Well it has been an understandably heated and emotional day or or so since the Government's "Lockdown" announcement.
The dust is still not really settling as different ministers put a different slant on things and we make our decisions as to how we shall conduct our businesses going forward in light of things evolving and in light of community sensibilities.
Let us try our best to draw a line under previous stances, comments and statements and use this thread to help each other and respect each others decisions to sincerely act in accord with government direction.
All the other threads that have been started and driven by this will be locked over the next half hour or so and be removed due to the name calling, character assassination and other unpleasantness.
I am not afraid to admit deep apprehension and concern over the coming events in the near future and I am sure you have these feelings too. Let us relieve this by not adding to them by increasing stress levels as we and our families could do with steady and sensible responses in the weeks ahead.

She notes that window cleaners and gardeners are 'good for the community', not the main driver of the covid-19 epidemic.

So window cleaners and gardeners are not the main drivers of corvid-19? Who ever said they were?
Are you making this up?
And it's a pandemic.
-
So window cleaners and gardeners are not the main drivers of corvid-19? Who ever said they were?
Oh, so we can work safely?
Brilliant.
You're getting there, Griff.
-
You made it up, didn't you?
Did you actually think that window cleaners were that important to be a main driver of corvid-19? (http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/1585097839_grin[1].gif)
Anyway, get to bed, flouty, you've an economy to keep going.

Only for about a day or 2. The near sightedness brigade will see to that. :'(

It's in the post.
People are dying, ten or less at the funeral but those windows need cleaning.
It's embarrassing.

IT IS BETTER SKINT AND ALIVE THAN RICH AND DEAD
Correct and welcome to the forum, Nick!
Saying that, I've never been rich or dead.
-
That's enough for me. Stayed in yesterday until we got a bit more clarification. Hardly see most of our customers anyway and have some today who pay by standing order, they've paid for the service so we're going ahead!
-
Great so now we have to listen to the same people carrying on their arguments from the ‘other topics’ section. >:(
-
Latest advice for us is to carry on, but with safe working practices.
We can run our business in a way that we have zero contact with customers.
You guys do realise that because of these statements by the government we are going to be entitled to nothing from them, no help, no 80% wage etc. That’s currently how it stands.
Meanwhile everyone else is sat at home getting paid most if not all of their wage, so £10 a month to pay the window cleaner is no issue.
Unless you have 6 months wages in the bank then your going to have to carry on, but working safely.
Even if you do have savings in the bank do you want to run yourself completely dry when your actually being advised to carry on working?
Everyone has a personal decision to make, but currently this is the latest advice. If your happy to use up all your savings and stay home then great, if your happy to work but will keep the social distancing protocols then that is also great.
The virus IS going to spread guys. There’s no stopping it. The experts are just saying we need to slow it down. Herd immunity. Google that phrase if your unsure.

From a health and safety perspective - we go out in pairs and visit many pensioner's houses - best stay at home.
From a moral perspective - it's impossible to be out working and not have some interaction that would be otherwise avoided, buying fuel etc, the more people who stay at home the less people will die - best stay at home.
From a business perspective - it's going to be a mess. Boris and his shower of charlatans can't be relied upon for anything. He's a proven liar and a terrible leader, as demonstrated by the chaos yesterday. When this is over I'll pick up the pieces, having seen the social media shaming of window cleaners who went out yesterday I think there will be more pieces to pick up if we're closed - best stay at home.
-
its obvious that certain trades need to take the social distancing more seriously....this is essential according to scientific sources to avoid the spread of this virus....
as a window cleaner who works on his own and can easily apply the social distancing rule i agree with the government.....we need to keep the economy moving...it cant be allowed to totally grind to a halt....
if you can work outside safely...then do it...no ifs,no buts.....
get off this forum(its not doing some of you any good whatsoever)switch off the tv,laptop, tablet, etc and get out there.......
have a great day chaps.....

