I worked today. Immersion assisted enormously. First job was a commercial with an hour's trad doing insides but out wfp'ing by 9.30.
Probably start wfp at 9.30 tomorrow too.
-
We had an extra day off because we're lazy jocks.
Back to work today. -5 and 6in of snow.
Fabulous.
-
I do a day of commercial on 30/12, then have done a school this morning. Back to it fully from Monday. Temps were -2° overnight but it started raining at 7am and warmed up nicely ready for a 8:30am start. Days are getting longer, soon be spring 😀

Has the TARDIS got WFP then?

*Did a day of commercial on 30th December 😀

The weather is strange here. It was -4 at 5am this morning and then 2c a few hours later. I put an oil filled radiator in the back of my van to be on the safe side.
Just been doing my normal friday errands/jobs today. Food shop done and washing/housework done. Just finished my tax return too. Only took an hour. Gonna clean my own windows now and clean the neighbours too. The new neighbours are fantastic. They even came round on xmas eve with a card and bottle of Baileys! Which my missus has already drunk!Typical! Now I'm moving soon!😄👍
-
About 2c today, the same tomorrow and then 12c on Sunday. Next week looks perishing though!
-
I worked yesterday, dont know why really just felt like it. Had today off, will start back properly on monday.
-
Generally I don't mind the cold mornings now that I have an immersion heater set up on an additional tank that lasts me a few hours. Stops everything else freezing up in my truck overnight too.
Freezing up north at least generally means clear sky's and far less chance of rain. 👍

Melting snow off a roof I was cleaning this afternoon....thank God for my hot water system!🔥😄

Nice view over the Pennines though.....👍❄️
-
Well above freezing down here in Bristol. No snow like you lot up north.
-
I was in two minds whether to start back on on the 2nd and 3rd. I took the plunge and got my motivation boots on and got stuck in for both days. I'm glad I did, as this week looks worse by the looks of things. So won't feel guilty about taking the coldest day off this week. 😂
-
Bit of a nightmare up here. Don't think the weather forecasters know what's going on because they said it would be 1 or maybe 2 degrees below and it ended up minus 9 last Thursday morning. I'm taking the week off as I have inside work to do but next week I will be busy and have called my nephew to give me a hand. Hot water is handy for cleaning the windscreen before I set off.
-
I would be very cautious putting hot water on a frozen windscreen.

-9? Where are you based in Scotland? Worst we’ve had here is -3.
-
-12 is the coldest I've seen so far.
Fun times.
-
Cold here too ;D

Even I've had to admit defeat this week. I've written the whole week off as its forecast minus temperatures for the next 3 nights and there's a lot of lying snow and water lying around here.
I struggled to get out of my close this morning and the side roads are a nightmare. It's just not worth crashing the van or getting stuck down a side road.
It's going to be very dangerous the next few mornings as it's forecast-6 overnight so all the water and impacted snow will freeze solid!

No problem here 3 miles away and with a cold system Daz ;D
Plenty of snow about but the A roads are fine and I’m on commercial all this week so no battling through residential areas.
Temps are looking unworkable Thurs/Fri though so it’ll be tax return, website tidy up etc.
-
Moved in with the burd and already gone soft.
I remember when you sat in cold baked beans, I bet they’re warmed for you now. 😀
-
Going to be tough on Thursday and Friday this week. I bet none of us will be working 😂

Nope.....not moved in yet! Looks like Feb or March now!👍😄

How are your vans in the snow with a full tank lads? Mines terrible! I've had new tyres put on the front too just before xmas. (Albeit summer tyres.)Hardly any grip and I was sliding about all over the place this morning even with careful driving.....its just not worth crashing the van or getting stuck down a side road. Most of my work is in the leafy suburbs/semi rural....
If we had weather like this for months at a time every year I'd invest in winter tyres and probably drive a 4 wheel drive.
-
I've noticed my Cupra Formentor (small SUV)is much better in the snow, good grip and feels much safer driving in this arctic weather but obviously I'm not carrying half a ton of water in the back!

