Title: Fair weather window cleaners.....
Post by: dazmond on April 11, 2023, 06:48:59 pm
So what do you do when we have weeks where it rains most days?

Apparently march was the wettest march since 1984 here in the North West....

I'd be at least 2 weeks behind if I hadn't  worked in some pretty horrible weather before and after my holiday(I don't work weekends or try and cram too much work into one day)not to mention the loss of at least a grand in income....

Just take a slight financial hit. It’s no big deal. I’m not hand to mouth & don’t work weekends to make up for it either. Most customers really aren’t bothered if you’re a bit late & if they are then they’re not for me. The weather all evens out in the end. At least it has in my 31 years window cleaning.

Does it though?Once that weeks lost to bad weather you never catch up....over the course of a year it could be 2k-3k a year or more down in earnings....I already take at least 4 weeks off for holidays/xmas,etc

Just the way it is m8. I’ve never worried about it. I’m not obsessed with keeping up to date. I’ll be there when I’ll be there. They can take it or leave it. I’m 50 next year. There’s more to life.

I’m guessing it would only be a problem if you’re stacked with work.
I only work a 4 day week 8.30 - 3.00 so there’s always plenty of time to get caught up for days lost to wet weather. I don’t lose any income by not working in the rain, if I am a day or two late on a 4 weekly cycle, I just clean it a day or two  early the following cycle.

I employ one person but we don’t work in the rain. One man per van. We dodge showers & I may send him out to clean some fsg’s or insides if we have any. I save these for the rainy days as it helps cushion the financial hit. It’s very rare it rains all day though. I rarely clean fsg’s or insides myself. I can’t stand them even if some are well paid. I just go home if the weather’s that bad. Sometimes I’ll let him go early. It’s no fun & not good for his morale cleaning fsg’s all day in the rain, even with waterproofs.

Some people just don’t see the bigger picture. The good days far outweigh the bad.

I’m in the south west by the way.

Here in Yorkshire it's raining almost every week. Of course you don't mind the odd day but as wet as March has been I can't just give him a day off every week.

That's said he's leaving next week so I'll be back on my own again  stress free  ;D can't be bothered replacing him.

You seem to have a bit of an obsession with what other people do when it’s raining Daz  ;D

I work in the rain most of the time, I can’t say i’m in the least bit bothered if other people do or not though.  ???

Most people have a life Daz😁 Have kids, grandkids, wives, property and gardens to look after and maintain. These people will mostly value time above money and thus view these days as a blessing. Get some more hobbies or take on some real world adult responsibilities outside your own wee bubble and you might, just might 'get it'!😄

Yes haha.

Starting his own business, a round has come up for sale and he's going to buy it

Long story which I won't go into but he's not local to my area....

He was always going to go his own way we discussed this from day one but the plan was to find a replacement when he did but I think I've realised I'm not cut out for employing i don't like the burden. Feel relieved to be honest.

I mean I could look for someone else and carry on but honestly I can't be bothered.

I rather work in rain and having a sunny day off.

I like to have days off that I choose. If I'm forced to have a day off due to weather then I'll be pacing about the house cursing it.

Annual rainfall in Manchester 1047 mm, annual rainfall here in the east, say Cambridge 559mm.  You get twice as much rain Daz, its just not that much of a problem this side of the country. The downside of that is that joe public arn't as understanding as in your neck of the woods, working in the rain it really doesn't go down well. I usually have a list of "wet day jobs, ie facias although that's slowed down a lot im guessing because of the economic situation. I have to say though, that as a result of doing them in the rain ,ive come to hate doing them. I really wouldnt want to feel that way about windows and im sure that if i did do bread and butter window cleaning in the rain, i would soon learn to hate that too. Your welcome to cleaning in the rain though i totally understand living where you do why its much more of a necessity.

I ll sit in the van if I'm dodging a really heavy shower while out working but I can't even do that for longer than a few mins or I lose motivation

For lots of my work I turn up on the same day each month(give or take the odd day)

I only have around 5 customers out of 323 jobs that don't want me cleaning theirs in the rain...I'll skip them or re arrange if it's a stand alone....

I don't see the difference in cleaning a customers windows on a dry morning and then it rains in the afternoon than on a wet day generally....it makes no difference whatsoever

I guess you don't have 3 waterproof jackets you take to work every day then?😄

And yes some wet days I'll use all 3!

I agree. It’s very hard to stay motivated when sitting out a long shower. Absolutely. That’s when i tend to go home.

And i agree with your second point too about it raining in the afternoon.. I just gave up the fight years ago. Can’t be bothered to argue with them.

For me theres light rain and moderate rain which i wont bat an eye lid
Heavy rain which i will work in but feel a bit daft whilst doing so
Then stormy, torrential, sideways rain thats just ridiculous to work in... i draw the line there

The latter is pretty rare thankfully

Yeah come on Daz join the caravan of love ❤️.

Hate caravans!😄

good job we are all different. I hate ugly high rise buildings in hot countries.    every day is like groundhog day.
I am off to a caravan in devon today until monday...... I will be visiting interesting places
and the highlight will be tomorrow when we go on a steam train from paignton to dartmouth.

That is a brilliant heritage railway.

A couple of options.

Stop at Greenway Halt and go to Agatha Christies's house; maybe get the small passenger ferry across the Dart to the Ferryboat Inn.

Do the normal trip and get the ferry across from Dartmouth to Kingswear (might be included in the train ticket?)

Same

I love caravan holidays, prefer them to going abroad in a hotel any day.

Cant beat the sound of rain hitting the van in the middle of the night or waking up at the crack for a little walk through the site to get some bacon. Brilliant, kids always enjoy it more than going abroad as well.

We used to do the old £9.50 a night newspaper offers and have long weekends at Haven sites when the kids were little, like u say, kids loved it. It always brought the big kid out in me and I'd throw bread on top of someone else's caravan so the seagulls banged about on roof at dawn. I think it must have been a "thing" back then because someone was definitely doing it  to ours.  :)

Most people have a life Daz😁 Have kids, grandkids, wives, property and gardens to look after and maintain. These people will mostly value time above money and thus view these days as a blessing.  Get some more hobbies or take on some real world adult responsibilities outside your own wee bubble and you might, just might 'get it'!😄
Valuing time above money.
Spot on 👍.

I have plenty of time off but I can't do my mums garden when it's raining but I can clean windows no problem!😄

Do you charge your Mum £100 per hour or mates rates?
