The deadlfor self assessment fast approaches! So do you do like me and leave things to the last minute before you submit your return?
Mine is done done and I'm now much the poorer after giving the taxman his pound of flesh 😫
I'm reaching out to those of you that do your return online and not those of you that (very sensibly!) Use an accountant and also of those of you who are sole traders with no employees!
Im not after your turnovers but what, in general figures do you put down for your expenses?
A single total?
Detailed breakdown?
I'm interested to see if there is an average for what we write down, as a for instance, mine was over 4k but under 5k...so am I high compared to you or low?
Or does no one like to answer that question!?
Paranoia rules! Lol

Hi Ian I use the cash basis accounting(rather than accrues method) which is basically total turnover minus single total expenses. It's very easy. I did my tax return last week and it took me around an hour.My expenses for the 2023-2024 tax year were nearly 7k which is around average for me(I lease my van)...
I save £600 a month for my tax bill every month and transfer it into an easy access smart ISA with zopa(4.6% interest). It covers my tax bill with a little bit left over....
-
same as daz.... except I do a banc transfer each week of £100 on average weeks and £150 on good weeks.
if I pay to much thats ok because I am then ahead .
my expenses are also around the 7k mark , sometimes more , sometimes less.
I use quick books
Sorry for the spelling of banc ... its bank . I am welsh ;D

Cleaner planner is great for everything to do with turnover, expenses, debts, write offs, payments and of course end of year accounts so I just print it off at the end of each tax year and put it into a clear folder with all the receipts for that tax year and file it away.
Self assessment is changing soon though. We will all need to submit 3 monthly accounts through third party commercial software.(Even sole traders earning less than 50k)as part of making tax digital .I'm not sure how it all works yet I'll have to study up on it but I'm sure it won't be complicated. 👍
-
Same as above, I use quick books cash accounting. Expenses as a sole trader are usually around £8k, but last year a van purchase helped offset my tax bill by a lot! Tax return usually takes me 3-4 hours and I always do it on a frozen day in January, will be filed and tax paid towards month end. Fun times. :-X

I am no expert , but try quickbooks . it does the book keeping for you , its linked to your banc account,
I have bben using it for 2 years now so that I am ready for when things go digital

Sounds like a bit of a ballache to me as I'll have to input 2 lots of data into both cleaner planner and quickbooks and submit them every 3 months then a final declaration at the end of the tax year....🙄
Surely this is gonna create a lot more work for HMRC too?

Can't say I'm looking forward to submitting quarterly accounts!
I'm 69 in a month's time and only working because the state pension doesn't even cover the rent 😵💫 a lot of my work has wound down now, my actual business turnover is under 20k and everything business related is paid for with my barclaycard and receipts kept in the glovebox! So as things stand, my accounts are really simple and totalling up my expenses (bar a couple of things I can't use the credit card for) is very straightforward but I'll bet once if goes digital it won't be anything like that.. sigh 😢
-
Love handing over 30 percent of what i make in taxes and n.i etc. Disgusting when you think about it, third of my working life handed over to the gov.

How can it do the book keeping for me? I have to input the data from my cleaner planner records. Having my bank account linked to quickbooks can't do it because some payments from jobs are cash one month, then it might be a card payment next month and BACS another month.

Even worse when surrounded by people who have never worked for 20+ years and are incapable now and just a drain on the state/system

Hi Ian you don't have to worry yet as HMRC have not made a decision on self employed people earning less than 20k a year....
Deadlines for moving over to MTD is April 2026 for self employed who earn over 50k and April 2027 for people who earn 30-50k.👍

These dates have been shifting for the past 10 years or so. I wouldn’t worry about it just yet.

Only disgusting if you think there's no benefit to you of that money being spent.
I give you roads as an example. A functioning road network allows you to work and to earn. Someone has to pay for it so given that you use it and profit from it it seems reasonable that you should help to fund it.
And I don't believe you hand over 30% of what you earn.

It doesn’t matter how payment is made. Quickbooks is linked your bank account so picks up every payment that goes into your bank, whether it be bacs, cash, card payment etc.
Any cash received and not deposited would have to be auto input.

What's the road fund licence for then Vin? Mines nearly £400 a year!

Exactly.....this would be a pain for me....I don't deposit cash in my bank anymore as I don't need to because I don't get that much these days. I use it for filling the van up,food shopping, etc.

