I’m the same. 22 years in and find it so dull
At Christmas I changed my schedules from 4 and 8 weekly to 6 weekly only.
Lost a few 8 weekly’s but now only work 3 days a week.
That has helped but the 3 days are big, too big!

Been sick to death of it for the last twelve years. It’s the most mind numbing boring job ever invented. However, there are worse jobs out there!

Do you guys not listen to books or music etc as you work?

I really enjoy my job. Love is a strong word, I wouldn’t go that far.

But I do love the flexibility, and the freedom of being your own boss. There are far far worse jobs out there that pay a lot less too.

I think quite a few get bored from time to time. It is what it is,  think of the alternatives and then focus on the positives and make plans outside of work or go numb cleaning windows relentlessly. There's more to life than just work so find a happy compromise.

Very boring at times.

Short days help.

I don’t mind working, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t ‘boring’. It is.

I go out with a positive attitude, and enjoy being outdoors.

5 hours is a long enough day on the glass.

Yep cant stand it, been that way for a few years.

Its just like any other job now, force myself out to work for the money but its rarely enjoyable, its either freezing cold, wet, windy, miserable or just like this week too hot, suns burning my eyes out, sweating, hayfever starting. Have to rinse a lot more as well.

Its pretty lonely and depressing and theres only so many times you can listen to podcasts, soon as i get out i cant wait to get home and when the weekend comes its a big relief.

Coming home knackered most days with aching shoulder and pains.

But its no different to what most people do go to work, just got to get on with it, like you say where else you gonna earn this money and look at the positives home for 3pm most days and 4 day work weeks so it could be worse.

The odd thing is i dont actually mind the cleaning of the glass, i think its just the physical relentless toll on the body that gets to me along with too much time to think, drive yourself insane with thoughts.

Cheery Daz’ll be along in a moment…

Can just hear him now… you need to refine your round, compact your work, do short days, do some price rises, work in the rain, buy a hot water system, get some light poles & brushes, some gortex clothing,  join a band, join a gym, pay just £300 rent, stay at your mrs house, get some heated seats, take sandwiches, get some aircon, buy a new van….🤣

I travel around the beautiful countryside of the South West, enjoy the lovely weather, listen to radio comedies and documentaries, drink tea and at some point, clean windows.
It's a rather nice life.

It’s an easy life especially when I’ve just watched 10-15 minutes of GMTV and seen what’s going on in the world, the grass isn’t always greener what a true saying that is.

Honestly if your struggling when the weather is this good (like it has been for the last week or so )I feel sorry for you....it must be horrible to go to work every day and hate what you do....

I'm 29 years in and 50 years of age and I don't think this job has been any easier/better than it is today for me....I wouldn't say I love it but I find it very bearable....

Look at all the people that are sat down all day staring at a screen!it's much healthier to be outdoors working  in the fresh air working a lot less hours than most people...

I've got a fairly easy, stress free, well paid, healthy job with plenty of free time....that's all I've ever wanted really and I've got it these days...🙂👍

I've done it for 30 years
20 years in ICI As well
The WC years were the best
I was on 12 hours shifts (killer)
I amble out around 10 do 3 or 4 hours, 3 days a week, listen to music stop at a cafe in the country, have a coffee in the park.
Hourly rate is gob smackingly amazing (not telling how much😂)
Been doing this for the past 6 or 7 years, 9 months to go, still pretty good for my age, lots of free time for all my hobbies.
If I don't like a job I just drop it.
Would I do the same again?
No
I should never have  taken the job in ICI  after 7 years window cleaning.
There is a lot worse jobs ie:- anything in an office 🤣🤣

window cleaning - love it  ;D

12 years in - which is twice as long as any job in engineering (always something to make the company go bust or relocate)

it put food on the table - ready cash so no credit cards or trying to make that £5 last until the end of the month

Nice car and now 4 bed detached bungalow with double garage and cliff top views of the sea

how can you not love it ?

To be fair for those of us who don't like it maybe it's not the job...

I've never enjoyed a job I've had, maybe I just don't like working or maybe I'm just a miserable get and can never be happy I dunno but that's how it feels. Even now when I have more spare money then I've ever had it doesn't being me pleasure I quite often think whats the point I'm no happier than when I was skint.

Having said all that i never think that way when I'm not working I'm quite happy outside work and weekends etc but when out cleaning windows is when all these thoughts come.

Maybe some of us are just not right in the head  :D

Very few of my window work equals the hourly rate of roof cleaning.

Get yourself a job in a factory doing 12 hour nights and stick to it for 2 weeks.

You’ll absolutely love window cleaning again when those 2 weeks are up.

The above says it all do just that then move out with another woman before you realise you already had it all at home and more lol, massive amount of jobs out there worse than ours and another thing if a lot of people knew how good we had it you wouldn’t have a job.

I know it defeats the object of getting around quickly but I quite like little chats with some of my customers.

I also like getting ideas for what to do with or put in the garden. Pick their brains.

Been doing it since the 70's and still working now at the ripe old age of 69, I never get fed up with it and love the job and most importantly the freedom it offers to do what and when you want with no boss looking over your shoulder.

My favorite part of the job is doing 1 off facia and gutter cleans, I just love seeing the end results as do the customers.