What was it, 2 pictures yesterday on Facebook soupy? Don’t let that influence a decision. Neanderthals can still poorly type a Facebook post as they sit their getting the weekly dole check.
All my customers have been supportive and are glad I am carrying on for now. I’ve even picked up 3 new jobs this week.
I’m going out alone now, (not taking another worker with me) and also not going to come into contact with anyone. I’ll physically stand 2 metres away if someone comes to the door and they can leave the money on the step.
The business doesn’t have to be a shambles, just work safely.
Everyone else is getting looked after by the government, we’ve just got to fend for ourselves unfortunately.
When all is said and done and businesses go bankrupt, can’t pay mortgages, then the government will say, “but why did you stop work”, “you were told you could safely carry on”.
When your employees aren’t entitled to the 80% wage, the governments response will be the same.
The real shame in this is why self employed people aren’t getting the same help as employed.

i think this pandemic will go on longer than a few months mate.....it could be 2 YEARS i reckon(on and off lockdowns).......cant you send workers out on their own...one van,one man?
-
I dont want to get into an argument but its ok for government to say stay at home but 3 or even maybe 12 weeks of work is gonna cripple alot of window cleaners ,its not just the time of its gonna be the months after it may even take a long time to get back on straight and narrow ,alot of people are gonna get into serious debt over this ,things still need paying mortgage, food, electric, gas, phone bills,tv licenses, sky and before anyone says cut sky of thats gonna play a big part of the isolation and probably alot more bills on top of that money doesn't last long

I've made my decision. The lads are taking enforced holidays for two weeks, we'll see what's what in two weeks time.

Hi Soupy
Can you not make changes and adapt your business so you can continue to work?
We had a monthly large community centre close it's doors last week and postpone it's monthly window clean. Staff are still working doing decorating and deep cleaning to kitchens etc inside. Anyway I suggested that as the car park is empty it would be a good time to have their gutters and gullies cleaned out of debris. They agreed and asked for a quote this has now been accepted and will cover the cost of loosing the next five window cleans at this property..
Opportunities are still showing themselves even in this uncertain time

Not in a way I'd consider safe.
The safety of my employees and customers is my No1 priority.
-
I am sorry but you can not possibly know that your are not passing on the virus by cross contamination it is nieve to think that.beleve me what makes you think customers even want you on there property.window cleaning is not esential you can argue until the cows come.. it's as simple as that every one as a moral duty to do the right thing the sooner it sinks in the better.. I'm fed up with all the bill poop arguments to go out to work. I accept its hard. I have moreason to stay at home my wife works on front line N H S she is putting her life on the line every single day for us she said it feels like a slap in the face when she read people not doing the right thing...... stay safe.
-
Its not the safety of your customers and employees you need to think of, its the NHS.
-
what makes you think customers even want you on there property.
I have a three day job starting today, the guy rang me yesterday asking me if I am ok to still crack on. He wants the work doing.
That's how I know.
I have a solar panel job for next week. The guy emailed me last week, I gave him the quote, told him next week, he said fine.
Next....

If we're a good distance away etc then there is no way we can pass it on or receive it.Some off us HAVE to work. For several reasons we dont have much money behind us.It'll be reduced anyway but something has to be earned for me.When they help us out then I'll stop.

The government has always looked at self employed industries with suspicion with regard to tax evasion - cash in hand jobs.
There was a comment that the government was looking at the plight of the self employed if they were to stop working. It will be interesting to see how they handle this.
After all, if the government did pay 80% of our earnings say based on last year's tax return, what's to stop some individuals taking that 80% and continuing to work?

Just wait what happens when they see window cleaners are still out working.
How many will be topping up their 80% wages with a bit of window cleaning on the side.
If people are prepared to commit benefit fraud by window cleaning on the side when they're on the dole what's to stop others when it's not a crime?
-
Following the clear directive of the Scottish government yesterday I am going out to work today. If this directive changes over the coming days I will adhere to the advice given.
I will be using safe working practices that if all the information on the spreading of this virus is to be believed, leaves zero chance of me either passing or contracting the virus. Of course I expect a little resistance from a few customers and I will try to reason with them where possible, if they are still not happy I will respect their view point and miss them out. I have put a covering note stapled on to my windows cleaned today slip to explain that by social distancing and safe working practice it is safe for me to work. I have also put 2 laminated signs on the windows of my van to reassure members of the public I am encouraged to work in the community using safe working practices.
Have a good day peeps whether you decide to work or not.

