Title: People who employ
Post by: Ascjim on March 25, 2020, 09:50:09 am
Have any of you guys stopped yet? I'm thinking working until the end of the week and calling it quits.

I've got everyone in their own vans now and they have zero contact with anyone from start to finish.  Then it's up to them to be responsible out of work.

The thing I'm worried about is will we still get the coronavirus employee retention scheme if I decided to close down and not the Government closing us.

I've got 5 weeks work booked up. If we stop now at least the guys will have work to do when they get back and then I can start getting new work in (we clean gutters, renders).

What are you guys doing?

I'll be fighting for the 80% but with Boris and his shower of charlatans in power I won't be holding my breath.

Enforced holidays for two weeks (probably three now).

So you're using up their holiday for them, so you benefit.

That's nice of you.

We "stood down" yesterday which spilt over to today, however under the current directive each operator will return to work if they feel comfortable to do so.

Most are Self Employed Franchisees, several have decided to wait until Monday, things may change by then.

I am taking the same approach with employment

Your posts don’t hold as much weight when you also brag about how financially set you are for many years to come.

“Walk a mile in a mans shoes” and all that.

I think what soupy is doing is an example of a good employer.

Not sure whether that comment is aimed at me? I'm not financially set.

If soupy employees people on a contract then forcing them to use their holiday up is unethical and just wrong.

If he uses sub contractors then he doesn't employ. Different scenario.

It's actually up to the employers when staff take holidays.

You can't force employees to take their holiday when it suits you.

An employment lawyer would take you to the cleaners.

I don't know his situation.

Look, it's not ideal for anyone. Just off the phone with my sister, she works for a largish catering firm. Unpaid leave. Indefinitely. She asked if she could use holidays and they refused. I could've done that but I like my team and want to do the best by them.

My staff have agreed to take their holidays now, depending on how this pans out I'd certainly consider giving them extra holidays if that's possible. Like everyone else though, I don't know what is going to happen.

Yes you can but you need to give 2 days notice per holiday pay.

I've decided, we will work until Friday then full pay for 2 weeks and see what happens. Hopefully I can claim the 80%, if not it's not the end of the world.

I think that's a good decision. There's twenty of us in total so if we get nothing from the government it's going to be tough but we'll get through it.

I feel like this is a key moment in this pandemic and when it is over I'll look back and be happy with the call which is the same as yours, pretty much.

Soupy - surely you need to put them on furlough- this is the only way to qualify for the (upto) 80% - paid holiday means they won’t get the aforementioned government money

I was asked by a customer last week if I was glad I don’t employ anymore given the current situation. Of course I replied, out of all the guys I employed over the years I probably would have supported maybe 10 of them, the other 40 or so would av been sent packing.

Most would. The handouts would be because of government policies. They are changing the market, not us.

30 cancellations including our biggest contract.

That's bad news.  And are these definitely cancellations rather than a 'put on hold'?

It's got to be tough for people in your position; I know I'm a wind up merchant; but I'm not totally without empathy.

Ish.

That's hard, because you have so many it seems so much worse too. Not nearly as big as you but because there are 4 of us and I see all the cancellations it feels so much worse than when I was on my own but in reality its just 4 times more. Hope some of that wasn't gibberish.