Just stay home Daz and relax. You already said it..... It's not worth the risk, it'll all be over by next week at the latest most probably.👍

I won't be staying at home all day mate. I've had 2 weeks off over xmas and I'm just about done with sitting around eating left over chocolates and mince pies....😆
A few afternoon gym sessions and daily long walks with the dog is on the cards. I'll get my haircut tomorrow and book my van in for it's MOT. Also a few drumming sessions in the evenings to keep me physically active.....
Looks like it's gonna thaw out Sunday going into monday morning.👍

Weathers pretty mild down here tbh. I know it's a bit of a cliche, but I really have had a "record week". Started back last Friday, worked Saturday, because I just fancied it, Monday & Tuesday and got shed loads of commercial work done.
Got an unusual job to do in Bristol Cathedral on Friday afternoon. A surveyor has got his drone stuck on a beam 50ft up and the facility department of the Diocese has asked me to knock it off with my 60 ft pole.
-
Just checked my oil filled radiator and it's not working! I've had it at least 10 years so it doesnt owe me anything. Luckily I've got another one which is bigger and better so ive just put that on in the back of my van overnight.
Don't get caught out lads!

He doesn't want to wake his girlfriends neighbours up with the sound of his window cleaning van in the early hours. ;D

It's hard going, I did a full day Monday but I probably shouldn't have in the snow if I had any sanity I was sliding about and struggling on some side streets. Yesterday wasn't as bad.
Looks like it's getting worse though minus 1 this morning tomorrow forecast minus 3 and barely getting to zero.
Only just managing to get off my driveway with a run up ;D
I'll persevere though today and tomorrow get something done at least.
It has tickled me daz that the hot water boys can't cope when little old cold man is out risking his neck and getting stuff done :P

It's the risk of crashing the van, getting stuck down a side road or slipping and falling and breaking a bone that's stopping me working. It's dangerous out there and simply not worth the risk. There is a few inches of compacted ice and snow that's frozen solid overnight here. I'll lose out on around £800 not working Tues,Wed,Thurs so it's no big deal. It could be a lot worse if I crashed or broke a bone.
Be careful out there chaps!
-
Tax bill paid and 2 x 10 day holidays to Lanzarote paid off now for May and September and plenty of money in the bank so no need to work but I like to work and get back into a regular routine after xmas.
Oh well I'm off to take the dog out, haircut then gym this afternoon.😎👍

Would it be worth the northern lads signing up with an employment agency and get temporary work in local factory or mine while the weather prevents you from cleaning windows?

It's amazing how you manage to stretch 1K a week Daz, fair play to you. :)
But at least your tax bill will be low as for a sole trader you don't earn that much.

Sod that! If you are not earning enough money window cleaning to pay for the <5 days per year on average that ice stops play, you are doing something seriously wrong.
I managed 2 full days Mon Tues, will get a half day in today then call it for the week if the forecast is correct. No biggy, tax return, a few tweaks on the website, a few jobs round the house etc ready to start back Monday.

Ive still just paid over £12k on 2 holidays and my tax/NI bill but I've got a savings account that's maturing in a couple of weeks and plenty of money in my ISA so no financial problems but it wasn't always like this.
I spent many years in my 20s and early 30s living hand to mouth or in debt but finally turned things around in my 40s.

Expensive time of year for me, 5 kids Christmas presents. 2 of their birthdays and r lasses birthday in the last 2 week lol.
Not working next Monday as got to go to London.
Unfortunately I'm not as rich as some on here as although I earn a decent amount i most of it gets spent on bills and kids. Not that I can't afford to take another week off on top of the 2 I've just lost but I'd rather not if it can be helped.
-
I was driving to some commercial jobs down the M62 yesterday when a lump of ice the size of a brick smashed in to the windscreen.
Not sure where it came from but I think it was either from the top of a lorry or an overhead gantry.
Not injured thankfully but cost me £164 excess for a new windscreen 😞

Windscreen excess is usually £75.Yours seems expensive. Is it a large van?
Lots of grit on the road and I've had a few stone chips smash into the windscreen on my car the last few days but luckily no damage.