I get the Money Saving Expert email. Cut and paste below is a statement from Martin Lewis for what it is worth.
The new coronavirus need-to-knows
1) SELF EMPLOYED/FREELANCE? Try to hold on - the support package should come this week. There's a real feeling of panic growing among the UK's self-employed. While there are some measures in place, they're simply not enough yet, so I've two important points...
a) I have it officially CONFIRMED the Govt is working on a further support package (some reports say it'll be as soon as Wed, but it'll almost certainly be by Fri). I don't know what it is, but suspect it'll be on a par with the 80% of your salary up to £2,500 for employees. So hold tight, and don't make any drastic decisions until that's announced.
For more, and for updates when we get news, see our self-employed coronavirus help including my video briefing.

The Chancellor does not wish to pay Self Employed NOT AFFECTED by the situation, Home Workers etc,
Sites remain open and the message is "Go To Work If You Cannot Work From Home" because this is The Largest Self Employed Sector and he knows we cannot survive without support - quite a dilemma
The Media response drives Public Opinion which affects us all - hopefully the message will get through
Personally think it would be better to lockdown - Key Workers Only - UBI for all
The economic scenario is "tricky" but resolvable in time
Just my thoughts...
Keep Well
John
-

I know someone who is trying to do just that.
Nothing. My daughter could do that; instead she's in bed. X-Box again later.
-

The kids not at school will end up finishing paying for this one.
-
Just to let you know where I am personally on working.
When Boris's announcement came through I listened on Radio 4 sat in my car in London on double yellows as my wife and daughter got her gear out of her flat and we brought it all back to Bristol for the duration.
At that point I thought - that's it we're in lockdown. It was easy to drive into London (no lockdown at that point) less people on the streets even then (we arrived at 7.30pm) and many more then here wearing masks.
On the way home we discussed our options - including my wife whatsapping my other daughters and sons in law.
I personally decided not to work and took the view that I would have no great financial problem to sit it out for three weeks if I had to. But my daughters don't have the same situation. One daughter can no longer operate as a hairdresser, another has had her playgroup leader job put on hold. The other daughter (the one that was in London) has applied for and started a job at Tesco's nearby.
Yesterday evening I decided that personally I would sit it out this week and see how it looks by the end of the weekend.
The road outside is quieter today than yesterday; I have had in the last hour three commercials (crane hire/a car dealer/pump hire company) email me that they are shutting for at least three weeks.
-

Yes this is true as with all previous economic issues War Etc... It implies Purgatory but "most" don't care, I think the Romans understood Society with the comment "Bread & Circuses" - keep Society Fed & Entertained - That's it - Simples!

Morning guys. Someone on here said the reason that the government has allowed or tweaked the wording to say you can travel to work if it cant be done from is because theres no financial help coming anytime soon when they do get a financial package for us if they do then maybe it will change.
All those who through financial worry not greed are trying to work today despite the looks u get or treatment are mostly only doing it as they need to. If I could stay home for 6 months or a year I would. But my 16 month old daughter dictates otherwise . She is my primary concern and my family yes it's a rock and a hard place. Government says go to work if you can apply the public health guidelines England. My cousin works in mental health and said if this goes on for extended period you will have many many casualties to something other than coronavirus. Do what each one wants as long as it's safe legal and operating as the government has asked. Dont rip into others no point. Dont fear for your business give it a go if folks cancel they will after the relaxing of the lockdown anyway as they will prioritize their income ( this has already happened to me) so do what u can whilst you can.
-
Two good posts, Malc.
We've had the Phoney War; confusion about whether to work or not.
Now we are entering our Darkest Hour; people have had enough (even after a day or two) and looking at returning to work. Yesterday's news didn't help with that (especially Sturgeon).
But let this be our Finest Hour. Let us hang on until the government make an offer.
Don't make peace with Hitler (and flout) when we are so close to the Americans (government) coming to assist us.
I shall never surrender, anyway.
-
I will wait to see the outcome off this help package , I think it might come tonight, if not that then at least a clearer explanation of who can safely go to work .
Boris needs to do one or the other soon , even do as Ms Sturgeon did and say we are good to go , if the public see that then we might not get vilified as much !
-

