I look to shoot for £50 an hour turnover minimum but thinking that's a bit low now.
Im in Surrey so decent area.
Will be putting up prices soon which will help.
Thoughts?
-
Just earn what you’re happy with
-
NWH will be along soon to tell you how to do it...😁
-
What makes you think it's a bit low?
Are all the competition charging £70?
-
Hourly has many factors - the biggest of which is your speed - some one may charge 30 for a house but can only do 1.5 of these per hour on average other may do 2.5 or even 3 on average
If your kit happy with your rate put our prices up - otherwise crack on and don't listen to others that have ho bearing on your buisness

One on my brothers lives in Surrey...his house cost him 370k a few years ago..2 bed end terraced house....
I'm happy with £40-£50 as an average hourly rate up north but I'd want to average a lot more if I had his mortgage!😄😬👍
-
My highest rate for an hours work is £120(commercial)and £90 for domestic but its usually between £40-£50...

You're right, take you out of the arena and there is only a few dickheads left!!🤐😄

Is that £50 an hour, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week?
I don’t know how you’re coping!!!

What's your hourly rate then big man?

Nobody works 8 hours a day 5 days a week actually 'on the glass' window cleaning mate.....its a lot less even the guys that say they work full time....👍
-
Big man 😀
How can anyone think that £50 an hour is a bit low??? Get real will you.
You’re a cleaner remember. £50 an hour is a hell of a lot more than Police, Firemen and Nurses can ever dream of earning. And most of the rest of the population.

Its not profit though is it, so not a true hourly rate. Im talking of hourly rate before taking out expenses mate.
-
Everybody working has expenses.
If what you earn is paying your bills, getting you a half decent holiday every year and hopefully a little bit in a savings account then you’re laughing.
If not then look to employ as well and you’ll earn a bit off each of the boys you take on. You will not be going too much higher than £50 an hour on the glass. I don’t care what anybody says. You may have days when the hourly rate could be a bit more but it certainly won’t be all day every day working on your own mate
-
sparkys, joiners hourly rate in employment around £14 + hourly rate Take a look on the Job Sites like Reed , Not great wages but thats what you get. unless self employed People do not have any idea as to what we make per hour when added up
Security guards who have to deal with crap minimum wage. £30 + hourly rate for a windy is good. i know most earn around £40 + Be happy we can get away with it. i wish i was 20 years younger with the work i have as i know when you reach 60 it will slow you down. Imagine being a Pensioner and earning the money we can earn now.
-
Spot on post mate 👍
-
No wonder Gardners have stopped giving free postage when all you lot keep going on about is how much you earn ::)roll
-
Exactly right James
I would never tell a customer what I earn per hour they’d have a fit 8)
As for the rate mine increases year on year. I drop jobs that aren’t in line or put me out given half a chance
I have given this a lot thought. There will be a time when hit the ceiling in regards to hourly rates.
50 an hour on average and add on jobs obviously more can’t be grumbled at
-
This is the thing that most simpletons don’t understand someone says they earn 50 notes an hour and they start believing it,add up all you’re fuel-Tax-Nat ins-poles + equipment etc van payments or van repairs and then subtract that from you’re 50 notes an hour.
Then add days you can’t work due to weather or holidays the list goes on and on,that 50 don’t look great now does it.
-
Another thing is the chippys and sparkys working for 14-15 quid an hour are working for someone they aren’t running a business either they are employed,if they are and they earn that they want to start window cleaning they’ll earn far more you couldn’t run a bath on that living down here.

What if you dont want to employ(or work full time)and like 2 or 3 luxury holidays a year abroad?a new car every 3 years as well as tucking away at least 5k a year?
Yes...that's right... you gotta keep charging more for new jobs, have regular pay rises for existing customers and compact your work even more...

Simpletons 😀 from you!! Priceless.
I will say it again. EVERYBODY has expenses. Whether you are a shiner, chippy, electrician etc etc. How many sole trader chippys, plumbers, electricians, roofers etc are on £50 an hour? Not many! For a start you won’t get an hourly rate out of them. They are on fixed price work or day rate. Only very rarely has another trade tried quoting me more than £200 a day. So they don’t get the work. And again they have expenses out of that.
Window cleaning is one of the best paid ‘trades’ around.
So if you are up to the £50 an hour rate for say 5-6 hours a day after travelling between jobs then that’s far from shabby.
Enjoy it. We are very very lucky.

