I'm getting this error message. It's either my cr4ppy laptop or George not receiving uploads.

Snap! Identical. I back up to an external passport drive just to be on the safe side.

Yet again theses app based programs show there unreliability 😂😂😂😂

Just downloaded that program and it's still not having it. I've sent them an email.

Spreadsheets are fine until the computer's hard drive fails. There's a risk to everything, even a book record another windie still uses from his trad days. He can loose it.
I back up George to Onedrive usually once a week. I have George on a Windows Surface Go tablet.
-
I've been using George for 14 years,I have it installed on my laptop, which I back up to an external hard drive on a regular basis,I also have George installed on another PC so if The laptop goes tits up I can just plug the hard drive into the the PC ,then update the PC from the hard drive ,then I'm back working with minimal downtime.
I did use to pay George an annual fee to back up to there server, but found there was often a delay of a few days waiting to hear from Paul which could result in not being able to work whilst waiting for him to send me my data,by doing it the way I do I'm in complete control and find it works for me

I send back up an email to myself a couple of time a week end back up to my windows tablet once a week as it is good to have two current pcs 👍

I don't think Paul is very well these days, so it's good to find other ways to back up your system. Its no disrespect to Paul. I have certainly appreciated being able to use George over the years.
I've had George since July 2006.

It’s not a problem spruce they are on each iPad that we use and also have paper copies never had an issue in 24 years 😂😂😂

I've tried backing George up to another device before. Problem for me was it was all in gobblygooch when I opened it ::)roll what am I doing wrong?
Splash, you're not really contributing much to the thread with your continuous 😂's

I've found a Seagate external hard drive. I've plugged it in but I can't work out how to use it. I'm using a laptop with no disc storage.

Found One Drive. @Spruce how do you get One Drive to come up when you select 'Do you want to backup your data to a USB or other drive'?
-
I use a usb stick/ flash drive thingy . Small pence from Amazon next day delivery if you’re stuck .
-
Found One Drive. @Spruce how do you get One Drive to come up when you select 'Do you want to backup your data to a USB or other drive'?
This is the way I do it.
Exit George.
Are you sure you want to exit George?
Yes.
Backing up your data - please wait.
Do you want to backup your data to a usb or other drive?
Yes.
I have George on C drive on my tablet so I backup to that by pressing OK.
Backup complete.
Then I go into "This PC" on the front screen, then double click on local disc (C).
George is on my list toward the top which included program files and Windows.
Click on George and all of George comes up.
Backup is on the top of the list of folders. Open that and there is a single file called Backup.geo. I click on that and drag it into OneDrive which is in my column on the left.
Open one drive and the backup file is there. You still have a backup saved file on George.
The strange thing is that George will not allow me (as far as I can see) to backup directly to Onedrive.

I'd be concerned that I would lose a flash drive tbh. In the early days I would email myself a backup copy. My emails are also held on my internet provider's servers, but I haven't done that for years.
The thing I do think about is when George and the latest Windows OS aren't compatible. My tablet isn't able to run Windows 11, so unless Microsoft change their software, I will have to run Windows 10 as long as I can.

I forgot to add;
Every time you back up after this by transferring your backup into Onedrive, your program will ask you if you want to replace your old file with the new one. I also do this. All I'm interested in is having the latest file as a backup.
I have used this backup when transferring George onto my Surface Go tablet from my old computer running XP.

I've just done some work and have saved it to a USB stick. It's 'XA30A'
So I then right clicked it to open it and this comes up. Am I doing something wrong? I thought George would be visible 🤷♂️

Looks like some virus to me

I've got an external hard drive and the same happens with that. Same happened on an older PC.

Is it possible your computer is automatically opening that file as a text document in notepad, you could try right clicking on that document and select "open with" and then select George program. By going of your screenshot it looks like the GEO file is set as a notepad document.

I'll give it a try. Thanks for your input 👍

If you download data restore on spare pc, then you can save back ups using it, just click on the latest date to add to replace your last version.

Save to.... C\ Users \ (your profile name\ OneDrive \

Uploaded latest work from George to my external hard drive. XA31B. Done a right click on it and this message pops up. 'How do you want to open this file?' This is p1ssing me off now!

No sign of George anywhere.
-
Don't open the data file up directly. It won't work like that. You need to download and install the backup program from the George site. Just drag and drop the backup file you want onto the backup program icon.

I’m no computer expert but I don’t think you click on the file to open or read the update . I assume you open George the programme reads your update.
When you have to start again on a new computer you download the data restore programme and drag the update in the box
-
I've got a feeling (might be wrong) that you can't open a saved backup file and read it like you would when you open the George program. Happy to be proved otherwise though.

I don't use George but have a bit of computer programming experience.
From what you have posted it looks like the backup (.geo file) is a compressed file that isn't human readable. I would guess George uncompressed the file if you imported it back as a saved backup.
To test this I would take a backup, install George on another computer then import the backup. You should have an exact copy of the original George installation.

