Moth infestation mate.
Lift up, look underneath, all round edges of carpet, I bet you will find empty/or even live cases in chrysalis stage.
-
Looks like she's had something standing there which has caused the latex backing to fail causing the pile fibres to free.
In any event, the carpet is not fitted correctly at edges, looks very old and is only good for uplifting and throwing away.

I think I can see moth cases in the first pic? :)
-
Looks more, to me, like there's been a paint spill which has been cleaned with a solvent, causing the ahhesive to break down.
But what would a woman know?
Angie

looks to irregular for insect problem, i agree with above, possible paint spill. I think i can see paint residue on the fibres on the close up, also a couple of areas on the bottom & the right side of the first photo seem to have paint smears.

looks like moth to me

I went out to a customer last month that had a VERY SIMALAR problem. I told the customer that i thought it may be a moth/insect problem. Seemed very odd though the way it had gone. Im not sure what the outcome was.

it is without doubt, moths.
-
pehaps she Pi***d on it herself
-
In any event, whatever it is, its certainly un-repairable & certainly un-cleanable. A piece could be heat bonded or hand sewn in as its in a corner of the room - but that's another thread!

any way must hav been a undisturbed place like under a bed, prehaps she could put whatever furniture was there, back,
and this time vac under it regular! lazy gits ;D
and tell her the adult moth may return to same site so watch out for the next generation.
its the larvea does the damage. they only need vacing up before they hatch.
-
looks like that's where she makes her husband stand when he's been a naughty boy lol ;D ;D ;)
-
with a gimp mask and a lead. ;D ;D
-
skip problem will it fit in ?sorry nm8 but it has been eaten by moths

Hi steve
It is 100% a moth Infestation.
I did a rug last month (70 years old) which had exactly the same damage.
Sprayed with an anti microbial, brushed through with a soft nylon brush, left overnight and then vacced out, retreated and did the same again.
Tell your customer that they might have migrated to other parts of the carpet/ house and to get the whole lot done. Or replace of course?

Need more info needed Steve is the carpet wool /nylon, were is the carpet fitted and on what floor ground or first? (concrete or boards?)
First impression looks like moths but looking closer I'd say not
-
I've asked my husband about this and in twenty years, he can't ever recollect coming across a moth problem, in carpets, besides, the carpet is clearly an inexpensive synthetic with th pile held by adhesive.
You can also see, quite clearly, the difference in colour, which would again suggest an attempt to clean off paint, perhaps with to much solvent, or too much vigour.

you can see new paint, i think moving furniture for decorating is how its been discovered, which makes sense cus moths only lay eggs undisturbed places,
and it looks like a wool carpet to me, a 10 + year old one, hence the colour.
i have seen moths, lots even still live larvea, it looks just like that.
i never seen chemical of any kind do this.
-
Although moth damage is more common in wool carpets they do sometimes eat the proteins in synthetic carpets.
It could be damage from solvents but you would expect someone to apply the chem in one specific spot and then rub and then stop when they find the carpet comoing away from the backing.
-
I think there's a wool/nylon mix here, but without feeling the pile it's difficult to tell.
Definatly a chemical spillage has caused this problem. There is residue left on top of fibre if you look closely. I've never known moths to infest like this and to such a degree.
-
great pictures crap paint job. i hope we get to the bottom of it as its iinteresting in the second picture there seems to be a lot of what looks like powder !!!? or is it just dirt.
-
on looking at the photo again i must agree with the paint spill theory as i dont think the white powder is powder but paint residue . you need to ask her who painted the room and when if there are no moths
-
i know it rare and i think some are struggling to see that this could be moths, understandably,
but a have seen them do this much and more! amazing i know. you often find its in more than one corner,
is it else were steve??

Update
Customer rang previous owner of the property and it appears potpourri oil was spilt on that corner of the room some time ago then a corner unit placed over it.
-
pot pourri !!
yeah, whats the rice grains in picture then.
come on thought you'll c/c ers!
-
Craig,
i have also seen moth damage worse than this, but as it has been pointed out, there are several facts we are not sure of, ie the pile content ( i have never known moth / carpet beetle to munch away on man made fibre, is the damaged area underneath funiture, as we know the insect will only live in dark humid areas.
Steve, it was mentioned earlier, to be sure lift the carpet in the affected area, if it is insect you should see the lavea (dead or alive). They look like rice.
as i said in my earlier reply i still believe attempting to remove paint or whatever has been spilt has caused the damge.

-
and as i said i can see rice grains in the picture.
why do you think its man made carpet?
-
The previous owner replaced the underlay and used a vast array of products to remove the oil that was spilt including turps, white spirit, vanish and other household products from under the sink.
The carpet is 80/20 wool mix.
Craig rice grains??The backing is hessian then some sort of plastic which is holding the fibres of the carpet.
She is now going to replace the carpet.
-
i thought it was wool i said in earlier post on other page,
rice grains steve, i can see some in pic, top one, thats the lavea. they look like rice.
they must have used acid to clean it then :-X