Same, gonna wait for the details on what help we get!
Depends if we are forced to stop working or not. If we are still allowed to work, we won’t be entitled to anything at all!
-
Boris gave the country a clear message on Monday night. ‘You must stay at home.’ Was he telling me it was still ok to go to work on Tuesday? I don’t think so. Now it all seems to be getting watered down with a lot of confusion. People in my road work in factories and they’ve been going off to work everyday. Why? I fear we won’t be getting any help and told we can carry on working safely. Then of course we will have to face possible backlash from the public. I’ve read on the other forum about window cleaners vans being vandalised.
-
Boris is a shambles.
-
I don't think the backlash from the public will be as bad if we get stitched up by the government. They might understand our situation more or even be in the same boat. Maybe help them out. A free clean? Do a bit of shopping for them?
Work with the public. A united public is more powerful than the government. We could force them to help us out.
I don't think the government can afford to alienate most of us; even if costs them the earth.
-
Boris is not a shambles, very easy for many to say....the general public is a shambles!
Many have ignored him for weeks and now the curve rises more are listening, shame on many.
It's clear that the self employed will be helped it's also clear and makes sense that this will take longer to sort out as it's not black and white with self employed.
Stay calm, be patient, think yourself lucky....your current main concern is whether or not to carry on working....many others are planning funerals and awaiting to hear the progress of loved ones in hospital in critical care.
-
Think it was on my local 10pm news last night , one of them “ Your questions answered slots “
Official was asked by viewer if he could still have tradesmen in the property, he was told if he wanted a painter and decorator in then as long as 2m rule was observed then it would be fine :o
But hold on , we can’t work !
-
Boris is not a shambles, very easy for many to say....the general public is a shambles!
You only have to look at the forum posts from yesterday to see the panic he's caused this week. Clear leadership from someone who we feel we can trust is what the general public need.
Boris is a shambles.
-
I fail to see the complication in giving us the same as the employed, if anything it’s easier surely?
HMRC looks at what we did last year , divides that by 12 and takes off 20% , then pays me the remaining 80% ;D ;D
I just did mine in 1 minute and I’m a thick window cleaner .
They just don’t want to do it that’s all .
I will just work out what I feel they should have paid me , if they don’t , and disappear it from my next return , if I come out the other side that is

The problem is you're looking at that from your situation, what about the director of company x for an example that earnt an average £1m a month, allow the government to give him £800k a month!?

The problem is you're looking at that from your situation, what about the director of company x for an example that earnt an average £1m a month, allow the government to give him £800k a month!?
Nope, cap it at £2500 like everyone else in the employed sector.
If they were earning that much then surely they won’t be on the bread line.
-
Boris is not a shambles, very easy for many to say....the general public is a shambles!
I was tempted to reply "Agreed" and in many ways I do but...
It is evident that people need SIMPLE CLEAR CONCISE DIRECTION -a LOCKDOWN - KEY WORKERS ONLY - UBI FOR ALL FURLOUGHED WORKERS does exactly that - the economics will play out over time
-
I fail to see the complication in giving us the same as the employed, if anything it’s easier surely?
HMRC looks at what we did last year , divides that by 12 and takes off 20% , then pays me the remaining 80% ;D ;D
I just did mine in 1 minute and I’m a thick window cleaner .
They just don’t want to do it that’s all .