It's not road fund licence. It hasn't been for years.
OK, do the same for the NHS, pensions, legal system, fire service, food standards agency, etc, etc, etc, etc right down to paying for someone to write type approvals that mean you can buy a cheap, standard headlight bulb for your van and it'll fit.
You benefit from a functioning government every single day of your life. pretending otherwise and shouting that tax is a waste is a tad short-sighted.

I didn't say anything about tax being a waste but too many people expect handouts at every opportunity without having to do any work.

So in that case quickbooks will pick up payments going into my current account from non business activity(eg I recently sold a roland drum module for £980)which I'll have to omit from their software too!sounds like an absolute pain!
I'm sure they'll be other government approved software I can just input my data from cleaner planner for the whole 3 months as a single overall figure minus one single overall expense figure? If not I'll have to set up a separate bank account just for cleaning payments. Another thing what about expenses?I pay some in cash, some card? Currently I input all data into CP. Does this mean I'll have to input all my individual expenses AGAIN in quickbooks every time I pay in cash?

Nope. Next to each transaction there is a business or personal button. Personal payments are erased and not counted towards income/expenses.
Making tax digital is not being set up to make things easier for YOU Daz, it’s being set up so the government can see exactly what’s going on with sole traders accounts. It’s going to make your book keeping more difficult there’s no doubt about that.

I think you need to sit down and re evaluate what you are doing. How long do you think you will keep that up, and what will happen when you don't ?
If i was you i'd be doing one of them benefit checkers , twice... both as you are now and then what would happen if you where not working. You may be entitled to housing benefit ?
Some very quick and dirty math based on what you have said tells me you're literally working for nothing. You say under £20k, i'm gonna guess £18K, your expenses are £4k........... Tax etc on the remaining £14k would be 25% so you pay £3.5k tax ? Leaving you with, what.... £11K.. £211 a week ?
Pension credit and housing benefit MAY top that up for you if you aint working. I dunno, maybe you feel fine and can keep that up, but either way you'll have to address that sooner probably rather than later.
If i was 69 i certainley wouldn't be worrying about submitting quartlerly accounts thats for sure ;D

You don't need to over complicate things. All businesses are different with different requirements. Think about hairdressers and retail stores.
Most software is aimed at VAT registered companies ATM. More will come over the next couple of years including simple free bridging software rather than book keeping software. So all depends on how you keep your records which way you go.

It will make it more difficult if you're faffing about with a business or personal button alright. Daz is right. I use Aworka, i assume its similar. It will show me what i took/earned and what i spent. It couldn't be any easier.

Thanks Danny. I've got over 2 years to get my head around it. It'll probably be fairly simple once I'm familiar with it and get used to inputting extra data which if I do it at the end of each working day shouldn't take too long. They might make it easier for certain businesses like cash basis accounting is for me at present.

Making tax digital is not being set up to make things easier for YOU Daz, it’s being set up so the government can see exactly what’s going on with sole traders accounts. It’s going to make your book keeping more difficult there’s no doubt about that.
I can see the better round planning software providers making the software compatible with MTD eventually anyway, once the government actually confirms exactly what and when it’s going to start.

I am no expert , but try quickbooks . it does the book keeping for you , its linked to your banc account,
I have bben using it for 2 years now so that I am ready for when things go digital
How can it do the book keeping for me? I have to input the data from my cleaner planner records. Having my bank account linked to quickbooks can't do it because some payments from jobs are cash one month, then it might be a card payment next month and BACS another month.
It doesn’t matter how payment is made. Quickbooks is linked your bank account so picks up every payment that goes into your bank, whether it be bacs, cash, card payment etc.
Any cash received and not deposited would have to be auto input.

It will make it more difficult if you're faffing about with a business or personal button alright. Daz is right. I use Aworka, i assume its similar. It will show me what i took/earned and what i spent. It couldn't be any easier.
Keep up Clean. We were discussing software that is MTD recognised, which Aworka isn’t (yet) so you’ll have to get ‘faffing’.

Not yet i won't. And probably the only reason many softwares are not MTD 'recognised' yet is that the Gov havn't sought out how to extract a licence fee from them for the API (yet) .