I vowed never to have kids when I seen how miserable it made my dad having 3 sons and having to work long hours in a job he hated.

You've missed out on one of life's greatest privileges then Daz! Nothing, and I mean nothing can give you the kind of joy, feelings, love and fulfilment that being a good parent does! The struggles are part of the amazing journey, nothing can compare to what you get from, caring, loving, nurturing and providing for your own family. I would happily choose to be potless and jump at the chance to do it all again. Money doesn't even come into it, no holiday, car, hobby etc will ever come close to what having a child provides you with!

Ive never wanted kids mate....ever....Im happy with my missus and dog.Although I might be a step grandad one day so still time yet in my later years.
I've been a stepdad to a few kids over the years and enjoyed some of that time. My current stepdaughter is 25 now and stepson is 32. Glad their grown up now and so is my missus!🙂👍

Nope. Tax bill isn't massive as I'm still in the 20% bracket and only work part time these days. As for my 2 holidays I like to pay them off in full so by the time I go on them it feels like I've got them for free. I also save up specifically for these holidays in a 7% interest account that matures in January every year which pays a big chunk of them off....
I like to be ahead of all my financial commitments and affairs. It gives me peace of mind.

From the numbers you quote on here Daz, you must turnover £50k with a self employed profit of £45k. Tax and NI liability on that would be close to £10k. I’d love to know how you get 2x 5 star holidays and also pay your tax bill with £12k ???

Nope....tax/insurance was just over 6k and my holidays were £2600 and £3200 respectively for me and the missus.turnover for last tax year was down to just over 42k as I only work part time now and have at least 6 weeks off a year.Expenses were just over 7k.🙂👍

I imagine you’d have a rather large tax bill given your record earnings, wouldn’t it be better to keep the money in the bank for as long as possible to get the interest on it?
Fair play if that works for you Daz. My life expenses, whilst still quite low compared to the southern lads, are still higher than yours. No way I’d be able to have the lifestyle and holidays I do if I was turning over just £42k. Horses for courses I suppose.
-
I do about 45k. Only do 20 to 25 hours a week on the glass though...
It's funny how money works.
Probably have about a grand a month disposable income. To some people that's poverty but I remember for a good period of of about 10 years when I had less than 200 quid a month disposable and guess what we still made it work with cheap caravan holidays and budgeting. Still had a car, clothes, days out etc you just get more thrifty.

It's easy to over spend during the haydays of life. Some earn well but spend everything to keep up with Joneses
Don't forget to save for your future, pensions are critical these days to survive.
-
I'm lucky because my rent is only £91 a week,I don't drink or smoke anymore,no kids and my missus has her own business too. No way would I be able to lease a new car every 3 years if I was paying private rent as it would get swallowed up in rent. I also save regularly too in my instant access ISA and various other high interest accounts for tax/NI,holidays,emergency fund, etc
When I move in with the missus I'll be no better off. It'll be about the same as I am now living on my own but my missus will be better off financially because I'll be helping with the mortgage and bills.
My missus has spent a lot on the house over the last 10 years, new driveway, fencing, large summer house, new shed, lots of painting and decorating, plastering, new furniture, etc, etc.
She feathers the nest and I pay for the holidays and do most of the cooking. She ll be mortgage free in a few years so we will both have lower outgoings.
Health permitting I can see us both working in some capacity (albeit
part time)well into our 60s and 70s...

I was very reckless in my youth and thought I would die before reaching 30.I know of quite a few friends that have already died in their late 30s/mid forties so I count myself lucky I'm still here.
I'm 53 now and simply refuse to invest in any pension schemes. All I have is my state pension, savings and my part time business.
I'll take my chances,go on the holidays now while I'm in good health and if I live to be an old man who can't work anymore ill live a lot more frugally because I'll be old!😆

Before the shambles that was Mary Elizabeth Truss I'd have said you were an eejit for having that stance.
My pension which I have now been paying into for over half my life, lost around 30% of it's value in the space of a few hours and has not recovered so, fair enough.

