New 4040 membrane has arrows saying flow should the arrows point to the inlet side of the ro or outlet
Hard to know from the description but a simple solution is that the end with the rubber seal goes at the inlet end. No seal at the outlet.
This is the seal I mean.

Just a general suggestion.
Always try to take note of how something comes apart too make replacement easier. We usually take photographs of it.
One example is when I replace rear brake pads on our Citroen Xsara. Fitting the anti rattle springs can be a bit confusing as I don't do it 'every day'.
Years ago I had A Nissan Micra. The electric power steering packed up which meant removing half the dash board to remove it. It was away for about 10 days before I got it back. Thankfully I took dozens of photos. If I hadn't, reassembly would have taken much longer.