Love handing over 30 percent of what i make in taxes and n.i etc. Disgusting when you think about it, third of my working life handed over to the gov.
Even worse when surrounded by people who have never worked for 20+ years and are incapable now and just a drain on the state/system
None of your problems are because of someone on benefits.

I do my accounts on sage. I assume that's good enough.
Sole traders will be filling in a form/spreadsheet once a quarter.

Yea the free or cheap bridging software is just a spreadsheet to upload figures once a quarter.

What's the road fund licence for then Vin? Mines nearly £400 a year!
Vin
I understand there is a need for taxes but it just seems the average working man is the one who keeps the country running whilst the bottom feeders and those above enjoy the fruits of his hard labour....
But its a good point to be fair there probably lots of benefits we get from taxes we take for granted
A good example is my wife is Nigerian by birth, they dont pay income tax there, theres no rules around employing you can pay cash in hand and dont have to declare income. You can literally buy a piece of land an build a house brick by brick, no planning permission you can do what you want pretty much with a lot of things.
The flipside to that is most the country live in poverty or close to it, theres lots of crimes that go unpunished because they dont have the police force to deal with it. You pay for all your healthcare (or insurance) and if you cant afford it which most cant its tough you`ll die. Most of her family cant read or write the education system is poor.
When you weigh it up i would probably rather live in a civilsed society here with rules and taxes in a somewhat guaranteed level of comfort no matter your income rather than there where it is literally every man for themself so to speak.

There's millions of people who are just a drain on the system in this country. This is what I have issue with. Plenty of working age people just don't ever want to work and contribute. They have never had a work ethic...

Good post this.

There's people who earn way more than you and contribute naff all.
If you were to count to one million it'd take you about 10-11 days. If you wanted to count to a billion you'd be in your 80s before you finished.

Nobody needs a billion.
Greed is far worse than laziness.

Bring back national service and beat all chavs with a stick. I'm hoping Farage becomes prime minister one day.
Did you hear about the Jamaican who raped a woman in this country? Served his time in prison but told the powers that be he's bi-sexual so he can't go back to Jamaica and has got to stay here because he'll be persecuted back home. This is what we're up against. We've gone soft.

Yep, and it’s only getting worse. Immigrants hanging around our local secondary schools. Teachers told to keep an eye out. (My sister is a teacher). The police are in contact with schools about it. As well as county line drugs gangs.
Nothing, absolutely nothing good comes from illegal, fighting age men of a very different and evil, yes evil, culture, coming over and sitting about in hotels with no skills or want to integrate.
Legal immigration with a points based system is the best, how Australia did it.
Our country has had it, we’ve let in far too many already. It’s a downward spiral.
I should add, it’s not tolerant to allow men we have no idea of, or who they are etc to wander into our nation illegally. it’s intolerant, intolerant of our own people, woman and young girls who get followed and harassed by men who treat woman like dirt in their home lands.
We’ve got enough bad eggs as it is. Without importing more.
For the record, I am an uncle to a mixed race niece. Racism has absolutely nothing to do with it. It’s culture. It’s integration. It’s not allowing illegal people to just sail across and help themselves. It’s national security. It’s protecting our daughters and woman.

Is your niece "fighting age"?
I ask because I've never, not once, heard the phrase "fighting age" used to describe anybody but brown-skinned asylum seekers.

The good thing about immigration here is a lot more younger people who live near me now are polite, working people. Most are Muslims. There's even a mosque now on the corner of my road. They don't drink or do drugs either so it's quieter and more peaceful round here.
It's the British that seem to be causing all the trouble,on benefits, drug dealing, shootings and stabbings, vandalism and general antisocial behaviour.
Anyway back on topic......have you all done your tax returns and paid your tax now? Only 12 days left. You don't want £100 penalty......🙄

You won’t be saying that when they start to quite literally take over the country daz, that is one of their objectives.
Read the Quran then make your mind up, they hate our way of life. That’s a fact.
Rather you than me!

They certainly won't be taking over the UK.Your just being hysterical. I like the fact they don't drink alcohol and most are very polite and hardworking.
I wish they would ban alcohol altogether in this country but that'll never happen unfortunately.

This is what i can't get my head around. Labour said we will kickstart the economy and make sure everyone has a job. And then people voted for them. Who actually wants a job ? Given the choice i'd rather not have one.
