				Had a customer pay me £200 instead of £20 once , I think with that large sum of money I would be vary careful about it it could easily be viewed as money laundering. I would check with the bank before doing anything.

I would say I would check and get back to them. For example should it have been £17.00 or £170.00.

You need to up your prices or it's a race to the bottom. 
He might be washing his money 🤔.

I would say I would check and get back to them. For example should it have been £17.00 or £170.00.
That is part of the scam, the caller pretends to be the customer as he/she has the customers address, bank account details sat in front of them. The fact that the caller sounded nervous would point to it being a scam. If they spoke with a funny accent I would say 100% scam.

Agree. If I didn't have a customer's phone number, I would have driven round to the house and spoken to the customer directly before I reacted.
The other issue would have been getting his bank to credit transfer that amount. Natwest have payment limits per day. They had those in force for many years. My payment limit is £5000.

				The scam usually works like this:-
Scammer get control of a random bank account, sends large amount of money to a legit  business/person from compromised account. Then contacts them to say they are a customer and have accidentally overpaid and asks the legit person to send back to scammers clean account. This is then ‘clean’ money as the banks won’t usually reverse a payment that has been sent willingly.
Hope it isn’t the case here, but it’s not looking great.

				I really don't how this works for the scammers but what would  I do if a large amount of money came into my  account and I then received a phone call to asked for it back my answer would be as follows " meet me at my bank at 9-30 Monday morning and we can go in together to sort this out.
About 1 year ago £1,000 was paid into my business account from a person who's name was not on my customers list?
3 days later I went into my bank to inquire about it and telling them that no one owes my £1,000 
The bank advised me to just leave it there and see what happens, to this day a year later no one has claimed it and besides I've spent it now LOL

So the payment of 15k never actually went into his account then?
Yeah the payment did go into his account. Here's the way i think it was supposed to work. The money went from his customers account to his account, it went through as it was a recognised payee, so in theory no problem. It was the scammers who then wanted my mate to "refund" the £15k to an account they chose.
What happened was he went to see his customer and they both went to the bank together and both of them got their banks accounts frozen while the fraud team looked into it. He had no banking facilities for about 10 days till it was sorted.

				I've been in touch with my bank who have reassured me that everything is fine and it was a just an innocent mistake.

No, it was returned to his customers account where it had come from.

I think the idea is the scammer hacks into (your) account and sends me 17k. Then rings me posing as a customer and gets me to refund them into the scammers actual account. Therefore you have been scammed but will be able to claim the money back from me as a fraudulent transaction.  I however have sent 17k to a scammer that I probably can't get back. The scammer has 17k.

No it’s not the goodwill of the victim at all it’s illegal to try and keep the money paid in,you should contact customer care to cover yourself and let them deal with any reimbursement.

No it’s not the goodwill of the victim at all it’s illegal to try and keep the money paid in,you should contact customer care to cover yourself and let them deal with any reimbursement.
Illegal or not, there's plenty of potential "victims" out there who wouldn't just pay  it straight back, hence the scammer is relying on their goodwill to do so without informing authorities ie bank getting involved, so yes goodwill very much part of it.
By pure coincidence, I had a customer pay me £111 yesterday instead of £11. First time in 18 years that's happened to me.

 :D, I was a very good boy and contacted them and returned it.

				If I need to pay a new supplier by Bacs I have to have an account name,  sort code and account number that match before I can send any money.
Then I can only send a maximum of £750 with the first transaction unless I go through hoops to over- ride it. 
When we had a couple of new windows fitted, I paid a small deposit to cover that first transaction and then got bank clearance to pay the rest. I had no come back or bank guarantee on that payment. I took the risk that I wanted to pay that money to the supplier.

I have made one off payments by BACS  for many thousands of pounds never had any issues , it does  however  ask extra questions like has someone told you to make this payment ,and are you sure you want to continue  with this transaction but the amount has always been authorised.

				Crazy scam a few doors down from one of my jobs in croydon the scammers stole the bank cards then brought gold with them and had it posted to an address locally 
Then knocked on the door asking for their missed delivered parcel 
So far so good got away with hundreds of thousands  
Until 
They sent 5k to this address in croydon the house owner got the parcel and took it to the pawn broker and got the cash and spent it on   Drugs and other stuff   Before the scammers turned up to collect their I’ll gotten and the fight started  proper battle royal by all accounts 
Stabbing and a gun was  produced. 
Enter the boys in blue who collected the lot the scammers left the country only one got caught and got five 
 the other guy got three for class a  and my job got a great story 
One of the reasons why Croydon is the worst place to be a window cleaner by a country mile  or even 5 kilometres!!

				I remember when I went up to Purley in the early 90s to help a bloke do his new paper round from 11pm till around 4am,it was a different place then when we went out delivering there was hardly any cars or people about at all he used to drive over the central reservation to turn round in them days 😂. 
Doubt you’d get away with that today it’s probably like 9 o’clock in the evening now at 2 in the morning.
