Title: Employing staff

Im a one man band and really thinking strongly about employing but a little fearful about taking the plunge. I know its not walking the plank stuff but im ok financially from the business ive created and slightly apprehensive about rocking the boat. Those who do or have done in past how did you know when time was right to do it ? How did you go about it initially, like did you just take on part time first with you in same van and go from there and  Is it worth it . My business model slightly different to most on here in that gutter cleaning prob makes up 75%  of my work as opposed to being predominantly window cleaning. Just looking for your experiences . Thanks

As a tradesman who ended up out of work after last recession that probably didn't come into my thinking at that particular time but is something ive probably aspired to since then.

Finding 1-2 is doable may take time but it’s possible to find 1-2 good”n”s 6-7-8 let me know when you find the rocking horse S**T I’ll be straight round lol. 👍

With the current climate and a lot out of work you might find a better quality of candidate to choose from.

Someone who's just been made redundant from a long term (low paying) role may be ideal.

Ex Army they love routine and a weeks work to them will feel like nothing.

i employ and have done since day 1.

i'd suggest you should do some planning and goal setting for where you want to be in 10 years time, then work it back to 5 years, 3 years, and 1 year.

there are advantages to employing and advantages to being a one man band.

there are examples of people doing each on this forum very happily

i would imagine that if you drift into employing just because you are growing then that is probably not the best way to do it.

you want to have a think about where you are aiming for and why.

include in your goals what sort of lifestyle you would like, what sort of income you need, where you want to live, what sort of holidays you want. really give it a few weeks to think it through and imagine your future life.

when you have a clear idea where you want to be, you will be able to make decisions like how you want the business to develop and whether than includes employing or something else.

No 1 thing I would always go for with someone is that they need to have bills or responsibilities,waste of time if they just live at home.

Yeah so the opposite who knows before long you could have half a dozen people working for you and be ending up with same on your hip with just 1 employee lol,think before you make the jump and employ properly give whoever you take on as long of a trial period that you can.
A good time to see what they are made of is if you give someone a go at the start of the winter months,you’ll find no end of people that want to do this job in the summer months,winter separates the men and all that although saying that our winters these days are like spring as far as temperatures go.

This is the foreword of a book called the the perfect window cleaning business that doesn’t exist,if you want to make serious money employing at window cleaning with 8-10 staff don’t set the target at 1 million try to get to 2 if you feel this is impossible stick on you’re own or employ 1-2 and still earn a bloody good living 🤣🤣.