The Chancellor stated the issue was: Paying people that ARE NOT AFFECTED eBay sellers etc would not be acceptable - I think the Construction Industry and Public Opinion may force his hand

Well earning that he shouldn’t need any help should he , put him on the back burner for further investigation with a standard payment to survive until it is worked out .
It’s the sole trader and small biz that needs immediate attention
-
With the pressure mounting on him, He may just have to pay out to all in the short term if they want a full lockdown or for at least the next month while they can come up with a fairer plan for all. Nobody should be gaining out if this at all.
But it's certainly more complicated to do then the PAYE system.

All I want is what the employed get !
Do this for me and in return I will take the 20 minutes required to strip out my DIY van mount and then my van and me are at the disposal of the NHS or whoever needs help in the fight , I will even pay fuel myself !
It’s all about swings and roundabouts for me

Blimey! After hearing that I think Boris will go for full lock down. To be honest I think the government were just stalling until it gets proper out of control. India is in full lock down and hardly anyone has died there.

But you’ll sit there pontificating, like that LBC presenter James O’Brien til the cows come home offering nothing but toxicity, ill-will and a general sense of doom and gloom to the whole thing.
Well done.

I think they were just stalling untill they get all these bills past today, today's speech could be the big one, in regards to lockdowns and self employed help as looks like parliament is shutting it's doors tonight.

Kids are off school, nice weather, no one allowed to go anywhere much, so everyone’s in the garden. How’s it going to look when the window cleaner turns up? Lots of people have small gardens so can’t see the 2 metre rule being observed especially with kids running around. I think many customers would rather not bother with window cleaning rather than risk anything or have the hassle of getting everyone inside while he’s there.
Don’t think that Nicola Sturgeon has thought it through properly.

Greatest morale boost I've had in a long time - going out to work this morning.
Even picked up a new job, could have had pressure washing too if I did it.
Customers aren't bothered, two were in the back yard and went inside until we'd finished.
Additional bonus one who always paid cash is now going to pay online.
Just didn't get the coffees and teas.

He's paid his workers for the next two weeks.

And so he should. They’ve earn’t him enough.
Soupy’s weird, he alternates between James O’Brien and George Galloway. Now you want to imply he’s got a touch of Snow White about him 😅😅

Well he's offered something then, hasn't he?
We're still waiting on Boris. To be fair, it's an unprecedented problem that he's facing. That's why I'm not offering 'toxicity' about him. And some are a little sensitive about it, too.
When it suits.
-
India is in full lock down and hardly anyone has died there.
Half of India's population have no access to a flushing toilet. Nearly a billion of them still defecate out doors.
I wouldn't trust any figures with regards Covid-19 from India because I don't believe they have the infrastructure to account for them.
And remember, no nation can lock down it's population for 12 to 18 months. That's just not a solution.

I’ve HAD to go back to work! I can’t cycle every day, it’s killing me.

Just listening to Borris Johnson at PM's question time and Corbyn is quizzing him over pay for the self employed.
BoJo says he's putting a package together but noted that he is NOT closing down the UK economy.
I take it from that, that he's - somehow - going to compensate those who can't work, not those who can. For example the tourist industry cannot work. Small shop owners that rely on tourists cannot work. Those kinds of occupations.
I'm not sure how window cleaners fit into that because some of us can work and some of us can't (window cleaners who rely on commercial properties - for example - like shopping malls, will be hit harder than those who do residential).
It kind of makes sense because self employed on-line retailers are making a killing right now. Should they be compensated too?
-
If your being compensated I think you would have to show a “cease of trading” while your being compensated.
That’s one way round it.
-
But I highly doubt we will get anything out of this.
We are going to be classed as “can work safely”.
-

That’s fine with me as long as custies want us there !
What then

Friend of mine contacted me earlier. He works as a window cleaner in Rhyl, North wales
Was pulled over by police whilst going to his first job this morning and was told he shouldn't be out working and to go home.
-
Surely it depends on the customers allowing us to continue
If they say we cant work then we cant work so should qualify as being out of work
Anyway i cleaned a few today, didnt feel great, very awkward with everyone in.
Going to sack it off for the rest of week and see what has happend by monday
i got this email from my accountant this morning, too early to tell what help we will get yet