I joined in 2009 and couldn't believe window cleaners could earn £30 for an hours work or earn anywhere near £200 a day......
Of course the real reason was my round was very underpriced and I was still trad.....now them figures would be fairly disappointing 12 years on.....

Different job entirely with WFP you can’t compare earnings with someone using ladders,it’s like saying is walking as fast as running as far as earnings go it may as well be another or a different type of job.

I’m afraid that’s the mentality that a lot of window cleaners have it’s nothing personal you did a job and that’s what you wanted for it,are you running a business or is it a hobbie-part time gig.
Who’s paying for all these expenses is it you or the customer it’s been said so many times if you take 200 a day that’s not going in you’re pocket is it,if you employ with that attitude it’s doomed before it gets off the ground.

well I don't employ anyone so that's going to affect me is it? besides, as stated I'm a OAP topping up my pension so I don't need to make a fortune

Surely this is false reasoning ( above) why work for less money. Whatever your circumstances
You could work even less for the same money.
-
There is a guy round our way got a redundancy package so spent on pressure washer and gutter vac and new van.
He posted flyers with £25 per gutter clean regardless of size of house :o
-
This has been the problem for years with domestic window cleaning certain cleaners almost freezing prices in some cases for over 10 years.
-
That graph says 2015, so only 6 years out of date.
-
If you employ people or previously employed people, it gives you a more money focused mentality as you have to organise work, wages, sick pay, holiday pay and see it more as a business to make profit and are well aware of expenses, so you need to justify your income and time more efficiently as there is more than one of you to consider.
You have to value your time and charge accordingly, if you know what you're worth. stick to them prices and value your services so others will value you :)

Fuel don’t cost much if you work local Nat insurance is like £2 a week , poles last years and years. Vehicles have never cost me much maybe I’m lucky always bought low mileage never had a single problem with any van I’ve ever had writing them off is my only cost
I’ve done the maths and missing the years I’ve had to replace a van I get it around 5% which at £50 an hour is £2.50. If lower it’s less ;DNot making that much of a dent is it?
And 40 hours on the glass is easily done I regularly do more than that
-

Why do you care what other shiners are charging ? I earn more than I would doing 12 hour shifts in a well paid factory, add to that flexible hours, the ability to take a holiday at the drop of a hat, very little stress or hassle and its a win win, the fact that I don't measure up to the NWH business model means nothing to me.

Certainly more than NWH - that's why he's so obsessed about the coin he makes

I would say £50 ph in surrey is ok but not great. I can hit that most days up north charging average £12 a house. I would like to think if i was charging £20 a house i would be doing much more than 50 quid an hour.

I wrote degree, the link/graph says wage by decree, I'm sure you understand what that means, its funny when you grammar NAZI's mess up.😁
It's sad when you think that my comment about degree/decree was aimed primarily at you. The person that wrote decree was obviously the person that prepared the chart you posted, not you.
However, as you have called me a grammar Nazi, let me play to that accusation... 🤣
1. It isn't grammar that is wrong it is the spelling which even alters the meaning of the chart. It doesn't raise confidence that the person who prepared the chart has been diligent about the other content it contains.
2. As pointed out by another poster, your chart is six years out of date.
I'm not sure you understand what that means. If you were a goose-stepping grammar Nazi you might.
-
The spelling isn't wrong you just don't understand the meaning of decree and why its in the graph, (the example below may help) plus even though the graph is six years out of date its still able to give a fair comparison, if you want to get picky add on a few percent.
The annual average earnings for benefit calculation ...
https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/progdesc/ssptw/2004-2005/africa/c… · PDF file
The maximum monthly pension is 80% of the insured’s average earnings. Benefit adjustment: Pensions are adjusted by decree periodically. (The pensions were last adjusted in 2005.) Permanent Disability

I am sorry to point out that you are completely wrong.
The graph talks about degrees and earnings that may be achieved. It is a misspelling. Even you referred to degrees.
The second latest example you have linked to (which seems broken) talks about pensions (in Africa) and the fact they are set by decree.
A decree is a declaration of a rule by a governing body or a government, not an illustration of what might be earned by possessor of certain degrees.

Generally I would never comment on how much I earn (only the wife and the taxman are privy to that)
However today I did a gutter and facia clean and charged the lady £140 as quoted 2 weeks previous,
The job did not take as long as I thought it would, in fact 1 hour 20 mins later job done, I have to say I did feel a bit guilty when she paid me £140 in cash
Not bad for a OAP
I would not tell the wife if I were you. (Not if she spends money like mine).

