Title: Man safe system
Post by: jay moley on July 24, 2020, 06:05:08 pm
Cleaned a 4 bed semi today. £25 job.

It has a flat roof but there's hardly any space to work. In one place there's about one foot of roof before you'd fall off.

I decided to tell the customer I can't do it anymore and that she can find a new window cleaner or we can crack on with the other windows regularly.

She's just text suggesting we use a man safe system!

How much would that even cost?

Whatever it costs it's not viable for a £25 clean. Imagine the setup time, let alone the yearly testing and training costs.
I would say unfortunately her job was the only 1 that required a 'Man safe system' and the costs were prohibitive, but if she wishes you can get her a quote for the equipment and training :-)

Exactly.

It's madness.

The man safesystem is attached to the roof of the property , you then connect to it using a lanyard and fall arrest  and harness but you still arnt allowed to within 1 meter of the roof edge , doesn’t sound like it’s a viable option , we use them on some commercial buildings we do  but they are £££s  a clean ,

I think you would also need 2 men on the roof , 1 of which would also need to carry a roll up rescue ladder , that’s how used to have to work , as you can only hang in a harness for so long without injury

One step beyond that roof and you'd be in for some serious embarrassment.

If she asks if all that is necessary tell her 'it must be, love'. Me and my girl had one on our house.

Sounds like a house of fun. Have you thought of wearing some baggy trousers? Might help.

Tell her to crack on and let you know when it's been installed...

How much would that even cost?

Are you sure you cant  pole them from the ground?

Sometimes I see window cleaners poling windows half way up a ladder when i could just clean them from  the ground.....its amazing what windows I can clean with a 25ft xtreme....

Can't get the angle, the windows are too set back, it's a pitched roof then onto a flat roof.

Sounds to me, Jay, as if your customer has randomly heard the phrase "man safe system" and thrown it at you. I'd throw it back at her and ask her to explaing how it would work at her property.

It's up to the property owner to install man safe systems, not for you to worry about.

Sometimes you just have to say you cant clean some awkward windows....I can reach 99% of windows on my round with my pole but there are exceptions....

Just let the customer know before you agree a price/start cleaning for them....

Some window cleaners are scared they'll lose the job if they dont attempt every awkward window, usually the customer is fine with it.....

we just say in our quote it includes all windows and doors accessible working from the ground.

to be honest nobody ever really cancels because we cant clean a specific window. they just assume if we cant nobody could i guess

I did one for a few months where i had to get step ladders off to clean 3 velux windows, it took longer to do that than the rest of the windows on the house. Had another with 1 velux that was so high i had to use a 39ft pole off a step ladder. Ive got one at the minute where i clean the entire house then go to the van drag the ladders out to farse about cleaning 2 velux for an extra 2 quid. There was another one where i had to stand on a tramploline, another stand on the road, another i stood in a  field lol. I remember one customer i struggled my arse off with for months to clean this one awkward horrible velux at 39ft extension doing it blind backed up against a fence. In the end she sacked me because the velux wasnt being cleaned properly  :D why didnt i just say no lol

The moral of the story is you shoot yourself in the foot buying extra gear and wasting your time and end up being less profitable out of your need to please the customer.

Gotta learn to say no and either leave those windows or find an easier job!

The trampoline just happened to be in the exact spot I needed to stand so I stood on it. Don't think they were ever in when I cleaned the window, I had to stand in the middle was a bit wobbly but didn't need to bounce luckily.
