up the other side to a roundabout. It was when I stopped that the ladders came slidding off the roof.
Good job there was no car in front but it did damage my bonnet.

me too they shot accross the road and hit a bus shelter luckily no body was around :-[

me to ! i still have beautiful non tied ladder marks on my bonnet ! on the odd occaision i ( local polish ) wash the car it stands out very clearly , and i have only myself to blame !

Yep. Guilty here too but no harm done fortunately. It slid down the side of my van on a bend and broke the door handle. Fortunately it was low speed as still on a housing estate. I suppose that's another hidden benefit of WFP as the ladder stays on most of the time.

Just a quick point on this subject.
You may or may not be aware, but if you use bungee's to secure your ladder to your vehicle and the ladders come off causing an accident, the police will report this method of securing and Insurance companies will NOT pay out!
As soon as you use your vehicle or ladders to earn a living you cross over into the business/industrial sector and therefore you should use either rope or ladder locks to secure them correctly to your vehicle.
Just thought I would mention it ;)

80 mph on the A12 fast lane overtaking a car, bang, ladders ended up on bank on opposite side lane. no one killed, poop me self, purchased ladder clamps and threw out bungee chords.

I'm wondering where my own preferred method would fall in this scenario. I won't use bugees as I don't trust them but I do use quick release straps where the strap can only pull through one way. I also use load stoppers to prevent sideways movement. The metal clamps only go on so I can lock the ladder on at night. This method has worked fine, without mishap, for many years.

I use rope myself.
Never had any problems. (as long as they're tied on!)

This communicating by text is funny stuff isn't it Trevor? The way a message is read is usually more to do with how the recipient feels at the time than how the sender meant it (though not always). I got a totally different meaning from Pirate Jack's message - like it was a term of endearment for you.

i always put the metal clamp on my drivers seat,that way you dont forget as there pretty uncomfortable to sit on.

Thats a great idea :) dont use clamps but from now on will allways make sure my rope is shut inside the drivers door 8).
