ive done 13000 miles on my front tyres(good year).....last january they were an advisory on my MOT(close to legal limit)....im a bit miffed actually as i thought they would last longer.....
anyway MOT due again next month so thought id get them changed this afternoon on this horrible wet day....they only had the budget tyres in stock that were my size...so went with them(rovello 205/60R16)....£110 for both including fitting.....i usually spend that on one tyre! ;D
-
I spend about £80 per tyre at my local place. So not top quality but I always change them way before the minimum tread bar. It really affects your breaking distance in the wet if they are worn right down.
-
No I feel buying budget tyres is false economy they are your only contact with the road it’s never worth risking writing off a van for a set of tyres , we always put on decent ones .
-
i have bridgestone potenza tyres on my golf but i drive that a lot more (and faster)......i only do 3000-4000 miles a year in my van
-

apparently studies show that even premium brand tyres are not great once they are part worn......im not impressed with the good year ones...or maybe connect vans just scrub the front tyres more often?the back ones are fine(and probably will be for another 3 or 4 years yet with my low mileage)....
-
Yours is a lease isn’t it Daz? Just bare in mind they charge you £100+ per tyre if you send it back with tyres that don’t match their spec. If you’re paying for it at the end of the lease then obviously this isn’t an issue.

im gonna buy it at the end of the lease Danny......

Ive always bought part worn tyres for all my vans and cars... i can get them for £20 a tyre at my local place. I also wear them down right to the minimum wear bars, i like to get my moneys worth.
My main issue with buying decent ones at £100 a piece is if you get a puncture in the wrong place its bye bye tyre.
Dont see the point in putting expensive soft compound rubber on a work van, sure a cheap budget tyre wont have as much grip but its a work van not on a race track, i barely get above 40 mph on my rounds.
That said on my motorbike i have the best tyres that you can buy, when theres only 2 wheels grip really is important!
-
I never buy budget tyres. I buy tyres online then pick a fitting centre. You usually get your pants pulled down if you just turn up at a fitting centre and ask if they have the right size of tyre for your van/car, plus they don’t have much brand options within their physical stock.
-
If i need 2+ tyres, i have a look on the internet (tyre shopper), the last two i done on the van was mid range avon's from national tyres, but i have put cheaper on. I only do less than 2k van miles a year as my work is within 4 mile area, and i just drive slow with a the tank in anyway. Different on the car, i go for the quality michelin pilot sport 3's, for motorway higher speed driving.

Nearly all modern vans now are front wheel drive and thats where the diff is too (on the front axle) . They'll always scrub out long before the rears and probably before they wear their tread down. Premium for the rears and budget for the fronts is the way i go.

you cant really go wrong with 2 brand new tyres for £110 fitted though.....also national tyres stock the rovello brand so they cant be that bad.... the tyre place i go is a 2 min walk from my home.... :)
-
Might be worth swapping front to back etc when you get new fronts. So brand new on rear and old rears on front. Reason being is that if you never rotate tyres the rears might start cracking before you have used up the tread.
-
No I don’t do this anymore I went through 2 sets this year buying crap tyres that were 90 a corner,I was going to put a post up about this I now run Michelin X Climates they are the best tyres I’ve ever had on a van fantastic grip and they actually last. 145-150 a tyre just had them fitted a few weeks ago I spoke to the guy about them wearing prematurely and he told me that Transporters and Transit Customs all have a problem with tyre wear these days,he has a lot of guys needing new tyres on these on a 3-5 monthly basis.

