Title: older window cleaners......
Post by: dazmond on June 17, 2021, 06:39:01 am
i met one of the local old timers yesterday that ive known for years.....he s 78 now and works around 15 hours a week, still on ladders too...

he s been window cleaning for 60 years now and looks great for his age,he gave half his round to his son around 8 years ago now.he has no plans to retire yet.

im amazed his knees are still intact but i think the key is he s got no weight on him and he gave up smoking over 30 years ago.he likes a drink but doesnt drink heavily anymore.

ive picked up a lot of his work over the last 28 years at double/triple his prices(at least 150 jobs).he cant believe i only work another 10 hours more than him a week......he still thinks im in my 30s!i told him im 50 in october! ;D

so are you older guys hoping to carry on for as long as you can physically keep going?or are you planning on retiring soon?

He’s an outlier Daz. There’s no way the average 78 year old is physically fit enough to even climb a ladder, let alone work off one 15 hours a week.

I’d happily keep some cream jobs into my retirement to top up the pension if fitness allows but I pity anyone that absolutely depends on it tbh.

If you’ve been seeing him around your area for 28 years how does he think you’re 30? Does hi think you’ve been cleaning windows since you were 2? 😂😂

I'm 56 and plan to keep going as long as I possibly can, can't imagine sitting around all day it would drive me insane!

I have structure in my life without work.
Never get bored
My legs are shot from 40 years playing sport
I'm 64 got an ICI pension, will get full state pension in 18 months
Plan to keep some Comercial work, 2 days per month of that should do me
Not saying hourly rate on that but its very good.
Health, apart from my legs /joints is pretty good

I'm 66 just started state pension.
I work with my wife we are in a partnership she still has another 8 years to go!
Looks like I will be cleaning windows until I'm at least 74.
But I don't mind working we see some of our retired customers bored out of their skull.
They are long days when you have nothing to do some people seem to have no interests or hobbies.
We have some lovely customers I would miss them.

I am 57 shortly. Next year I should be able to retire if I choose, but would probably only do so if I moved to a different part of the country, as I would not be bothered to start a round from scratch again.

I think it is important to keep physically active, especially as we get older. Use it or lose it.

Retire sit down put you’re feet it’s the beginning of the end seen it so many times men go from looking like they are fit and well to old and frail, gotta to have something to get up for each day other than a short walk and a jigsaw puzzle 🧩 🤣

Not posted for a while, but here's my 2 penneth. I'm 59, still on ladders and doing 5-6 days a week. I'm still in reasonable nick, although I've put some pounds on over the last year due to the lockdown! I have no plans to fully retire, but there will come a time when I will cut down to maybe 2-3 days a week. I have a good number of shop fronts that I do, so I will keep those and cherry pick which residentials I will retain. My son and daughter work with me, so when I cut back they can take the rest of the run over.

I've been able to work only 3 days a week since being 50
I enjoy outside work and the freedom the job provides
Probably only keep the top Comercial stuff as its too good to sell
Cleaned an office yesterday £90 in 20 minutes, rude not to🤣🤣

I'm one the oldies at 68 and still going, the bodies a bit worn out now and def no more ladder work for me.

I sold half of my round a couple of years ago so now consider myself a part timer working from 9am - 1pm 3/4 days a week.

I think I will keep this up until the body gives up as I find daytime TV boring and vegetating.

I dont think i will be on the tools much longer, im 39 now i think once i get to 40 the sensible thing to do is to look towards the future and retirement plans etc, i dont currently have a pension or even a mortgage yet.

Don't leave getting a mortgage too long or you'll never get started. Mine was paid off a few year ago and going for my second mortgage now

Never been in a financial position to get one, earned minimum wage for most of my working life and with kids etc simply havent had the income required.

I made a mistake 2 years ago by changing from sole trader to LTD co, which has really hampered me...

Good news is we have just applied for a mortgage and been accepted, bad news is looks like the house we are buying  might fall through for other reasons, but hopefully on the right track now at last.

How did changing from sole trader to limited hamper you?

My own personal view is if your out on the tool at 70+ it's not for the 'fun'  of it

I'll still work part time when I'm older if I'm fit enough even with a £250,000 nest egg built up.....👍

Because lenders typically need to see at least 2 years, and ideally 3 years of books when lending.

Although ive been self employed 5/6 years, i essentially had to "start again" when i went Ltd, in lenders eyes i only have 2 years books not 5/6.  Plus i didnt take much income the first year i kept it in the company......they also need to not only check my personal income, but to check the companys income to see its performance. On top of that lots of lenders look less favourably on dividend income, so it meant that we could only find 1 lender who was willing to give us the mortgage.

Going through this myself just now but changing from self to limited shouldn't make a difference

If you need an advisor I can pass a name on they specialize in us "difficault" applications