That sounds like the transcript taken from some so called doctors YouTube video !
He got called out on the truth of some of his facts , he then apologised and redid his video

Do you think the government will give us money for having 'awkward feelings'?
Maybe they could call it The Awkward Feeling Allowance?
-
Taken from the BBC website:-
Chancellor Rishi Sunak has promised help for the self-employed and will announce a package of support on Thursday at the government's daily press conference, a government source told the BBC.
Honestly at this point, I don’t think there will be anything for us. I can see them producing a list of what occupations are safe and we will be on that list.
-
I’m not saying it’s b******s per se, but in these times of opinions hiding as facts, I’m interested as to the source...?
Ta
There's some good stuff in there about washing your hands but it's mixed up with fake news bull poo. Full facts done an article on it:

We should go on strike if that’s the case. Oh :-\

Boris is not a shambles, very easy for many to say....the general public is a shambles!
His government has made an utter shambles of messaging the rules about who should and should not work. It's no wonder the public doesn't know which way to turn. Blaming them is lazy.
In time of crisis people panic. They need strong, clear, repeated messages from their government. It's interesting that his government spaffed £60m on the crystal clear and simple message Get ready for Brexit yet they can't seem to muster anything like the same effort and clarity for something far more important and urgent. Shambolic.
Here's a summary of the five different messages the govt gave out in the space of 24 hours: https://www.revk.uk/2020/03/business-as-usual-or-is-it.html
-

Joe average is pretty thick though. There was still confusion about who could work and who couldn't even when the rules were published and the Health Secretary said clearly what they were.
People want to believe what they believe and will refuse to believe otherwise in the face of all the facts.
And any operation involving the whole of the UK will run into problems and mis-communication. To believe otherwise is naive and shows a lack of knowledge about the basics of project management. A battle plan never survives the first contact.
I'd give it time for the virus to peak and lets see what the outcome is before we judge what's shambolic or not.
This is what I'll judge him on:
UK coronavirus death toll of 20,000 'a good outcome', says chief scientific adviser
And that may sound like a big number but we're a population of 67 million and we get several thousand deaths a year from seasonal flu. I think it was 2015/16 we had 15,000 deaths because of some problem with the flu vaccine and the wrong kind of virus.
So 20,000 deaths is good (as long as I'm not one of them; obvs).

Nope but I can't work like that. Like working on Sunday during a thunderstorm at 6am in the morning.
The feeling was strong

It's B0//@x for a start how do you kill something that's not alive?
Drink hot drinks the virus will already be inside cells in your throat not hanging about waiting to washed away with a hot drink.

That's almost Dogen's version of Zen Buddhism.
"How can I die if I was never born!"
Are you an enlightened ones?

Well what can I say, Nicola Sturgeon you have went up in my estimation. During your clear and concise speech to the masses yesterday you encouraged me, as a self employed window cleaner to continue to work within the community, which I duly did. It’s quite obvious that your message was heard loud and clear as all of my customers were expecting me and indeed they were glad to see me, in fact I reckon I’ve saved a few divorces today as it must have been good for said customers to speak to someone ( at a 2 metre distance I may add ) rather than their other half. I’m delighted to say that as a result of my efforts today a percentage of the money I earned will be winging it’s way into the the treasuries coffers.
Like many I used to see you as a Jimmy Krankie lookalike, I now think you have more a resemblance to Jemima Khan! I could muff dive you quite happily right now................Ok I’ve took that too far😂😂
-
Going to work is built into the modelling chaps.
I’m not working for the rest of the week to let things settle but I’ve got to say, that was pretty conclusive.
You should (or at least are allowed) to work if you cant work from home.

Letting all the thousands of Athletico Madrid fans fly into Liverpool for a Football match was built in to the modelling (even though Football matches where banned in Spain), letting all the St.Patricks night celebrations go ahead was built into the modelling, Cheltenham racing went ahead. You'll pose no problem, i'm sure ;D