You will knacker your body over time if that is the case.
For me I don't like to spend more than 6 hours/day on glass.
Also factor in to hourly rate things we don't get paid for such as admin work, filling van, maintaining equipment and production of pure water etc. No paid holidays or sick pay and no employer's pension contribution on our behalf.

Income tax isn’t really a expense it’s paid at the end of the year I don’t factor it as an expense. I can pay it when it’s due as an when as every year, and from what people say they earn on here if they can’t then people are chatting bob

That's your issue. There will be others who only spend 1000 on business fuel, with no van payments too. You could argue who is the more foolish, the one working to pay his high expenses or the one working less, or the same for more profit?
Step out of your tiny little world Nigel, if I was ever to take any business advice, it most certainly wouldn't be from you pal!!
Some people struggle to come to terms with just being a window cleaner and it shows.... massively
Who cares what anyone else earns? What relevance has it? If I lifted my house and dropped it in London, it would be worth 8x what it is here! That doesn't mean it's worth that where it is now, it's not and it's common sense why not.
This forum is like a school playground, you've either got billy big balls or the spelling police. Geeze, it gets worse🙄
-
Lol I only said what I spend on fuel you fool please stop having fantasies about me 🤣,so much for putting me on ignore you love my posts.
-
I’m not bothered about being just a window cleaner I love it.

And 40 hours on the glass is easily done I regularly do more than that
You need to redo your maths Jim! Don’t you pay any income tax?
I’d love to know where I can sign up to £2/week national insurance also. Last I checked it was multiple thousands per year.
Without checking I pay class 2 or class 4 which you have to and I’m sure it’s 2.65 or something a week?
Income tax isn’t really a expense it’s paid at the end of the year I don’t factor it as an expense. I can pay it when it’s due as an when as every year, and from what people say they earn on here if they can’t then people are chatting bob
Given that you said you work 40 hours per week on the glass and you will be paying class 4, which is paid at 9% on any profit over £9.5k...So it looks like it’s you who’s chatting bob if you say you’re only paying £2.65 per week NI.

Possibly so but I will have to for the time being. I can do it all alone as it stands but would like to get probably 15% more work to give my lad 2 or 3 days more work a week and give myself a bit of rest!
Expanding fairly rapidly averaging 8-10 new customers a week

Is it ? I last did a tax return some 5 years ago my accountant does it all now. I remember it well though it was 2.65 / week and if you were a fisherman 2.50 / week

Profits were below that then so it may have only been class 2 or 4 I dunno not really that fussed to go looking through it expenses still ain’t that high to make a massive difference to what you should be charging per hour which is the point originally made

Yes the point was that NWH said £50 per hour after all expenses including tax wasn’t as good as it sounds, to which you replied that out of that £50 your expenses would be about £5. Now you’re telling us you have an accountant too, which is another expense. I reckon you need to have a word with him to get a better understanding of expenses.
-
There are one or two on here who have a worrying amount of misunderstanding about what constitutes an expense.
Obviously tax and N. I. are expenses when ever they are paid in the year.
It would be wise to also think about vehicle replacement and depreciation and the fact that you will replace same at some point.
Then making sure that the you have enough for holiday pay, days off and Bank Holidays.
If you don't want to HAVE to work when your state pension age comes round then there is that too.

Tax is not an expense - it's a levy on your profits
That's not to say you shouldn't be allowing for it in your hourly rate
Darran
-
Everything is an expense if it infringes in what ends up in you’re pocket which is down to a work expense that includes Tax and Nat Ins as well as all the other obvious things,it’s not difficult if someone pays 50 quid into you’re bank the reality is you haven’t gained 50 quid profit for that job have you.
How many times do you hear I think 50-60 notes for that job is fair, how many people realise the profit maybe closer to half that it’s Monday tomorrow so another 80-100 notes will be going into the van on fuel and because my jobs are priced correctly the customers will be paying for it not me.
-

If he worked a 40 hour week then he would be paying out £200 a week in expenses(tax and NI not included) which seems doable to me, guys like NWH slip up because they don't realise what it costs to clean a property stays the same no matter what you charge to do it.
-
Be good if you could explain that one to me saying that I slip up.