my budget ones will last at least 3 years then with the mileage i do....... ;D

how can you say they last ??? when in the next sentence you say you just had them fitted a few weeks a go
-
Tried budgets once on the van, never again. They wear faster, scrub the outsides and don’t handle the weight.
-
I've settled on Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S for my truck and found them very good.
They're around £100 each which is mid-range price for A/T and considerably cheaper than BFG.
A very high silica content makes them extremely quiet, grippy and gets me anywhere I need to go.
I've had the first set for over a year and they seem to be wearing well too.
-
Michelin all round.
-
I had these X climates fitted I meant because the others lasted no time at all I had 4 Toyo tyres and they were absolute toilet during that hot spell earlier this year they lasted 2 months,I left the backs and got 2 Goodyear’s for the front they were pants and the Toyos I left on the back only lasted another 2 months,I’ve had these X climates on for a couple of months and they are brilliant tyres phenomenal grip when fully loaded with water and the ride is noticeably much better, the only thing that I’ve noticed with them is that they are a bit noisy in the wet but apart from that great tyres I’ll only buy them from now.
-
1 of the fitters said to me you don’t want to be spending 150 on a tyre for a work van I said no I’d much rather come back in 8 weeks and ask for another 2 crap ones for 90-100 quid each you fool,I said to him I’ll pay for them you fit em numpty ed.

They are supposed to be very good in snow too.
-
No bull they are fantastic tyres best I’ve ever had on a van I pulled into a muddy lay-by today and thought oh dear with my other tyres I would have definitely been beached,I was full of water thick mud up to the alloys pulled off hardly a spin couldn’t believe it honestly great tyres well worth the extra money.
-
You really notice the difference on wet slippery roads if you’ve got 4 of these on the van it gives you a lot more confidence.
-
If you’re just buzzing around town, your needs are probably different to someone driving up a 1:4 hill with slippy leaves and a ton of water in the boot. Get the right tyres for the job.

at £150 a tyre no wonder you need to earn £500 a day :D
£600 for a set, i doubt ive spent that much on tyres in the last 10 years
-
Budget tyres on my custom. Never had an issue and only needed two new fronts in 4 years. 6000 miles a year carrying 750l of water.
The car though, that’s a different matter, Michelin Pilot sport 4s. Then again it’s a 3.0l straight 6 turbo M140. So I need good Tyres on it.
The van, I’m poodling around town, no need for expensive rubber.
Each to there own like all these things lads.
-

Only nigel could change his tyres more times than I change my resin...... unbelievable!....
How can you wear tyres out in 2 months?are you wheel spinning off at every junction?🤣
-
You’re not gonna notice a difference in grip, not unless you’re on a racetrack🤣. Premium tyres such as Michelin will wear much much better though.
-
Continentals on a transit custom.
650litre tank, full most days, 8000miles a year (ish)
Van ticked over to 4years old earlier this year and put on its second set of new fronts when it had its service/MOT.
The fronts seem to last around 2years, rears are still the originals
Don’t drive like a kn0bhead and the tyres will probably last you longer than you realise.

Always buy decent middle range tyres for van as stopping with confidence and a fully laden van is very important to me.
Had my car fail on a tyre, said they could replace it the same day with a normal cheap tyre for eighty quid, told them I wanted the same as what was fitted on the other three tyres to match which cost two hundred and five instead. Low profile speed rated 19 inch wheels with decent tyres that stop very good in the wet on a motorway doing an emergency brake reinforces how important good grip is as!
I've been in a twenty nine vehicle pile up on a motorway in thick fog and I was the only vehicle that managed to stop between the car in front and the crash barrier and everyone else behind me wasn't. Quickest car I ever owned (twelve hours) and wrote off as the back bumper was up to my front seats, God was on my side that day.

BFG are owned by Michelin that’s why they are expensive , but they do last well
-
Goodyear eagles on my Custom Sport, they are low profile 18” and are very soft rubber so not expecting too much life expectancy out of them, I’ve already had a blow out on one of them, right through the sidewall😧
-
1 of the fitters said to me you don’t want to be spending 150 on a tyre for a work van I said no I’d much rather come back in 8 weeks and ask for another 2 crap ones for 90-100 quid each you fool,I said to him I’ll pay for them you fit em numpty ed.
;D ;D

I agree if I was just driving round town there’s no way I’d bother with better tyres on the van but I’m not and I do about 60-80 miles a day,I’ve never noticed the ride quality improve so much than with the X Climates massive difference.
I’ve had the Goodyear’s they were rubbish lasted just over 3 months these X Climates are SUVs 50psi in the front 45 in the rear it floats along now.
-
2 garages have told me the Transit Customs and the Transporters eat tyres if they are not quality and you put the miles on.
-
My son uses budget tyres on his van and they don't last.
Is it the quality of the rubber or is it that they are mass produced so fast that they don't cure properly? I don't know.
-
Itll be interesting to see if these tyres last 4 years like the good year ones....
-
Like I say I had Goodyear’s all round they were still expensive they lasted the same as the Toyos 18”,these Michelin’s are the only ones that have lasted this long I’m on my 3rd set this year.
-

Are you concerned that you may fail an MOT having SUV tyres on a van ?

