I've a 3d Power Up Reel. Very happy with it apart one one thing. The switch is either off or on obviously. So as a cold user I mostly end up pumping the button to reel in as kinks in the hose etc nearly drag your hand and cloth into the reel. I also had it very briefly jam on for a spit second and it worries me it could happen again but for longer. I have the red switch pictured below.
Does anyone know if you can get a trigger speed controller switch (not a dial) that works similarly to how an old Scalextric controller worked? i.e. the more you squeeze, the faster you reel in, giving more control?

Get on to waterworks and they should replace it with the yellow controller that they used before the red ones are not good .

I’ve seen posts on this before but what’s better about the yellow switch? It’s still just on or off. I see they sell them in their website.

The yellow one is much more robust but works the same as the red one .

I think this is a shame as the red one looks a smarter piece of kit.
I suppose looks aren’t everything 😆

Can't you open it up and see what's happening inside? Maybe is just needs a little electrical grease to get it operating smoothly.
I would also seriously consider adding a heavy duty relay into the system so that switch isn't taking a full load with each operation.

Can't help you regarding a Scalextric type of controller.
You can replace the button switch they usually supply a spare one , but the red casing is very flimsy it’s better to replace it with the old yellow one a much better solution.

Maybe I’ll order the yellow switch but I don’t see how it would work any different? It’s either on or off. Full pelt or not. I thought this was normal. Been like it since I had it last summer.

They are all the same you need to go on and off with the switch to adjust the speed

Spring do a speed controller for Pure freedoms electric reel which will slow the speed down on their reel. I'm not sure if that will work on a 24v motor being powered by 12v. (I presume Waterworks is still using a 24v motor and PF is using a 12v motor. Ian Shepard would be the person to ask.) But it's not the equivalent of an accelerator pedal.
Using a relay will still switch the motor either on or off.
There must be something on YouTube on how to wire a relay up. I'll look when I fire my desktop up.

I am pleased with the reel but I think there’s definitely potential for an accident. I was expecting some sort of clutch/torque system like on a battery drill for when it gets stuck. Not just blow a fuse or yank your arm in. Have only blown the fuse once when i first had it & i got caught on a gate. You’ve also got to be careful to let off the button in plenty of time before the rectus fitting comes flying round the corner towards you or your van.

Not just blow a fuse or yank your arm in. Have only blown the fuse once when i first had it & i got caught on a gate. You’ve also got to be careful to let off the button in plenty of time before the rectus fitting comes flying round the corner towards you or your van.

I'm not sure why they have to make the videos so complicated. I would always use a 5 pin with a push on connector and just not connect up pin 87a.
The rest is per a 4 pin relay.
I guess the reason why I always link to a 5 pin on Ebay as they are the most commonly sold. I have a spare relay with connector in my parts bin. Not always but generally a 4 pin relay is 30amp and a 5 pin is 40 amp. IMHO you need a 40amp. I also see the 5 pin is cheaper than the 4 pin.
The controller that Spring make does have an anti snag (dead end) facility. So in reality, it's a much more robust flow controller most of us use every day.

As far as a speed controller is concerned, it would have to be a PWM controller.
The problem with these is heat and so they are usually housed in breathable metal housings.

In our application, water and damp could make this a no-go. The other concern is how the Chinese rate their product. This is supposed to be 60amp, but who knows. I purchased a 40 amp for driving a Shurflo pump under no load conditions. The 40 amp only had a continuous current rating of 8/9 amps if memory serves me. I remember being glad I hadn't ordered the 20 amp equivalent.

The motor is stoppable if you stand on the hose etc it’s got to have a certain amount of torque to pull the hose in . We have never had any problems with them just go on a s off the button , we have 6 3D reels and 2 pure freedom reelmasters all are very similar you can adjust the speed on the pure freedom one but we have them set on 95 out of 100

I have no idea there are no labels on them that I can see the pure freedom one is a stainless steel casing the water works one is black painted steel , they do however look similar .

Thanks. They are now using a 12vdc motor rather than the original units using 24vdc motors, or are they?
I've looked on the www.yalumotor.com website and they don't list a 12v motor, only 24 or 36V. I wonder if they have just changed the label.

My ionics electric reel has a relay as standard and the switch is similar to the red one in the pic but seems very solid.

The switch in effect has to operate like a deadmans handle in that the button needs to be pressed to operate the motor and reel in, The instant the button is released the motor stops. With a powered rotating device some of the Mechanical directives come into play and this operation is an important safety feature. There are High current controllers available that would help you manage speed and have additional safety features.
