Today I got 2 new ones and fitted them I was told that they were fully charged but when turning on my system with heater it turned off after 5 minutes due to what I think seems like a low battery fault, when I plugged into the mains and it was charging they worked fine.
Has anyone had this where they’ve had to give them a good charge even when new due to them just sitting around and maybe having a bit sapped out of em.
Thanks

I always charge new batteries even though they say that they are fully charged

That sucks a but. Sometimes tough they were fit charged it drops down sitting around in shop.
I have a battery level reader installed. Only a few pounds, reads the voltage level. Always worth having as a guide at least.
Hope you all ok now.

I'm sure you ve had this problem before nigel?
Do you not think it could be a charging issue?
My heater has never turned off due to low power ever....
-
The batteries were 2-1/2 years old I’ve charged them overnight and they are working fine now holding 12-7-12-9 after plugging the van in overnight.
-
Everything has been replaced in my van Daz electrics plumbing all by Grippa so it’s not that issue, day to day leisure batteries get hammered by us you think if you use it for a caravan or boat it will only be used at weekends etc we are using it everyday they won’t last long before issues.
2 years out of 2 in line running a heater with no issues is remarkable if you are doing 7-8 hours a day working with the heater.
-
Heater turned off again after 20 minutes or so,there must be a problem somewhere in the system or wiring for this to keep happening,I’ve ruled out batteries now.
Any ideas what it could be on a Grippa 2 man heater off the top of your heads, maybe a fuse on the side of the unit I don’t have my manual on me today.
-
Do you have a split charger fitted and if so, does it all work ok when the van is switched on?
-
The yellow fuse was gone on the heater so I replaced it and re set the unit,it did the same to start off with but I turned the unit off and on again and it works fine now with a constant 12-7-8 when vans not running, very weird.
I did have the heater running on minimum heat which is not good to do I knew that,I’m wondering if it could have been that after turning it back up to full heat it’s working fine,I’ll turn it on again later from cold and see if it keeps running.
-
Yes when I run the van it goes up to 13-8- 14-2 and obviously drops back down when it’s off.

are you getting a fault code?(count the long flashes on the red light)
-
Yeah from what I was seeing it was a battery code,I’ll see how it goes from now went out and started it from cold no engine running although I know the best way is with engine running Daz before you come back with that lol.
It worked lovely only dropped to 12-7 with a full start up cycle,it’s temperamental see how it goes now I’ve changed the fuse.
-
If it’s running ok when the van is on, there is a good chances (although not guaranteed) that your system wiring is sound.
I’d check your earth wiring though if your fuses keep going, check to see where you have it earthed is still clean and not a little rusty.
-
When I changed the batteries yesterday all looked fine on the terminals all clean and fine like it was when fitted originally, the last time I powered it on it seemed to run fine it held 12-8 and only dropped to 12-7 after a fair while of it working.
I’m wondering if it being on full heat since changing the fuse has helped.

Also known as a volt meter.
For example

or one that monitors the current drawn from the battery against the current returned by charging. All parameters seen via app on my Android phone.

Turned it on today with the 2 new batteries and it worked like new no turn off at all or a low read out, gradually reduced when being used back up to 13-8-9 when driving etc.
At the end of a good days work reading out 12-5-6 so will need a charge, happy days the batteries don’t last as long as we think.