I agree Robert. What a way that would have been for NWH to talk to someone. Disgraceful and embarrassing.
Of course it might be an exaggeration on NWH's part which is equally sad if so.
;)
-
Lol if someone said to you what are you doing putting those tyres on your van for he may as well have said you mug, yeah I did say to him what’s it got to do with you who’s paying for em me or you when he walked off and he would have heard me I said to the manager what a numpty head.
You must never talk to someone like that that you are about to give 600 notes to eh,get real.

This may be of some help to you NWH https://www.goodtherapy.org/blog/psychpedia/compulsive-lying

If Nigel is anything in real life like he is on here then I’ve no doubt he just goes round upsetting people and bragging about how incredibly rich he is.
In reality though, hes probably skint and gets bullied by his wife.
-
Bullied by my wife I like that 1 lol we are skint we live in rented accommodation send all our money to some place in London who knows where it goes,I reckon they all meet up with the Mormans and spend it in Las Vegas on one big P**S up 🤣🤣he ho at least I’ll go to heaven eh. 😉

I had spot of luck about 4 weeks ago. I went out at about 7am to start the day only to see that I had a left rear flat, picked up a screw on the way home the night before. Both rears only had a few months life left in them so wasn't too annoyed. I called up all the local tyre places and only 1 had the size I needed in stock. Pirelli's at about £180ish plus fitting etc. More than i'd normally pay as I generally go mid range. Rather then order in and loose another day I thought just stick the Pirelli's on and crack on with work. Doesn't happen all that often and don't let it ruin the week.
Anyway long story short, they only went a replaced the fronts too! Mine were only 6-7months old on the front and now I have a matching set. I pointed it out as soon as I realised which was after I had paid for the rears. I said you're going to want to change them back to mine aren't you and they said it would take too long (had others waiting) and would have to swap valves, rebalance and it was their mistake. You drive off and pretend you didn't notice. Didn't need to tell me twice!!! Free front tyres!
Got to say though I'm almost converted. You can tell the difference in the tyre quality but for the amount of weight we carry it doesn't matter how much they cost, they're still getting chewed up by cornering and wear unevenly as a result.
-
The correct pressure is crucial when you carry the weight we do day in day out when I put cheap tyres on the van the under steer was laughable,we get so much wet weather here you can’t put a price on it.
-

I’ve always used budget tyres for the van, and as said, only 2 new front tyres in 4 years.
Never had a problem with grip, because I don’t drive it fast, and with 750l onboard, the weight of the van keeps it stuck on the floor.
Obviously I fit commercial tyres, but always budget ones. Rears are still like new, and they’ve been on there since 2013.
There is absolutely no way you’re going to notice any difference in performance in a van when poodling around with a tank full of water. None what so ever. I have never ever had the ABS cut in on wet, cold, or icy days. Because we just don’t drive vans fast enough. We window cleaners drive them sensibly knowing we’re full of pure water. Plus, it’s a van! It’s not for racing around.
Sure, premium tyres might last longer, but that’s about the only thing you’re going to gain.
Unless you drive very fast and brake very late in the wet, you are not going to know what rubber is under each corner.
Bet you a blind test would prove that.
The car, that’s a different story, as i drive it quick. So the rubber needs to meet that demand.
-
I found budget tyres would make the van roll and slide on roundabouts and scrub themselves out. I guess some people used to get away with re- moulds ...... do they still use them?
Funny how people are willing to spend thousands of pounds on a heater and electric reel but will scrimp on basic safety ( tank fitting) and tyres.
Funny old world!
-
No remoulds anymore and as for scrubbing out and going straight on round a roundabout that’s what I’m talking about,of course if you don’t do the mileage you don’t need expensive tyres if you’re back tyres are still like new and the traction control light hasn’t come on in decades you are probably the people we all curse.
I’m driving on busy roads and on one particular section of road i travel along it’s like a graveyard so I want to be able to stop with over half a ton in the back,I think people are confusing driving round a town-village not on man’s roads 🤣🤣.