Maybe worth changing your pension pots over. Pensions go up and down, but over time it should give you and average growth of 7 to 10% a year. 12%, 15%, -8%, 1%,15% is and example of a 5 year plan. Make sure your inventing in global market portfolio EFT pots. That will protect you if a single market collapses.

The irony is I know quite a few people who were very sensible in regards to pensions all their working lives only to be swept away by a malignant tumour or other terminal illness just after retirement.
Also some of my family members were worse off in retirement because they had small private pensions that took them over the threshold for certain benefits like pension credit so in fact they would be better off without the private pension altogether.
The amount of money you need to put in a pension is eye wateringly high to get even a very small amount each week.
It's too late for me now but with my 53 year old head on I would of started as soon as I started work at 16.....
The trouble is no one knows how long each of us is going to live!

I wouldn't go as far as to call truss a malignant tumour. She's just a neep.

Yeah but remember when we were trad, we were skint daz.
If I was earning what I earn now at 18-20 years old, I’d have been saving huge amounts.
It’s never too late, I’ve been saving into an investment account for a couple of years.

Forget buying an annuity, they are ridiculous poor value. Best to just place your pension pot into drawdown, so it covers, let's say 15 years for example to top up your pension.
-
Same as Jester, I don’t pay into a pension but I invest heavily into the stock market, by way of ETF’s within an ISA. +44% in a little over 2 years, beats the poxy 4-6% you get in savings accounts or cash ISA’s.
This will be my pension. With compound interest this should be worth many hundreds of thousands of pounds in 20 years and will be completely tax free income.

Couldn't believe my ears today, Liz Truss threatening pm with legal action if he doesn't stop saying she crashed the economy as its damaging her reputation!!!!!!!!!!!. ;D

Madness.

If the worldwide stock market goes into serious meltdown for an extended period we are all likely to be stuffed anyway.
The markets did recover in time after the Depession of the 1930s

And that's the reason why you need to invest in the Global Caped Market. If that collapses as said above, were all doomed.

And before too long all of us pension or no pension, rich or poor will be dead anyway so it's all a load of bo#locks in the end .

Looks like -15 here for the next two days then +11 on Monday.
Madness.
-7 here at present and forecast -10 overnight. My van is toasty though due to a new, larger oil filled radiator.
A lot of lying snow and ice on pavements and side roads so not workable until monday or tuesday depending on when it properly thaws.
Nipped to my mums this afternoon and dug out a path to her front door and put some grit down as she's due home from Spain tomorrow. Hopefully her flight won't get cancelled.
-
Been workable all week daz, full week done...dodgy on the roads with a fair bit of abs and traction control employed but never close to being stuck. Hard work until about 11am today with water freezing on the glass, hot water would have helped speed things up but managed anyway.

-5° out currently and not set to rise until after midday. Day off for me. Lost 3 days this week which is the most of lost in any year since 2010, How’s everyone else in the cold North doing?
-
Worked Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I also worked last Thursday and Friday after New Years Day, so not too bad for me, having had a relaxing day yesterday and again today. Not even worth trying, even with hot.
-
We've worked every day so far and will be out today.
Not been getting lots done but got all the commercials out of the way, ready to hit the ground running on residentials on Monday.
Wonderful start to 2025 ::)roll
-
We've worked every day this week but taking today off as its not going to get above 0 all day apparently. Next week looks great!
-
Still -6 here! Just getting ready to defrost my car to do a food shop then long walk with the dog this afternoon....
Looks like the weather could stay cold enough to stop the ice and snow from melting until monday or tuesday next week according to the forecast

You don't live there do you Dazmond? Looks well dodgy.
-
Worked 4 days this week.
-5 the coldest, 0 degrees the warmest.
It’s not been fun, and I haven’t got the full weeks work done, but the grippa hot water system has paid for itself again. 🔥
-
What area do you live in now Daz? That looks a tad run down to say the least!

Boarded up flat across the street 🙈 Is that the local drug dealer Daz? I bet you can’t wait to move over this way, out of the Manchester area.