If tax and NI were an expense then charging less would save you on that expense, as Smudger said its a levy on your profits.
-

Justifying your above average pricing with above average expenses.
-
Ahhh it stays the same regardless of what you charge to clean the property oh I see, tomorrow morning I will be putting 100 notes worth of diesel in my van it’s not going to but if it was pour with rain and I was to go off and clean 2-3 poxy little jobs for 10-15 quid a pop and then go home I’d be around 55 quid down on the day after the above expense.
If you have decent work and this happens you should be able to go out the following couple of days cherry pick jobs that cover that lost day over and above expenses, shifting sand or wheat and chaff as Daz says if you have crap paying work it stays just that if you don’t do at least a 1/3rd over what you want after you’ve covered you’re bills and expenses you may as well get a job working for someone because otherwise why bother, yeah we earn a living but as it’s you’re choice try and make it a half decent one eh.
-
All my work is commercial so my hourly rate has been 0 for god knows how many months, back up and running now on about 80% of pre pandemic work so still not hitting the top figures.
Me and my lads have a set amount of work to get through each day, we do this most days but there is a day or so we’re we will miss it but over all it’s ok. We don’t have a set hourly rate that we aim to achieve. We have a monthly target that we aim for instead.
-

Well it seems that we all work out our expenses/deductions differently. Based on £50 per hour I would generally knock off approx 35% of that for all my expenses including tax and NI and I’m a one man band.
-

Just taking your first paragraph, you haven't lost a £100 to fuel unless you drove 500 miles to do those 'piddly' little jobs. You will probably have at least £90 fuel left to use whether or not it gets used in the coming days or weeks.
-
Someone still has to pay for it and if you’re prices are crap you won’t be able to cherry 🍒 pick and make up for it,to and throw back and forth you need to earn over and above what it costs you to live or like I say work for someone.
If you pay someone 150 a day out on his own in a van provided by you that person needs to bring you back 150 for the privilege, what you get 150 a day for nothing some say “wow wee”.
You keep the van on the road pay the Tax and insurance etc provide water and all equipment all of a sudden after Rishi has his slice you’re 750 is drained, not every week no but on the whole it will be.

🤣🤣 complete nonsense
-
It’s not nonsense
If u put £100 in the tank and stay local and do £45 worth of work on a Monday u will only have used about £10 of fuel. This fuel can then be used to earn more pennies during the week.
So technically u haven’t lost anything u have invested in diesel for the week to allow u to earn ur pennies.
This forum has gone round the bend

It’s an expense you’ll have every week I travel to an area away from home so I will use fuel anyway if I get there and can’t work I’ve used the fuel it’s gone,I’m not one of these people that look out the windows turn over and fart drop the kids to school and I’m back to watch Suzanna on good morning Britain,9-10 it’s put in every week someone’s paying and it ain’t gonna be me and I price according to that.
If you want to kid yourself what you actually earn fair play to you.

Why would you travel there and then not work ? but even if you do it will only be a fifth of the fuel (£20) that you will have used out of your weekly allowance.

No your obviously too thick to understand a weather forecast
so you travel out in pouring rain only to sit around in your van spamming forums and then return home - great buisness I must say ;D ;D ;D ;D
Darran

We all have different expenses the point is we all should be earning more than we spend if not why not,I charge a certain amount to cover my costs etc fuel is just one of them although I spend a fair bit on fuel it’s worth it.
If you fill the van up and don’t use the van you’ve used no fuel lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you also haven’t made any money.
-
Dazza I thought I was on you’re ignore list 🤣💪
-
Trust me if I had listened to the weather forecast and gone by it on dozens and dozens of occasions I would have lost countless days,my work is spread about it can be raining in 1 area when I’m just finishing a job I can drive 10 miles away and it’s like summer.
Unless someone’s driving about in a van with a megaphone telling us to stay in I’ll try almost everyday to do some work, you won’t catch me sitting on the couch Dazza picking the fluff out my belly button 🤣🤣

Just in case your wondering Nigel - my reply and conversation was to dry clean who happened to quote your post which shows in the thread

The point is what someone may get per hour is not in reality what they get in their pocket that is a fact, many times you hear I earn X being self
Employed you pay out in Tax twice a year or quarterly it’s easy to forget to cost everything in to or as an expense because many do.
How many window cleaners do you hear moan when January or July come round I hear many, they either haven’t allowed for it they don’t earn enough or they spend what they earn when again in reality all that you earn is not you’re own.

Do you REALLY think you are teaching anyone anything new here? Do you REALLY think anyone here thinks that their entire income belongs to them and that they think they run a business with no expenses?🥱🥱🥱
-
No I don’t at all but from some of the replies I’m reading it seems like some don’t get it tbh, anyway I thought I was on ignore.
-
Some obviously don’t m8 going by some of the prices for 4-5 bed detached houses they are charging in some cases 20-26 quid add a couple of quid for a conservatory.

