Hi guys, looking for a little help with this one. I’ve had an enquiry for gutter cleaning, regular window cleaning, and conservatory roof clean at a property. She’s responded to one of my cards. The issue is that contact has been through email, and she’s accepted my quote and wants me to go ahead, but I’ve never met her. I’m worried about getting paid, so I’m not doing it until payment is guaranteed. Should I ask for payment up front? The house is more than a little unkempt, so my gut feeling is that this could be a bit risky. Do any of you guys in this situation ask for payment up front. Tia….

Absolutely - if we are dealing with landlords (remote) we always take payment up front - nothing wrong with that

If she doesn't pay, just take goods to the value of your invoice, or ask for her car keys as a deposit

I would turn up with my card machine at the ready and treat is as a 1off, I never accept online payments for new customers or non-regulars asking for gutter/facia cleans ect.
It has to be cash or card payment only and I make it very clear to them before I start the job.

I’ve had this before. You’ve picked up a few clues that it might go bad. I would explain that due to some previous problems ( which is true that most of us have at some time been scammed ) that your going to have to ask for cash or card on the first visit

Thanks guys. I got stung earlier this year, and my instinct was telling me not to do it! Thankfully it was only a small first clean. This feels the same, but I’ve had this feeling before and it’s turned out to be a good customer. Thanks for the feedback. I won’t be doing it without getting paid up front!!