It's fine. I've lived here for 25 years....the boarded up flat across the road has been like that for a year now .the crackhead who used to live there is in a secure mental hospital for his own and the publics safety. The smackhead who lived next door to me died of an overdose at 47 years of age a few months ago so it's nice and quiet round here now!🙂👍

I used to work with his dad many years ago when I had a proper job. He disowned his son a long time ago. He was a crackhead. He used to be smoking it 24/7. He looked worse than a homeless person and his flat was a total mess....he's finally been locked up in a mental hospital......very sad really...

Worked every day this week here, the immersion heater has come in handy! Today has been the coldest day, -4 at 8:30 and -1 when I finished at 12:00

im not offended by the term crack head..... but behind these addicts is a story. often very sad .
my daughter got into bad company at the age of 14..... around the time me and her mother seperated.
it started with alcohol and weed and progressed to coke . then in 2022 at the age of 22 she did crack and within months was in serious trouble .
I am talking about deaths door trouble .
in october 2022 she asked for help... but there is no help unless you are very lucky or in a good post code....
She agreed to go into private rehab, so I found a place for her and managed to get her in .....
this cost £7000 a month.
but it broke the cycle ....
she has relapsed many times since , but the rehab gave her the tools , and the belief that if she keeps on trying she can get well .
she is doing ok now .
what a horrendous thing to go through....

It must also have been incredibly stressful for you, i think you feel your kids problems more than your own in life.

Totally agree. My son is off to Australia in a week for a year. We wouldn't mind following his phone just in case anything happens to him. No such luck, he knows best. Guess we have to sit here and pray.

yes ... how foolish of us... we never thought of going to a doctor, or a mental health team.
her probation officer .
we didnt try every avenue possible over the years..... we didnt spend hours researching, and we didnt spend years trying everything we could . we never thought of trying to get her sectioned
we just blindly decided to pay privately.
sorry daz , but you have just shown how little you know.....
of course..... a person needs to want to change.....but there is not much help out there for someone who is at that level of addiction.
-
and actualy dazmond, we did find a free rehab, but they didn,t have a room for 3 months ......at that point , she wouldnt have lived 3 months , she was 6 stone , and couldnt keep her food down.
-
There's a place opening up near me called phoenix futures. It's for drying out etc, not sure if it's free or not but by the looks of it, it'll be expensive.
There was quite the kerfuffle, meetings in the village hall watch all the nimbys kicking up a fuss.
Thankfully it's gone ahead, they couldn't block the planning due to there being no change of use - it was previously an old folks home.

How little you know about me....I've worked with alcoholics and drug addicts for many years and ran an AA meeting in Warrington town centre for 8 years.Maybe it's regional but there is lots of help from sober and clean alcoholics and addicts all across the North west. There's literally hundreds of meetings every week and it's all free help. I do understand you can't help people who don't want to be helped but the help is there.....
I could never afford rehab because I was skint but you can get home detox and medication off the doctor which is what I did...
AA is a fantastic organisation and it saved my life
-
Anyway...
-13 here last night. Still saying+11 on Monday.
Fingers crossed eh lads.

Just because something works for you Daz does not mean it will work for everyone.
Also people can have very different circumstances, mental health issues, physical issues, triggers etc.
As with many things the type of help available can be a postcode lottery/area dependent. Often the kind of help available on the NHS for mental health issues might be available but in my experience is inadequate/doesn't work

I think it looks like Tuesday here. There's too much compacted ice and snow around for it to thaw enough to make the side roads driveable in my van. I'll make a decision tomorrow evening. Looks like 3c tomorrow and 8c on Monday.

I wish you and your family well.

thank you tony
much appreciated.
the long term goal for my daughter is to continue to get better, and one day help others in the same situation.
dazmond contributes some gems to this forum , but sometimes needs to think first before speaking . everyones situation is unique .
my response may have been a little cross , but thats because we tried and exhausted every avenue
she now does NA and AA Meetings that daz referred to .
but she needed to be physically monitored 24 /7 to detox and break the cycle .
the drugs used to sedate her during the detox are great for home detox , but unfortunately she was addicted to those drugs also , so home detox was out of the question.
-
Well done James for doing your best for your daughter, sounds like things are going in the right direction.
The most important thing in life IMO is not what happens to you but how you deal with it.
-
Hats off to you James for sharing your story. You should be very proud of your daughter’s determination to get her life back on track. It will no doubt be a difficult journey, full of ups and downs, but with your love and support it is a journey you can conquer together, best wishes to both of you.