Yes we pay tax twice a year but most PAYE pay tax every month. Also we pay less.
In fact once fully established in this business there really isn't that much in terms of business expenditure, unless of course your a big multi van operation.
People often quote van as an expense, insurance, fuel etc. Well a large % of PAYE have a car dont they, that also requires insurance and fuel for their commute to work. I paid cash for my van, my other half has a car on finance and spends more money on fuel then me each week as well as higher insurance costs. Yet she cannot offset any of it against her tax bill like i can.
Yes we have other expenses but most of it is peanuts for a one man band. Tanks, poles, hose reels etc all last years if well looked after and again, are tax deductible.
Most of us don't feel the need to spend a fortune on a van, ionics tanks etc which is why we don't have these huge overheads and certainly don't need to earn £500 a day to pay for these things.
-
That was a very polite and good reply Chris what I meant was you need to allow for something that might go wrong along the way that will cost you, pointless just charging enough to pay you’re bills with nothing left over you may as well work for someone that was all I was getting at.
-

Why though? Not saying I earn just enough to pay my bills, far from it. However the benefits of being your own boss far out weigh that of being PAYE, even if you only make a similar amount to that of PAYE.
Some days I don't crawl out of bed until 9 then I'm home by 3, having earned far more then anyone on £10 per hour. Says it all really.
-
Bear in mind that the full time £10 per hour merchant gets paid holidays, now a works pension and often sickness too.
-
Bear in mind that the full time £10 per hour merchant gets paid holidays, now a works pension and often sickness too.
Thats true but I don't base my earnings on a 52 week, I base it on a 46 week.
In fact almost anyone would bite our hand off if they could earn what we earn in a 46 week year.
-
Unfortunately there is a big disconnect here...
Hourly rate is what you earn - that not profit - the majority view is based this way for example if your paye people say I earn £ 10 an hour and they do - no one says I earn 7.50 an hour because of tax and NI plus pension
Where Nigel is coming from, and is trying to point out he wants £50 an hour after his expenses and tax
And to be honest I can see why, he needs to earn £120 on the glass because he is traveling 2 hours to get to that "plum" job - he may do it in 45 mins but that's 120 divided by 3 so reality is 40 p/h
Personally I wouldn't drive 2 hours passing 50 to 60 p/h work as in the same period my income would be 150 to 180
The big issue is, does your hourly rate after expenses bring in a profit - tax is a little bit different as if you go out and buy 3 extreme poles and a van your expenses will be high but tax low
Personally speaking 50 p/h for a single operator is pretty good (depending on your outlay of course) I know when I was on my own costs ran about 15%
Unfortunately Nigel has a peculiar way at looking at things but worse, poor communication skills
Darran
-
No Dazza it doesn’t work out at that amount per job m8.
-
2 hrs travel to do a job for 120 eh I don’t think so.
-
I spend 3500 a year on fuel at least.
Mines around £1300 and that's using a diesel heater every day!
-
I have come to the conclusion that I have got it all wrong and have waisted 3 decades.
I started 3 decades ago whilst living with my parents . I had a battered old van , a ladder and a bucket.
during those 3 decades I have paid for and raised 3 children, been on some lovely holidays and moved on to a 4 bed detached in a nice area.
nice garden , drive and garage .
I paid for my van and car with cash
I manage to put money buy every month, after paying my bills .
I only travel about 7000 miles a year for work, so I am failing.
I dont get £50 an hour profit .
so I have decided it is not viable for me to carry on . I have been decieving myself for years in a bubble of delusion.
I wish someone could have told me how I am wasting my time years ago
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I decided not to post for a few days as really annoyingly I was letting that certain someone really get under my skin and I’m far too long in the tooth for that.
Surely it’s now time to let this hourly rate thread go? NWH is right EVERYBODY else is wrong. Just leave it be there and focus instead on threads that actually make sense and are useful. I’m just afraid that I’m soon going to be dreaming about that idiot!!!
Ps good post James!

Ps good post James!
the forum is about exchanging ideas and views . for me , more than anything I want to learn from other people .
what some people ( NWH) fails to understand is that the type of properties and income over various parts of the country vary greatly.
some window cleaners have no choice other than have to do fronts only or terraced.
that doesnt mean that they cant find a way to earn reasonable money. the will have learnt to adapt to get their type of work up to speed, to make it pay.
its amazing what we can learn if we shut our mouths and listen more 8)

We all make much more than we should for scrubbing a bit of glass thats for sure. Its criminal really what we can earn ;D
