You are not going to get any headaches immediately and you can pay him just under 13 grand hassle free really, you’ll need to put him on you’re public liability and let your accountant know and you can pay the small amount of Nat Ins and Tax for him quarterly it’s easy enough with 1.

You have to take him on the books to do it properly.
-
If you want him self employed then he really needs his own van and equipment - with hairdresser example they rent a chair but supply their own equipment - they also (officially) can dictate the hours and days they work - if your son can do that then yes - he needs to invoice you each week/month for your records and his
Personally I would do the PAYE route - so he's got some payment in for NI/pension etc...

Whatever you pay him just tell the accountant and they should do the rest it’s not as stressful as you think having an accountant takes a lot of stress away.

will a need public and employers liability insurance ?
whats all the pension scheme that you have to offer?
when can you sack him ? if he takes pish oot of the holiday/ sick / days of etc
what bout bank hols ? do you just give him what he earns or do you have to give him more ie time and half or dare a say double time

You don’t need employers liability insurance for a family member.

I wouldn’t worry too much about holiday etc when he’s off sick you’ll be glad of the day off without him so you can have a break from watching him constantly on his phone 😂🤣🤣.

You really need to put a proper bit of research in - look up some employment web-site etc..
If you have an accountant then they can do it all (for a fee) but its very straightforward
Terms of employment is for you to set out - again use government web site to see what's allowed and reasonable
You can say he is self employed - make up what fibs you like to justify it, - (you could even make him a partner with 1% share holding altho this may bring other costs when doing accounts ) if you are just employing on the cheap to avoid tax or paperwork then thats done at your own risk - as said as a self employed he just bills you weekly/monthly you pay him - he then sorts his own tax out - on this arrangement he can refuse to work if he doesn't want to - likewise you don't have to give him work either

Just employ him it’ll cost about a grand on Tax and Nat ins for the first nearly 13 grand + a bit extra on the accountants fees, you don’t want to start worrying until you get up to somewhere near the Vat limit expenses like equipment a change of van will keep costs down within the first few years.