There's loads of help out there and it's free too but most don't want it...
yes ... how foolish of us... we never thought of going to a doctor, or a mental health team.
her probation officer .
we didnt try every avenue possible over the years..... we didnt spend hours researching, and we didnt spend years trying everything we could . we never thought of trying to get her sectioned
we just blindly decided to pay privately.
sorry daz , but you have just shown how little you know.....
of course..... a person needs to want to change.....but there is not much help out there for someone who is at that level of addiction.
AA is a fantastic organisation and it saved my life
I remember not so long ago you bad mouthing AA. Saying you’d never go back to it.

im not offended by the term crack head..... but behind these addicts is a story. often very sad .
my daughter got into bad company at the age of 14..... around the time me and her mother seperated.
it started with alcohol and weed and progressed to coke . then in 2022 at the age of 22 she did crack and within months was in serious trouble .

Thank you for such an honest post. Bearing your experience must have been tough to share..
I wish you and your family well.
I wouldn’t have expected anything different from Dazmond.
Tony
thank you tony
much appreciated.
the long term goal for my daughter is to continue to get better, and one day help others in the same situation.
dazmond contributes some gems to this forum , but sometimes needs to think first before speaking . everyones situation is unique .
my response may have been a little cross , but thats because we tried and exhausted every avenue
she now does NA and AA Meetings that daz referred to .
but she needed to be physically monitored 24 /7 to detox and break the cycle .
the drugs used to sedate her during the detox are great for home detox , but unfortunately she was addicted to those drugs also , so home detox was out of the question.
Nice one James. Glad she’s found recovery in the rooms of AA/NA. It’s always there once rehab ends.
There is also help for families and friends of alcoholics, I’m sure you know about it, Al-Anon.
Best of luck with it all.

Another day off tomorrow. Go back tuesday. Most of the snow and ice should have melted by then and I can get back to a normal work routine. I've not had this much time off since I torn my ankle ligaments around 14 years ago!
Raring to go now!👍😎

Why would you need to take Monday off? Lows of 2° and highs of 6°, perfect working temperatures. Pretty much all of the side roads are clear and the main roads have been fine throughout.

Makes no difference as I've just moved all my work forward a week so only working 3 days this week(I worked last Monday). It might be clear your end but there's still a fair bit of ice left round here so I'll just leave it until tomorrow.

It depends on what its like where you live and work its still bad here but we are 1000ft above sea level.
The ice is melting but still very dodgy so we will be back at it Tuesday :)

It's even worse than the last few days Danny! The ice and snow that's left has frozen solid. I had to be very careful walking the dog this morning. Most of it will be gone by tomorrow morning thank God!👍🙂
-
Van booked in local garage for MOT Friday morning which is perfect for me....👍
Be careful out there lads! Still plenty of compacted ice around!
I'm off to the gym this afternoon.... 💪

Just stayed overnight near airport, hounslow i think its classed as
went for a walk to shop and it was like walking through the gaza strip. Put it this way i zipped my wallet and phone up in my inside pocket and put my hood up to appear a big more local. Im not suggesting all of london is that bad but i couldnt wait to get out of there.

Most places round Heathrow are a dump and put you on high alert for your security.

Well, it may have warmed up abit, which is very welcome, but one of the other reasons i dislike working in winter is very evident this week. I leave the house looking pristine, and come home looking like ive been in a mud slinging contest. Roads and pavements are minging. Waste of time cleaning the van, absolutely filthy by the end of the day, hose covered in all sorts which manages to transfer itself to boots and trousers and coat. Having to wipe gloves after each clean... etc... you can keep winter, thank god we're now over half way through it.

Same here but I trod in a load of cat crap today. Rubbed my boot on anything I could find before I got back in my van 😂