I agree. The job is what we make of it. The job its self is rather mind-numbing, but an occasional good intelligent conversation does the world of good.
My son says that if he could fit brushes to my lips, we would get through our work in double quick time.  ;D

I totally despise it , have done for some time , I can’t bring myself to work for anybody else either.
I have sold loads of my round recently to make the round more bearable but that hasn’t worked either , the only thing is the money to time ratio that keeps me in it !

I am in the process of getting another business going to make my escape, garden statuary can be a good earner, it’s not as lucrative as windows but it’s a way of getting out .
I advertised some of my concrete Gonks on the run up to Christmas to get a bit of pocket money and within 2 hours I had orders for 79 at £10 a pop , I only had one mould at the time so a lesson was learned  ;D , anyway, onwards and upwards eh !

Window cleaning can be boring, but it's good money for what we do.
Other jobs are boring too, trust me, i've had them.
I'd rather have a boring job, over a stressful job...(and for the money we earn, that seems to be the alternative).

But this job has given me much more than money, it's given me 'perspective'.
I meet the same 390 customers every 8 weeks (give or take a bit) and I have a very small 'sneak preview' into their lives.
Some, I would love to aspire to (and they are not necessarily the richest ones).
Others, I think...i'm glad I don't live like that, or have their problems.

Mostly, it's shown me that me and my family are actually doing OK in the scheme of life.

Yes it's a job and it can be boring, but it's what you make of it.

We’ve got it easy if this job is stressing you in some way you either have to many employees or the wrong type of work, most of the time all we have to worry about is the weather.

I am lucky where I live ....eg tomorrows run is all in the countryside , it is my furthest round . I start about half hour away right by the botanic gardens in wales , and finish about 20 mins away from home , the scenery is spectacular .
other days I am in the beacons national park .
I think its much better to focus on the positives ....

Surroundings make such a difference . I was lucky enough to have Stamford and its surrounding area as my patch when i worked for Anglian Water and i loved it. I was moved nearer to home which made total sense logistically and i did exactly the same job  but grew to hate it. Purely down to my surroundings. If i could clean windows in a beautiful area like yours James i would absolutely love this job.

I'm glad that I decided to employ a couple of lads because there are days when I really don't want to go. So now with these lads earning me a decent wage I can afford not to work on the tools and even think about going abroad for a few months in the winter.

Imagine getting to 70, looking back at your life and thinking ‘well, I cleaned some windows’……..

Every fibre of my being wanted to go out to work today despite my injured foot.i even made a flask and packed lunch, texted customers last night,etc,etc.....

I find it hard NOT to go to work if I'm being honest....I don't need the money either as I've plenty of money behind me these days...

It's just my work ethic that's been ingrained into my everyday life for many years now....

The truth is if I don't rest my foot by having this week off I could end up needing to have a lot longer off work which is not ideal....

I'm off to Liverpool at the end of the month for a dirty weekend with the missus in that new hotel that opened last year(melia).I'm also taking the week off after(queen jubilee week)and got a local music festival to look forward to.

This week is just rehabilitation(gym/swimming/yoga and rest)...and not taking the dog for a walk! ::)roll ;D

You’ll benefit more from yoga than you ever would going down the gym pushing weights I took weights seriously years ago and unless you are pushing yourself every set to failure you’re muscles won’t react and to do this you need steroids.
You’ll only look leaner if you eat right you may as well go down the gym and sit on the rower unless you properly push with the weights,I can tell you something if you’re pushing the weights as you say you wouldn’t be fit to go to work 4-5 days a week lol there’s people that train and there’s people that go to a brightly lit place to look at the crumpet, lost count of the amount of affairs that have started at gyms 🤣🤣🤣

I actually find myself something to get over the top aggy about if I'm out working, just to have a bit of work stress to feel what it's like... Pole hose getting caught on something it really shouldn't have is the main culprit..

I've been weight training seriously for nearly 7 years now.its been one of the best things I've ever done along with stopping smoking and alcohol.obviously I also do a bit of  cardio too while I'm there, swimming occasionally and yoga stretching etc...

I've put on at least 15lbs of muscle in that time and all without the help of steroids.im at my limit now I reckon.i don't want to get any bigger now tbh.just keep what I've got and maybe some slight improvement here and there.

My testosterone will start to dip a bit from now on I expect but the training keeps it higher than it would be if I did nothing and had a crap diet....

By the way I think some bodybuilders are unhealthy, the ones that are taking steroids and have a rubbish diet and train like a madman.in fact I think some of them suffer from mental illness....

Luckily for me we don't get many of them types in my gym...

They are all dying their bloods like molasses on the autopsy results GH insulin on 3 month cycles fake steroids huge problem compared to the 90s,Testosterone replacement therapy keeps the aches and pains away the term I must be getting old is the result of Testosterone levels dropping in men.
Research in America is showing that HRT in men is a better option than nearly killing yourself running on the roads or treadmill 4-5 times a week, anyone know a runner with good knees I’ve yet to meet one over 50 lol.

Maybe not improve your bank balance directly, but a well punctuated sentence will carry more weight and respect.

You could be making the best point in the world, but if you can't spell or punctuate properly, your point may become lost. Just my opinion.

You wouldn't want to be tendering for a job or emailing a potential customer with spelling mistakes etc.

indeed .... that's like telling a professional athlete that doesn't want to build muscle mass eg
tennis player , rugby player, boxer, sprinter etc that weight training wont condition and strengthen them and  is pointless and wont work unless you work every set to failure .

Most people would struggle to go out and do 4-5 days work manually if they trained hard unless they were 20-30 years old.