When your driving with 750l you don’t drive fast.
I save fast for the car, not the van
-

HGV's have more tread cut into them with a blade when they get low.
-
I have never bought a premium tyre in my life , I always go in and say middle of the road please , can’t fault any I have ever purchased .
Have just done all 4 in November at a cost of £220 all in .
My previous mid range I had fitted to van when purchased did me 5 years and 30,000 miles
-
On a smaller van I had years ago the rears lasted a bit longer I would go through 2 sets of fronts before I needed to change the rears,it’s been a different game with the larger van even your Kwik Fits etc agree the mid sized vans chew through tyres, the manager told me it’s not uncommon to see someone with a Transit Custom or my van have to come back for fronts after 3 months.
I’m talking about 4-600 miles a week not so the van doesn’t warm up and get rid of the condensation in the exhaust before you start the first job.
-
All I do is 10 mile to my work and 10 mile back with very little movement in between every day , and those 20 mile are motorway so hardly a corner in site ;D

£180 for a van tyre, thats insane :D
I
I would have put some air in it and seen the day out with a slow puncture.
I had a tyre that needed air in every 3 to 4 days, i did that for months until it was completely worn out before i replaced it.

how fast are you going around roundabouts?this had never happened to me in my van...budget or no budget tyres fitted.....as for safety.....whos scrimping on safety?my van tank is secure and ive bought new tyres....just because their budget tyres doesnt mean their not safe!
all tyres have to pass safety tests.....
they dont make remoulds anymore.....in fact their illegal........
i think we ve got some tyre snobs on here for sure! ;D

They do make remoulds these days , in fact one of the biggest makers of these has not long been bought out by Continental !
Just google BANDVULC , I worked there for years and made more than a few tyres for them .
They do all the contracts for all the supermarkets and hauliers, they have also started van tyres too , so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the high end tyres are made by them under license
-
Remoulds 🤣 heard it all Chuck in a couple of orange ratchet straps jobs a good”n”
-
Yeah they must be poope if Conti just bought the company ::)roll
-
Most of the stuff in Poundland is crap 💩 but they still make a shed load of money 🤣,just nipping down the road love I’m gonna get some new tyres what you getting she shouts, well you know those Hola Hoops you’ve just eaten a bit like that 🤣🤣.

Sorry mate...my bad....I thought they were illegal in the UK now.....apparently not....a lot of lorries and buses have them....they have tightened the safety regulations for remoulds though....

Salesmen must rub their hands together when they see you coming NWH , and there I was thinking they broke the mould after they made Daz ;D ;D ;D

Yeah that’s what 1 of the 🔔🔚 fitters thought that’s why I said what’s it got to do with you what tyres I buy you’ll just be fitting em,not my problem just because I bought 4 tyres and it cost more than his car I mean come on lol

no £180 per tyre!!! I have a VW T6 and i put on some aftermarket load rated 20" alloys, essentially I got too carried away. so the tyres that I need are load rated 4X4 tyres which aren't cheap. thats the price I pay for vanity 😂
100% true too. I have 4 shinny new Pirelli's and an invoice for 2!

I have tried a vast range from 60 quid a pop to 150 the ones in the upper middle are no better than the cheaper ones if anything they are worse because more often than not the compound is softer, the last set I had all round was Goodyear’s they were no better then the Toyos I had previously I was advised by a guy I’ve used for years to go for the Michelin’s but always thought they wouldn’t be much difference and they wouldn’t be worth the extra money,I was completely wrong these X Climates are superb.

Buying the same make of tyre is a nice idea - if they're still available.
I'm sure that should say, " Buy the same type of tyre".