No problems with cleaner planner....ive been using it for many years now.Well worth the 15 notes a month to me....👌

RIGHT, I'm getting somewhere. Someone earlier in the thread suggested Data Restore. This is a George download. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/5bagowrpznp6f8q/Photo%2001-02-2023%2C%2016%2052%2035.jpg?raw=1)
What you do is save your work to a memory stick or external hard drive, then drag your last upload into the desktop short cut. The time and date will be visible here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/iztoiphji50gp9z/Photo%2001-02-2023%2C%2016%2053%2059.jpg?raw=1)
You can then click restore and that will overwrite your old backups. If you click 'select another folder/drive' your devices will show in there. I've decided to store on a USB stick.
You've also got a download called DataFix from George. I've clicked on that and I'm hoping that will sort my WinSock problem.
At Auv, it doesn't look like you can view George any other way.
EDIT: the data restore seems to restore automatically as I could see backups dating back to 2020 which I hadn't inputted.
EDIT: the DataFix didn't sort my WinSock Error

When closing George down just at the point of backing to his 'cloud ' i get an error message , so i don't know if it's backed up or not then ...try to save to USB , select drive , 'saves' but no data in file so if this laptop dies i have lost 650 jobs and details , emailed now 5 times over a week to THREE different emails , group doesn't seem to exist , very concerned and having to pay a 'geek' to come around £60 an hour to save ...does ANYONE HAVE A CONTACT NUMBER ?!?! Paul has been great in the past i said my mails had previously gone to spam so ... closed , used the data restore , rebooted , closed and still same error like a connection error to his cloud , desperate !

Bump.
-
I've had an email from Paul. The problem is their end.
Sorry for the delay, I’m inundated with eMails from users with the same
problem.
We’ve been let down by our internet hosts and I can’t contact them. I fear
they may have gone bust !
Hopefully we can resolve the problem and get it up and running again soon
but I can’t give any timescale I’m afraid.

George is still backing up to your local hard drive but it would be a good idea to backup to an external drive or USB stick regularly while it's offline.

Thanks Flasher, a keystroke by keystroke description of how to back up and retrieve in the correct format would be useful.

If you got a spare pc, laptop or tablet then download George onto it, download George Fix and download George restore all from the internet George online systems i think it is.
Anytime you finish with George on your main computer copy it onto a spare USB drive, then plug the usb into your spare PC, laptop, whatever. Before opening George program, go to George restore program and select your USB as one of the restore options and save it onto George restore, it will add to George restore.
Click on the file you have just uploaded to George Restore and it will replace your previous update to your last one installed on George window cleaning program if selected, so when you start up George for windows it will be updated to the latest back up. Hope this helps some of you.

I dropped my laptop once and it stopped working, screen shattered, so lucky I had a back up with it all saved to within a couple days, lesson learnt that day and always make sure I got a spare hard copy updated regularly just in case.

Still not able to upload to their site. I'd have thought they would have sorted it by now ???
-
Sounds like a change of app is needed then ?.

I moved to Squeegee a few months ago, i used George for nearly 13 years but it's had its day now i think...

I agree, I guess its their way of shutting it down?

George window cleaning software has ceased trading owing to poor health and lack of internet hosting for the time being so guess that's it for now. Been a good long run!
Best £50 ever spent and £12 for annual back ups.
Wish Paul all the best for the future whatever he does.
Luckily have "George" on a back up laptop for emergency.

-
Anyone relying solely on George for their work really should make a copy of the program, restore and data fix program along with a spare program on a spare laptop or notebook as losing all that work would be a nightmare scenario with no outside help from Paul via email any longer.
-
All very sad but as I said before ones pay for theses apps and have no control what’s so ever over what can happen to their business data , this is why I won’t use such systems .
-
I echo all the above advise. George can still run your business for many years to come as long as you have done all your preparation.
I've never had to contact Paul over the last 12 years of using it, as it's all really easy to fix.
Make sure you have all the install programs. I have always stored them on a cloud drive to avoid issues if my laptop went pop. All my backups go straight to my cloud too.
If you run into issues, just uninstall and install again and run your backup set. If it still does not work, assuming you've tried the Datafix too, the issue belongs to your laptop, so go get a new one.
Best £50 quid ever spent. Scares the hell out of me if one of those fancy cloud systems close down without notice leaving all users high and dry.
George can just carry on for as long as you need.
Only threat will be future Microsoft Windows issues, but very unlikely. But if it becomes an issue it's easy to buy older sufficient laptops on eBay.
I can't see any reason I can keep using George for another 12 years.

Mr. Thicky Luddite Here.
On my laptop I have Data Restore and George 3. I now store to an external hard drive at least once a week.
As yet I have not had a failure in George on the laptop and I have checked I can restore data from the external drive.
Have I got enough protection?

It's one of the three files in the other thread I uploaded. You will need all three instal programs stored safely. They are all needed if you need to instal George again. You can't just copy Grorge, Data restore and Datafix from one computer to another. It needs to be installed.

What size memory sticks are you all using?
I'm using a 500gb external hard drive. I'm not computer literate at all but I have 64gb memory stick too if I need it. If you do a restore to the latest backup could you delete previous backups to save space on the memory stick?
